CVE students and staff have had a great beginning of school. If we can carry the positive energy of the past few weeks through the year, then is going to be an excellent school year. With your help I know we will be able to keep the momentum going. The faculty has spent time looking at our academic achievement data, as well as the many nonacademic successes we have had as a school. Not only do our students excel academically on standardized tests, they also participate in many opportunities beyond the classroom. Our students are active in programs such as Chess Club, Reflections, Cromwell Council, Math 24, and Stock Market Club to name just a few. We are extremely proud of our students and our school. Our dedicated teachers are focused on the mission of success for all children. They are dedicated to the goal of continuous improvement in the academic achievement and growth of every Cromwell Valley Elementary student. We appreciate that you send them to us every day ready to learn. We take seriously our responsibility to care for your children and to offer them an exemplary instructional program. We look forward to continuing our partnership with you to encourage every student to pursue excellence. We want to thank everyone who has attended the recent CVE activities. We had a great turnout for sneak-a-peak; back to school night, and Pastries for Parents. Thank you to the members of the PTA who organized the Pastries for Parents. You will find the information you need by opening the Community Tab and scrolling down to Volunteer with BCPS. Once you have completed the online training, please copy the application and the training certificate and bring it to the front office. If you do not have access to a computer, please call CVE s front office to schedule a time for you to complete the training at school. Please remember when volunteering, younger siblings are not to accompany the volunteer. Volunteer training and the copying of the volunteer application and training certificate needs to be done on a yearly basis. When coming in to volunteer for the first time, please bring your application and certificate to the front office. Continued on page 2..

2 From The Principal ~ Continued from page 1 ~ Throughout the school year, if your address, telephone number, cell phone number or work number or emergency information changes, please notify the school office immediately. Any changes should be made in writing, addressed to the school office and signed by you. In the event of an address change, updated proof of residency information will be required to be presented to the school office. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Welcome back to everyone and best wishes for a wonderful new school year! Reminders: Office hours are from 8:15 to 4:30 p.m. Arrival: Students may not enter the building prior to 9:05 a.m. unless they are a studio helper, safety, and/or attend a before school club. Studio helpers may enter the building at 8:50 a.m. and safeties may enter at 8:55 a.m. Late arrival: If your child arrives to school after 9:20 a.m., he/she is late. Please escort your child to the office. Make sure you sign them in the late arrival book, and complete a late pass. Absence: A student returning to school after an absence must bring in a written excuse, stating the reason for the absence. Dismissal: CVE s dismissal time is 3:50 p.m. unless your child is attending an after-school activity. If your child is not picked up by 4:05 p.m., you will need to come into the office to pick them up and sign them out in the late pick up book. Please make arrangements for your child to be picked up on time. Thank you. CAR LINE Parents, please have your child s name on a card and attach it to the mirror so we can create our car rider list. Having a displayed card will help the car line move faster. If a grandparent, neighbor, etc. is going to pick up your child, they should also display the child s name on a card. If you need a card, please contact the front office. DISMISSAL CHANGES All changes in dismissal must be sent to school in the form of a dated note the day of the change. Please remind your child to give the note to their teacher who will then send it to the office. We can no longer honor or accept changes in dismissal through . Although is a wonderful way to communicate, if a teacher is absent or in the middle of instruction, the may go unread until after dismissal. We want to make sure that all changes in dismissal are clearly communicated to the classroom teachers prior to dismissal. If there is an emergency, you may call the front office. Thank you for your assistance and cooperation in this matter. For the safety of our students, the side parking lot is not to be used after 3:15 p.m. If you are picking up your child, please park on Crestwick Road. Please respect our barrier. Thank you. Visitors: BCPS has installed a Raptor system in all schools for visitor sign in. Upon entering CVE, please report to the office to sign in. In order to better protect our students, visitors and staff, all visitors will be required to show a valid, government-issued ID. Thank you for your cooperation. Birthday Celebrations: For the safety of our students who have food allergies or other health issues, please do not send in any food (cupcakes, donuts, cookies, etc.) to celebrate your child s birthday. Non - food items such as pencils, stickers, erasers, or glue sticks are acceptable as a treat. Page 2

3 From The School Nurse ~ The hearing and vision technician from the Baltimore County Health Department will be at CVE from September 9-11th and 15-17th All students in grades K, 1, and 4 will be screened. If your child is in grades 2,3, or 5 and you have concerns about either hearing or vision, please contact Trish Ryan-Thiel, school nurse, at so that your child can also be screened when the technician is at CVE. Fluoride Do you get your home water supply from an underground well? If you do and your child does not already get daily fluoride tablets at home, he/she can participate in the Baltimore County Public Schools/ Baltimore County Department of Health fluoride program. This program provides school-based fluoride mouth rinses in order to prevent tooth decay. Fluoride is administered once per week by the school nurse. The program is entirely voluntary and without cost to you. Your permission is required in order for your child to participate. If you have a well at your home, and you are interested in having your child receive fluoride at school, please contact Trish Ryan-Thiel, school nurse, at or at pryanthiel@bcps.org. Questions may also be directed to the Office of Public Dentistry, Baltimore County Department of Health at PICTURE DAY ~ Mark your calendars - School pictures will be taken on Monday, September 28th. 4 Smart Talk Do you have a child who is facing some challenges at school? Check out Smart Talk, a PTA program for CVE parents. You will gain information and practical strategies on helping your child become more successful in school. Targeted topics will address academic, emotional, or social concerns. Brain Series Part I: Mindset Change your Words Change your MINDset Learn about how recent brain research is reshaping how we learn and teach. How this impacts parenting. How you can help strengthen your child s neuron connections through every day conversation... 5 FUN AND FITNESS PROGRAM (BEFORE SCHOOL INTRAMURALS) 3 RD -5 TH GRADE Who: First 20 third-fifth grade students whose parents register their student-athlete at the link below will be able to participate. If you get closed out, please know there will be additional intramural programs offered later in the year. Please don t sign up if your child is already enrolled in a previous morning intramural this year or is participating in another morning club/activity on these days (safeties and morning helpers are welcome to sign up and leave early to get to their duties). What: Mrs. Sherman will be offering a Morning Fun and Fitness Program that will include fitness activities and lead up games, competitions. For example: agility ladder, exercise cards, fitness frenzy station, 2 on 2 basketball competitions, sideline soccer, jump roping, speed stacking, handball Where: CVES Gym When: Tuesdays and Thursdays from October 6 - November 24 th from 8:00am-9:05am (Must arrive by 8:10) How much: Free!
