4 BA Accounting & Business The Flying Start degree programme The innovative and challenging Flying Start degree programme is designed to accelerate your route into employment, and your progress towards a professional accountancy qualification. Developed in partnership with PwC and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), it offers an exceptional blend of academic rigour, professional accreditation and real-world practical experience. About the Programme This is one of the fastest degree routes to becoming a Chartered Accountant in the UK. Over the four years of the Flying Start Programme you will gain a strong foundation in business and accountancy theory and complete a significant proportion of the work experience and technical study requirements needed to qualify as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant. In addition to a degree from a top business school, graduates who achieve a 2:1 and impress on their work placements are offered a permanent job with PwC upon graduation. Year 1 In the first year you will study alongside other students at Henley Business School in keeping with the traditional university experience. You will gain a thorough grounding in fundamental aspects of accounting, business, ethics and law. Placements in years 2-4 In the second and third years you will combine academic study with paid professional work placements at PwC, lasting weeks each. Your fourth year will include a final work placement of weeks. Over the course of the three placements you can expect to earn a competitive salary, offsetting a significant proportion of your tuition fees or living costs. During your placements, you ll join one of PwC s Assurance teams. You ll be supported by a network that includes staff from the University and PwC including a dedicated People Manager and support from previous graduates of the degree programme who will know exactly how you re feeling. 7 BSc Accounting & Economics This degree programme focuses on the broad areas of accounting and economics and is designed to prepare graduates for a variety of responsible and professional managerial roles in both the public and private sectors. About the programme At Henley Business School, we teach you the language of business. We focus on providing an understanding of finance to enable you to be successful in the business world. The accountancy element of the programme covers the core areas of financial reporting, management accounting, and business finance, and will enable you to develop detailed knowledge, critical understanding and a range of technical application skills. The economics element of the programme is designed to introduce you to and develop your understanding of economic theories, through the progressive study of the core theory and application of micro and macroeconomics. In your third year you have the opportunity to complete a one-year work placement, which will provide a valuable opportunity to apply and further develop your knowledge and skills. This experience will also enhance your CV and future graduate employment prospects and help you to build a professional network. You can also achieve a significant amount of credit for prior learning with respect to the ICAEW s Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualifications. About the programme This programme combines two key areas of business practice to provide students with a firm grounding for a variety of careers including accountancy, banking, retail, marketing and the civil service. You will gain a range of professional and technical skills, and a heightened sense of commercial awareness that will be immediately transferable to the business environment. The accountancy element covers the core areas of financial reporting, management accounting, and business finance, and will enable you to develop detailed knowledge, critical understanding and a range of technical application skills. This is complemented by the management aspects of the programme, which explore the factors, both internal and external to an organisation, that impact on its success. You will continue to study the core areas of accounting in your second and final years, while the management element will enable you to tailor your degree towards your own interests by exploring areas such as marketing, organisational behaviour, strategy, information systems, human resource management, entrepreneurship and ethics. In your third year you have the opportunity to complete a one-year work placement, providing a valuable opportunity to apply and further develop your knowledge and skills. I was aware that I would need some work experience in order to apply for a graduate job and it gave me the opportunity to decide if Assurance was right for me. 11 How to apply Competition for places on our undergraduate degree programmes is strong, so we advise that you apply as early as possible. If you have any questions at any stage of your application, please don t hesitate to contact us. UCAS All applications, whether you are from the UK, EU or overseas, should be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Please apply online using the University of Reading s UCAS code, READG R12. You should aim to submit your completed application between 1 September and 15 January for admission in October of that year. We don t normally interview individual applicants, so please ensure that your UCAS application features appropriate information highlighting your academic and extracurricular achievements. A strong personal statement is also essential. This should demonstrate an informed interest in the degree programme you have applied for, explain why you have chosen a particular programme, provide examples of your past achievements and reflect on how you will use and further develop your knowledge and skills throughout your time at university.
