Nearly one third of all ICT employment in the South West region is concentrated in Swindon. Vacancies are growing due to skills shortages across the industry. Almost 1 million people are employed in financial services in England. There are many varied occupations and careers available in this sector and the rewards can be high. Applied Science (Forensic) is also becoming increasingly popular and there are various job roles within the sector. 3 52 Call Student Services on: (01793) or visit LEVEL 1 Business Administration BTEC Introductory Diploma / 1 Year You ll learn about different types of products and services, innovation and creativity, market research and promotion. You could, for example, find out about a new product that could be sold by a shop in your area and carry out market research to find out whether it would be popular. Students are encouraged to develop their employability skills including independent working, time management, communication, research and teamwork. You will gain practical office-based experience and lessons will be enhanced using visits and guest speakers. Assessment throughout the units may be based on practical situations or scenarios. All students will complete a relevant work An interest in business. Minimum of Entry Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy is required. Progress on to the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Business or an alternative Level 2 programme, including Level 2 Apprenticeship in Business Administration. LEVEL 2 Business BTEC Diploma / 1 Year You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on investigating real workplaces. You will study: Business purposes Business organisations Financial forecasting for business People in organisations Verbal and non-verbal communication in business contexts Training and employment in business Business ethics Visual merchandising Working in business teams Promoting and branding retail business. Students will also have the opportunity to go on trips and visits and will take part in a work At least four GCSEs at Grade D or above including English and maths, a BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma or other related Level 1 qualification. 4 LEVEL 3 Business BTEC Diploma / 1 Year BTEC Extended National Diploma / 2 Years There is a real demand in Swindon for young people with business skills to join many of the major companies which operate here. This course will give you general business skills but also allow you to specialise in your chosen career area. You will study units in: Accounting Law Marketing and Promotion Starting a Small Business/Enterprise Ethics Event Management Communications and many more. Students learn by completing business projects and assignments that are based on investigating real workplaces. All students will carry out a work Equivalent to three A levels and attracts UCAS points in the same way You will need four GCSEs at Grade C and above, including English and maths or BTEC Level 2 Diploma at Merit grade or a suitable Level 2 qualification. All places are subject to interview. The Level 3 Extended Diploma is an accepted entry qualification to university level programmes including Foundation Degree and the BA (Hons) Business, Management and Communications at Swindon College. 5 54 Call Student Services on: (01793) or visit LEVEL 1 IT (Computing) BTEC Introductory Diploma / 1 Year This course is intended for individuals who have a basic understanding of IT. You will need to be interested in using the internet, graphics software, presentation software and spread sheet software. Units include: Starting Work in the IT Industry Developing Skills in IT Personal Effectiveness Financial Management Social Responsibility at Work Using the Internet IT Applications Digital Devices PC Systems. All students will complete a relevant work No prior knowledge of IT is required and entry is subject to a satisfactory interview. Students will need an interest in working in the IT industry. If you wish to continue in education you can progress to BTEC Level 2 Diploma in ICT or BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Business. Alternatively, you could enter employment at a junior level. LEVEL 2 IT (Computing) BTEC Diploma / 1 Year This is a practical, work-related course. Students learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. It introduces students to the employment area they have chosen and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification. The course is made up of a number of units which may include the following: Computer Systems Computer Hardware & Software Networks and Websites. All students will complete a relevant work You will normally need to have at least one of the following: Level 1 in ICT or at least four GCSEs at Grade D, preferably including maths and English. Entry is subject to a satisfactory interview. You could progress to Level 3 Diploma in IT if you achieve a C Grade in maths or an alternative Level 3 qualification. You may wish to apply for an IT Apprenticeship in a local company or other relevant employment.

6 55 LEVEL 3 IT (Computing) BTEC Diploma / 1 Year Equivalent to three A levels and attracts UCAS points in the same way BTEC Extended National Diploma / 2 Years The course is intended for those individuals who wish to learn networking, PC maintenance, business/multimedia use of ICT, computer works and software development. You will be interested in how the computer works and throughout the two years the subject of IT will be taught against a background that stresses the practical application of computing and information technology within organisations. Local companies such as Nationwide and BT may offer Apprenticeships to successful students. A high percentage of our students also progress on to higher education, studying Higher National Diplomas, Foundation Degrees or Honours Degrees in relevant subjects at Swindon College or university. Examples of the units of study could include: Communications and Employability Skills Computer systems Information systems Website production and management Software design and development Advanced database skills Digital graphics Event-driven programming Network management IT technical support IT systems troubleshooting and repair. All students will complete a relevant work Four GCSEs at Grade C or above including maths and English, or BTEC Level 2 Diploma (Merit). All places are subject to interview. Students finishing this course are welcomed in the local area as trainee and junior software developers (programmers), trainee network and PC technicians and helpdesk operators. 7 56 Call Apply Student online: Services on: (01793) or visit LEVEL 2/3 Accounting & Finance AAT & IFS / 1 Year Learners will study a suite of qualifications based around Accounting and Finance. These are a combination of Level 2 and Level 3 units. To gain the Level 2 AAT Certificate you will complete five units including: Basic Accounting I Basic double entry to Trial Balance including correction of errors and suspense account Basic Accounting II Cashbook, banking, petty cash, journals, and control accounts Basic Costing principles and providing cost and revenue information Working effectively in accounting and finance Computerised Accounting. Learners will also study for the IFS School of Finance Certificate in Personal Finance Level 2. This involves three units which are all assessed by paper based or e-tests: Personal Finance Encounters Money Management Solutions Personal Finance Management. Students will also study the BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Business and Personal Finance and Functional Skills IT. Four GCSEs at Grade A*- C, including maths and English. All places are subject to interview and a reference. Progress on to work in the finance sector or further study at Swindon College or another institution of your choice. Assessment of learning is through a portfolio of evidence, AAT s own practical skills tests and external examinations. Students may also wish to complement their studies by finding work placements.

Course units include: Chemistry and Our Earth Energy and Our Universe Biology and Our Environment Science and the World of Work The Living Body Monitoring the Environment Investigating a Crime Scene Science in Medicine. All students will complete a relevant work Entry on to the Diploma requires 4 GCSEs Grade D or above including English, maths and any science. Students will be required to work independently and be self-motivated. Entry is subject to satisfactory interview and reference. Progress to a higher level qualification, such as the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science (Forensic Science) offered at Swindon College. Applied Science (Forensic Science) BTEC Diploma / 1 Year BTEC Extended National Diploma / 2 Years The BTEC Diploma is a full-time Level 3 course, over one or two years. First year units will include: Fundamentals of Science Maths for Science Scientific Practical Techniques Chemical Laboratory Techniques Scientific Investigation Criminal Psychology. In the second year you will be covering units which may include working in the science industry, medical physics techniques, scientific investigation, criminology, genetics and genetic engineering, forensic evidence collection and analysis. All students will complete a relevant work Entry on to the Diploma requires 4 GCSEs Grade C or above in English, maths and science (any science). Level 2 Forensic Science with an overall merit. Students will be required to work independently and be self-motivated. Entry subject to interview and reference. Students may wish to apply for jobs as laboratory technicians or other science jobs or go on to university level courses such as HNDs, Foundation Degrees or Honours Degrees.

10 University Level 59 LEVEL 4/5 Foundation Degree Business, Management and Communications A work-based Foundation Degree designed for students who are interested in a career in marketing, finance, human resources or general management. Successful students may progress to the BA (Hons) Degree in Business Management & Communication at Swindon College. AAT Accounting This course is aimed at those working or intending to work as Accounting Technicians/support staff in accountancy and finance functions. LEVEL 6 BA (Hons) Degree Business, Management and Communications The BA (Hons) is a work-based degree and as such lectures are concentrated on one day per week, enabling students to work and combine private study to suit their own personal commitments. LEVEL 7 Professional Graduate Compulsory Certificate in Education (PGCE) This is an in-service part time course for those teaching in the Life Long Learning Sector; this might be in schools/further education, higher education, the health service, adult and community education, prison education, the armed forces or private training providers.
