1 LEWIS AND CLARK ELEMENTARY th St NW Mandan, ND Phone Susie Atkinson, Principal Newsletter for March 2016 Principal s Notes The Month of March brings us to that point in the year where we begin making plans for the upcoming school term. We will be conducting registration for students who are currently in grades K 4 during the week of March 29-April 1. Registration forms will be sent home Tuesday, March 29. Please complete the front and the back and return that week. Along with the registration sheet will be a letter explaining the procedure that will be followed regarding teacher requests. All current 5th grade students who will be attending school at Mandan Middle School next year have begun the registration process. Counselors from Mandan Middle School met with them during the month of February. Warmer Weather The month of March brings us progressively closer to warmer weather. The spring thaw will present us with a few issues that can cause concern for us on the playground. We will continue to ask students to bring & wear boots for access to non-snow covered or wet areas on the playground until such time that things are dry enough so that tracking mud/dirt into the building isn t an issue. Health Updates We strongly encourage good attendance for all students. However, at the same time if your child is ill with a fever, diarrhea, etc..., please keep them home for 24 hours or until they are fever free so we do not spread sickness to others. A Lice Information sheet is also attached to the back page of the newsletter as a reminder to keep checking your children s heads and how to deal with lice if they are found.

2 Student Council News Hope your February was filled with love! The students and staff showed love by donating to the Needs Committee during Hat and Beverage day. The total amount raised was $440.00! Part of the proceeds went to Oothoudt family. Nathan attends Lewis and Clark. His younger brother was diagnosed with cancer and the money will help cover medical costs. Thank you for supporting our Lewis and Clark family! Bring back the 80 s for the Fun Day was a blast from the past! I m sure some parents were reminiscing about their childhood days. I loved seeing all the bright neon colors and the aqua-net ratted hairstyles! The month of March is Read Across America so the student council teamed up with the librarians and have put some great activities in place for the whole month! Be on the lookout for a letter with the dates and activities! Spirit Day will be March 14 th since we do not have school on the 7 th due to a Tech Development day for staff. Hello! LEWIS & CLARK PTO Our next PTO meeting will be in April since we will be having our Family Fun Night this month. L&C Spring fundraiser kickoff was February 24th. Please watch for the Extreme Coupon Saver Books in your child's folder/backpack. Each book is sold for $20. Each book sold gives L&C $10.00! If/ when you sell your 5 booklets please bring the money to the main office and if you want more packets, we have them here. Your continued support is what makes our fundraising a success! 3 CLASSROOM PICTURES Phyne Photography will be here taking classroom pictures on Tuesday, March 10 th. Picture envelopes have been sent home with the students. You need to return the envelope with payment the day that pictures are taken or you will not be able to order a photo. The date is NOT on the envelope so remember TUESDAY, MARCH 10 th! 5 th grade MUSIC PROGRAM 5 th grade will perform their music program at 7:00pm on MAY 17 th at the Mandan High School Auditorium. We will have more details later!! 1 st & 2 nd grade music program! First & Second Grade will present their program Thursday, March 3 rd at 7:00pm At the Mandan High School Auditorium. If you are unable to make their performance in the evening, please join us for rehearsal at 2:00 at the high school. The program is directed by Ms. Renae Mosbrucker 3 rd & 4 th grade music program Will be APRIL 5, :00pm at the Mandan High School Auditorium More details coming later NEW LUNCH TIMES!! Last week we adjusted noon time lunches. They are as follows: KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION REMINDER If you have or know of an incoming Kindergarten student that has not registered for the school year, PLEASE get them registered right away. You need to bring in a copy of their birth certificate and immunization records. 4 Lewis and Clark Elementary School has declared the month of March as reading month at our school. Our theme for reading month is Reading Gives You Super Powers! During this month, our school will be holding special events to celebrate our reading super powers! Here is calendar and list of events to keep you informed about the various activities and celebrations your child will be participating in. Thank you for helping us instill a love of reading in your child. Reading really is one of the most important Super Powers we can share with our students! Tuesday, March 1 Book Bingo will begin at school. Description of Events Dress Like a Superhero Day! Students may come to school dressed up as a superhero. Thursday, March 3 D.E.A.R. in your Superhero Mask- Students will have made a superhero mask in their classroom and they will Drop everything and read in their classrooms for 15 minutes. The teachers will decide what time works best for their class. Wednesday, March 9 Sweet n Your Day with a Story-Classrooms will be provided with suckers and the teacher may decide a time that the students may read and have their sucker. Thursday, March 10 D.E.A.R.- Drop everything and read for 15 minutes in the classroom. The teacher may decide what time works best for them.

5 Monday, March 14 SPIRIT DAY! Wear your red and black or Lewis and Clark gear. Thursday, March 17 Green Lantern Day-Come dressed in Green to celebrate St. Patrick s Day! Green Lantern D.E.A.R.- Drop everything and read with your lantern (flashlight) for 15 minutes in their classrooms. The teachers will decide what time works best. Parent Night from 6:00-7:30 PM- Parents and students are invited for a fun evening at school. There is going to be a book swap, Bingo for Books, photo booth, and other activities for them to take in. Wednesday, March 23 Be a Jeanius- wear jeans and superhero shirt (optional) Thursday, March 24 D.E.A.R.- Drop everything and read for 15 minutes in the classroom. Fly into Rooms and Read- surprise guest readers will fly into a classroom to read to the students.
