2 Introduction Welcome to Frome College Post 16 joining our GCSE plus courses. It is an exciting time to be joining Post 16 at Frome. Last year saw us record our best ever results and our truly purpose built Frome Futures Post 16 Centre offers excellent study facilities. The Frome Futures Centre, alongside the raising of the school leaving age, offer us an exciting opportunity to expand and build upon our already very ful Level (GCSE) programme. To answer this increased demand we have broadened our Level provision and now offer our students the opportunity to add and improve upon the qualifications they achieved in Year 11 and prepare them for the transition to Level 3 (A Level) the following year or to help them to secure apprenticeships and/or employment with training. We have a proven track record of students achieving well on our GCSE plus courses and continuing on to study Level 3 courses. We encourage you to apply and look forward to meeting you. Kerry Tarrant Post 16 Director of Learning Bruce Hain Vice Principal

3 Application Procedure for September 014 Entry Date Wednesday 13 November 013 November / December 013 Friday 6 December 013 January 014 March 014 Wednesday July 014 Thursday 1 August 014 Details Post 16 Open Evening 5 8pm Please make every effort to attend this crucially important evening for students and parents. Advice & Guidance for Post 16 Advice and Guidance available from Mrs Kerry Tarrant/Mr Bruce Hain, Level 3 and from Mr Tim Clarke, Level + SEN. Initial Application Deadline for Post 16 Please note that applications will be accepted after this time but that the timetable blocking system will be based on applications made by this date and so it may be less likely that any particular subject combination is possible. Interviews Year 11 into Year 1 interviews will take place to make sure the right students are on the right courses. Final Application Forms Final application forms to be submitted to: Mrs K Tarrant Post 16 Director of Learning Frome College Bath Road Somerset BA11 HQ Introduction to Post 16 Day This compulsory event is intended to ensure a smooth transition from Year 11 into Year 1. This will be your first day as a Post 16 student, including your first lessons in most of your courses; as such, attendance is considered compulsory for students applying to Post 16. GCSE Results Day. Important Information a) The Course Guides indicate the courses we are intending to offer for September 014 and the information is accurate at the time of publication. The running of any courses, however, is subject to sufficient uptake. b) The option blocks are not constructed until after March 014 once initial student requests have been received. Option blocks will be scheduled to meet student requests as far as possible. No guarantee can, however, be given that a particular combination will definitely be available. c) Inevitably some courses always prove more popular than others. If you wish to change courses, we will do our best to accommodate this change; but we cannot guarantee that a popular course will not be full, or that an unviable course will be run. Some subjects expect students to attend compulsory after school lectures as part of the teaching programme.

4 Qualifications The entry requirement for Level courses is normally two GCSE passes at Grade D or above. BTEC Level Course Title GCSE Equivalence Level BTEC Extended Certificate 4 GCSEs Level BTEC Certificate Level BTEC Award GCSEs 1 GCSE GCSE Contributions to courses We offer GCSE re-sits in English Language and Mathematics. In addition we offer GCSE Media Studies as a one year qualification. Where possible we seek to minimise the costs students incur during their Post 16 study, however, it is necessary to charge for some materials, particularly for practical courses. Where students suffer financial difficulties, we have some student support funds available through the Government s Bursary Fund. Financial support is means tested and allocated according to need. Please note:- The subjects listed in this guide are the courses we are equipped to deliver subject to sufficient numbers of students opting to study them during the application process.

6 Student Leadership Post 16 GCSE PLUS COURSE GUIDE Part of the ethos of the College is to develop leadership opportunities for young people. The Senior Student Team is elected annually from those in their last year at the College. The Student Council The Student Council is made up of students from all years. They are encouraged to participate actively in what goes on in the College and to feed back to members of the Senior Leadership Team. Our Student Union Our Student Union aims to make Post 16 as enjoyable as possible for each and every student. In order to do this our roles include bringing both years together for social activities such as parties and fund-raising events. With a variety of individuals in the Student Union, we pride ourselves on representing a large cross-section of the views of Post 16 students and taking on board everyone s suggestions and putting them into action. Welcome from our Head Boy and Head Girl Throughout your time here at Frome College, you will have been given some amazing opportunities; from travelling to exotic places around the world, to aiding your peers in their studies. When you join Post 16, the skills that you accumulated over the past three years will be put to good use by your teachers in every subject. Frome College Post 16 is all about preparing you for the wider world, whilst at the same time creating some unforgettable memories and giving you the best education possible. My advice for in Post 16 is to grab every opportunity you can with both hands, and to use every resource possible to prepare for your future after College. Josh White, Head Boy Post 16 provides you with a new approach to learning which, despite an increase in work load opens new areas of study and allows you to develop your own individual learning style. There is also a range of extra-curricular activities and opportunities; getting involved in the running of Post 16 through the student union, senior student body, amongst many others. Being a member of the senior student body has taught me valuable skills and allowed me to develop my understanding of my own abilities. Whatever you are interested in doing in Post 16, there will always be an opportunity for you to get involved and offer your own initiatives and opinions. Putting yourself out there is definitely the best way to make use of your time at Post 16 and gain everything that you can from it. I have really enjoyed my experience in Post 16 at Frome and am sure that you will too. Mollie Warde, Head Girl
