1 Garrett Physical Education Course Expectations PHILOSOPHY We believe that Physical Education is an important aspect in the development of the total individual. A person who is physically fit endures less illness and copes with stress better than one who is not physically fit. The scope of Physical Education at Garrett will be to improve physical fitness through a variety of activities. It is hoped that each student will feel success and develop a healthy attitude toward physical activity which will serve him/her throughout life. EVALUATION Students may earn 5 points per day in P.E. In order to earn these points each student must: 1. Attend class. 2. Dress out. This means being properly attired in athletic shoes that will stay on your feet when you are active, socks, Garrett P.E. uniform or sweats brought from home. 3. Participate appropriately to the best of his or her ability. Not participating is not acceptable. Participating appropriately includes being on task, being attentive, exhibiting good sportsmanship, and cooperating with the instructor and other classmates. BONUS POINTS Bonus points may be awarded for outstanding performance, good sportsmanship, and at the discretion of the instructor. WRITTEN EXAM At the end of the semester of P.E., a written exam will be given which will have a bearing on the semester grade. PRACTICAL TEST At the end of the semester of P.E., students will be tested on the mile run and on push-ups to evaluate improvement of fitness. AGENDA BOOKS Do not bring your agenda book to P.E. You may simply write what we did in P.E. when you go to your next class.
2 CITIZENSHIP Students are expected to be on task, follow directions, participate appropriately to the best of their ability and be respectful of themselves and others. Chewing gum will affect your citizenship as well as your grade. If you are caught chewing gum 3 times in one quarter, your citizenship grade will be a U. LOANER CLOTHES All students are expected to dress out for P.E. Students who do not have their uniform will be issued a loaner uniform to be used for that day only. Three (3) points will be deducted from the daily points each time a student borrows loaners. FITNESS (10 POINT DAY) Once a week, each class will participate in a conditioning activity to promote cardiovascular fitness. The activity will vary from week to week, but all activities will increase cardiovascular fitness and therefore, work the heart muscle. The student earns points for the activity by doing the activity well and by striving to improve from week to week. If a student does not do aerobic activity well, then these weekly activities will help to increase his/her level of fitness. Heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S., and we continue to have huge numbers of obese children in our schools. Improving cardiovascular fitness levels is the first step towards promoting a healthy lifestyle. One of the activities that we do is the mile run. If your mile run time, for example, is very slow you will earn at least 2 points for completing the activity. If you are unhappy with that grade, then you may write a 100 word report on cardiovascular fitness, heart disease, etc. and turn it in to me. I will then add 5 points to the points received for that fitness day and this will raise your grade. Remember, not all fitness days are mile runs. Other fitness activities include, 10 minute run, jump rope fitness, relay run, 2 mile relay, and partner run. Below is the standard for the 85th percentile for U.S. boys and girls. If you compare these standards to Garrett standards, you will notice that we are truly expecting far less than these scores and still awarding exemplary grades in our classes. We do encourage students to strive for excellence by achieving these national standards. If parents or guardians feel that their child should not dress out and participate in any activity, they must write an explanatory note. Please include your phone number for verification purposes. I will use the student to help with class if possible or he/she be given an assignment to complete in the library by the end of the class period. Parent notes will be accepted for a maximum of 3 days. A doctor s note is required for more than 3 days. MAKE-UP WORK FOR P.E. When a student is absent, he/she needs to read an article about sports, nutrition, or any health related subject. He/she then writes a 50 word summary of the article and turns it in to his/her instructor. If possible, attach the article to the summary. If he/she misses a fitness day he/she needs to write a 100 word report. For example, if a student misses one week of school, he/she would need to write a 300 word report. This would include one 100 word report for the fitness day and a 200 word report (50 words for each day) for the four activity days. Please put your name, the class period and the dates of the absence(s) on the work that you hand in. Also include the number of words written. You may check infinite campus to find out if you missed a fitness day. You may use a newspaper, magazines, the Internet or other books for your report. TARDIES Students need to make sure that they are on time to class or they will need to go get a tardy pass. SHOWERS We promote personal hygiene at Garrett and we feel that students should shower after physical activity. Therefore, showers will be encouraged, but not required.
4 EMERGENCY PROCEDURES For a fire drill, students are to leave the locker room or gym immediately and walk in an orderly fashion out to the designated area where they will line up alphabetically for roll. For a shelter in place drill, students are to go directly to the girl s locker room. P.E. RULES 1. Locker rooms shall be entered and exited through the gym. Students will walk outside the basketball court lines. 2. Restrooms may be used only after dressing for P.E. In other words, the student must be dressed in P.E. clothes before going to the restroom. 3. Once dressed for class, students are to remain in the locker room until dismissed by the instructor. No student is to be in the gym unless an instructor is present. Upon entering the gym, students are to immediately begin the warm-up walk. 4. Students should respect the rights and property of others. Do not touch another person s stuff. 5. The student should always lock his/her belongings in his/her long locker before leaving the locker room for P.E. class. The student should keep his/her combination private. 6. Horseplay and acting silly is not allowed. No running or standing on the benches in the locker room is allowed. 7. Water may be brought from home or purchased from the machine in the locker room when your class is scheduled to go outside for the day. 8. Towels, trash, loaners, etc. should be placed in their proper areas. 9. P.E. uniforms are to be worn in a proper manner. The student is not allowed to wear the P.E. uniform over his/her school clothes. 10. At the end of class, students are to remain in the locker room seated by their long locker. Remain seated until the dismissal bell rings. Students are not allowed to stand by the door. 11. Students are not to leave the class instruction area without permission. 12. Students should immediately report any injury to his/her instructor.
5 13. For safety reasons, all jewelry should be removed and placed in your locked locker before you report to class. It is a good idea to keep a ziploc bag in your locker in which to keep your jewelry during class. 14. Students are not to go under the bleachers. 15. Students are not to bring anything to the locker room. Please put all of your belongings (books, etc.) in your hall locker. Your P.E. clothes will be in your P.E. locker already. You will take your clothes home on Friday and bring them back on Monday. Absolutely no cell phones allowed in the locker room. DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES 1. Warning 2. Detention and parent contact 3. Referral to office
