The campus, which will be the largest single education project to be undertaken in the county, will accommodate a thousand, 11-16 year-old pupils and should be open to students from September 2018. PORT TALBOT A twenty-first century setting for a modern day education establishment. Estimated to cost around 28m, the Campus will boast all the latest technological facilities and a dedicated Sixth Form Centre; the new site will give the area s shopping centre a much welcome boost by bringing in more than 1,000 students daily. This development has been planned in line with the Harbourside Development Strategy of the local authority. Mark Dacey CEO of the NPTC Group of Colleges said: We are very excited to be a partner in such an excellent proposal, rivalling anything else nationally. This is a great opportunity for future learners in the area and an opportunity that they could not get anywhere else in Wales or the UK. 6

A Levels, Vocational Courses or Apprenticeships? All can lead to Higher Education and Employment but which is right for you? A Levels A Levels are academic, or study-based courses. Assessment is mainly by examination, with some coursework. A Levels have been the traditional route into Higher Education. The A Level qualifications are split into two separate parts - AS and A2. The AS Level forms part of the full A Level; it is a nationally recognised qualification on its own and is normally taught over one year. The A2 then forms the remainder of the A Level and is taught in the second year. Vocational Courses Vocational courses such as BTECs, NVQs and Diplomas are more practical courses and closely related to the world of work. There will still be some study-based learning but the amount varies according to the course taken. Assessment can be by practical assessment, portfolio assessment (coursework), and examination. Vocational courses at Level 3 are equivalent to 3 A levels and also lead to university. Apprenticeships If studying full-time is not for you, then work-based learning could be exactly what you are looking for. There are programmes to suit everyone! Work-based learning gives you the chance to gain experience in a real job, plus job-specific qualifications whilst earning money. Foundation Studies The Foundation Studies courses are intended to help school leavers and young people with learning needs develop their personal independence and prepare them for work. Students do not need any formal qualifications, just a desire to participate in all learning activities. Essential Skills / Wider Key Skills Essential Skills and Wider Key Skills have changed. This was in response to the Review of Qualifications. They be have been revised to become one suite of Essential Skills including: Application of Number Digital Literacy Critical Thinking & Problem Solving Personal Effectiveness Creativity & Innovation Planning & Organisation Stand-alone qualifications in these skills will still be available post-16 and in Work-based Learning and Adult Community, as appropriate. 7

Learning Programmes LPs (Learning Programmes) have been introduced for all students in post-16 education across Wales. The LP is a very different approach that enables us to put the student at the heart of the curriculum design. Each student will study a specific LP including their main qualification/subjects and each LP is made up of three parts. WBQ or Learning Core Tutorial Main Qualification (Max 4) Community, Learner, Industry Focus (CLIF) Approx. 20% Approx. 70% Approx. 10% The Learning Core for the College will consist of either the bespoke Student Tutorial Enrichment Programme (STEP) or for the majority of programmes the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification (WBQ), plus a number of Essential and/or Wider Key Skills and work related experience. Welsh Baccalaureate The Welsh Baccalaureate qualifications (WBQ) are delivered at Foundation post-16, National post- 16 and Advanced level. These qualifications are now graded and are essential part of the Learning Programmes of all full-time students. Students successfully completing the WBQ Skills Challenge Certificate at Advanced Level will be awarded the equivalent of an A*-E grade at A Level. This can be added to the UCAS points and help in your application to university! Agriculture Agriculture is more than just farming; it is one of the world s biggest businesses. There are over 200 different career areas available in agriculture. There is, at present, a very high demand throughout the industry for trained, educated and well-motivated young people to enter the industry. Not only does agriculture provide a fulfilling and interesting career choice, it also opens the doors to many other industries, due to the broad education, skills, training and experience that are required! The Fronlas Farm at our Newtown Campus is the base for all land-based learners and has a range of purpose-built classrooms and workshops in addition to the commercial working farm. The farm has 128 hectares (316 acres) split equally between Fronlas Farm at Newtown and Cefnybryn Farm at Sarn some 8 miles away. Both farms are run as one unit and carry around 150 beef cattle and 750 breeding sheep plus approximately 1,000 lambs. The farms grow mainly grass with some other cereal and forage crops. The farms provide an important practical resource for land-based and other learners and the Newtown Campus Themes Restaurant is supplied with both beef and lamb from the farm. The farms also supply both Morrisons and Sainsbury s with beef and lamb during the year.
