3 Pathway to Independent Living at Derby College This course is aimed at individuals who have additional learning needs and who wish to further develop skills which will help them become more independent in the future. You will complete a personalised programme. Following an initial assessment period at the beginning of your programme, you and your personal tutor will devise an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which will identify agreed targets for learning and the activities you will complete to support you in achieving these targets. Travel training to support you in accessing public transport independently Food preparation which includes budgeting, shopping and either basic meal preparation or more advanced meal or food preparation Horticulture Woodwork Creative projects Media/ICT projects Projects working in the community You will be initially assessed for a period of time at the beginning of the course to help devise your personalised programme. Assessment will then be on-going throughout the year, with progress towards your targets being reviewed with your personal tutor each half term. The support you receive in each class will be reviewed throughout the year. There are no formal entry requirements. You will have an individual guidance interview to assess your needs and suitability for the course If, at the end of the year, you have made good progress and have the potential to achieve more, there may be the opportunity to complete another year on this programme. You can also consider progressing to a higher level course at the College or to seek employment and training. Post 16 Curriculum Page 3 of 15

4 Introductory Diploma in Catering and Hospitality at Burton and South Derbyshire College This course will help students gain the skills needed to work in the catering industry. This programme is a good introduction to a career in hospitality and catering. You will find out about the kinds of jobs involved in the industry, develop practical skills and investigate the materials, ingredients and equipment used in the industry. Units could include: Basic food preparation and cooking Food service Kitchen equipment Health, safety and hygiene Customer care Employment skills You will complete tasks that show that you have gained new skills, understand how to use small and large commercial equipment, serve customers and work safely and hygienically. Minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade G or above (or Entry 3 / Level 1 Functional Skills equivalent in English and maths); successful interview and initial assessment; successful completion of Entry Level (progressing learners). The Certificate is an industry recognised qualification and will support you in a job within the catering and hospitality sector or an apprenticeship. 5 Level 1 Certificate in Fabrication and Welding at Burton and South Derbyshire College This course is a great way to gain experience and an insight into engineering. Cover areas including working safely in an engineering environment, cutting and shaping metal, TIG, MMA, arc welding and gas welding. Verbal (sign supported through TSC) theory questioning and Practical Performance Observation. Minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade G or above (or Entry 3/Level 1 Functional Skills equivalent in English and maths); successful interview and initial assessment; successful completion of Entry Level (progressing learners). Employment as a trainee in an engineering environment. Level 2 Fabrication and Welding course. Post 16 Curriculum Page 5 of 15

6 Level 1 Diploma in Fabrication and Welding at Burton and South Derbyshire College This course is a great way to gain experience and an insight into engineering. You will gain a basic foundation for a career within the engineering sector, with a focus on fabrication and welding disciplines. You will develop experience in performing engineering operations, along with hand skills and practical confidence in engineering disciplines. You will gain skills and knowledge through a variety of practical and theoretical sessions. Minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade G or above (or Entry 3/Level 1 Functional Skills equivalent in English and maths); successful interview and initial assessment; successful completion of Entry Level (progressing learners). After successful completion, you can go on to study a Level 2 course in Fabrication and Welding, including Apprenticeships. You could also seek employment in the engineering industry in a welding discipline. Post 16 Curriculum Page 6 of 15

7 Level 1 Award in Animal Care at Derby College, Broomfield These courses are perfect for anyone wishing to work with animals. You will develop your knowledge and skills in animal husbandry, including: feeding, cleaning, grooming, giving medication and health checks. You will also benefit from visits to animal care establishments to look at various animal care career opportunities and you will attend a suitable work experience placement. By arrangement, established through interview. You can progress onto the Level 2 in Animal Care or you may wish to start an Apprenticeship within the animal care industry. Generally, work in this industry deals with the health, welfare, handling and supervision of animals whether that s working in a zoo or wildlife park, or for the RSPCA. 8 Level 1 Diploma in Animal Care at Derby College, Broomfield If you have a strong interest in caring for animals, this course will place you in good stead for a rewarding career. You will be involved in handling, feeding and watering animals, preparing and maintaining animal accommodation, and ensuring the health and welfare of animals. You will learn about animals in the wild and society. You will be required to compile a portfolio of evidence reflecting your achievements throughout the course and to take an online multiple choice test towards the end of the course. By arrangement, established through interview. If you do well on this course, it may be possible to progress to an Intermediate Diploma You must have a minimum of a Merit grade to progress to the Intermediate Diploma. This course is your first step towards any of the wide range of fascinating careers that involve working with animals. Post 16 Curriculum Page 8 of 15

9 Level 2 Diploma in Childcare at Access Training The Childcare courses are for people who want to work with children and young people. A typical childcare setting will be a nursery, preschool or playgroup. A typical role will be a early years worker, care worker or nursery nurse. The roles will usually involve things like, supporting children s learning and development through play and communication. It will also involve helping with activities such as snack time, story time and outside play. You will attend classes for 2 days a week to study childcare theory. During the course, you must also attend a suitable work placement. You will develop your skills in things such as health, safety and hygiene and child development. You will also need to gain practical experience working with children aged 0-5 in a childcare setting and will complete tasks such as child observation, play activities and development and learning. Tests of your knowledge and skills. If you want to work with children and want to achieve a qualification while gaining valuable work experience then this is a suitable course for you. We are looking for learners who have a positive, approachable nature and are flexible and organised. You can progress onto an Advanced Apprenticeship or continue onto Childcare Level 3.Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing at Lees Brook Provide skills and knowledge to work as a hairdresser. Units in the course include: Cutting basic techniques Setting and dressing hair Hair colour, Shampoo, Condition Treating Hair and scalp Consulting Clients Reception Duties Promote additional services Health and Safety Positive impression of self and organisation Post 16 Curriculum Page 9 of 15

11 Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating at Derby College, Hudson This programme will help you develop the skills required to enter a specific trade within the construction industry. You will gain the painting and decorating skills needed for construction, giving you the opportunity to progress to higher levels. Practical and theoretical tests will be delivered throughout the programme. Units will include safe working practices, communication skills, wallpapering and painting techniques, and calculating quantities and areas. Assessment is through observation of practical work. You may be required to undertake real trade projects on which you will also be assessed. Your maths and English skills will be assessed through a controlled assessment or final exam. Offers of a place on the course are dependent on qualifications and practical aptitude, and you need at least grade E GCSE in Maths and English. Following a successful interview and initial assessment results, students will be allocated a place to study the practical and theoretical elements of painting and decorating. You can progress to a Level 3 Diploma in Painting and Decorating as a fulltime learner. There is also the potential to enter an apprenticeship or employment in the construction industry. 12 Level 3 Diploma in Animal Care at Derby College, Broomfield If you would like to pursue a rewarding and interesting career in the animal care industry, this course will equip you with the skills you need. Combining theory and practical work, it includes a period of industry experience. Animal Accommodation, Animal Health, Anatomy and Physiology, Animal Feeding, Animal Biology, Animal Handling, Work-related Experience, Investigative Project, Animal Behaviour, Animal Nursing, Animal Welfare, Dog Grooming, Exotic Animal Health and Husbandry, Pet Store Management, Zoological Animal Health and Husbandry, Animal Nutrition, Animal Training, Wildlife Rehabilitation, and Farm Livestock Husbandry. This course is continually assessed throughout the year. The various assessment methods include written reports, practical assessments, online tests and work placement reports. You need four GCSEs at grade C or above including English, Science and Maths. Ideally, applicants should have some experience of working with animals. To progress to year 2 of this course, you will be required to obtain a Pass or above during your first year. You can progress to a foundation degree or honours degree in a related area. Careers The course can put you on the path to careers in roles such as veterinary nurse or zoo keeper, as well as supervisory roles in rescue centres, pet stores, kennels, catteries and dog grooming salons. 13 Level 3 Diploma in Art and Design (2 Years) at Derby College This course is specifically designed for those whose next step will be to study at higher education (HE) and will provide you with the opportunity and skills to create a high quality personal portfolio of work for HE entry. During the course, you will study 3D design, sculpture, photography, fine art and illustration, textiles, fashion, graphics, multimedia and animation. Portfolio of evidence collected during the course. Either 2 A Levels (one art-related) or a Level 3 art/design related subject, combined with 5 GCSEs at C or above, including Maths, English and an Art & Design subject. You ll also attend a short interview and present a selection of your work. After successful completion, you can go on to study at degree level on one of our Foundation Degrees in Digital Media or Contemporary Arts Practice, or to seek employment within your chosen career specialism.

14 Level 3 Diploma in Motor Mechanics at Derby College, Hudson This Level 3 course is for those wishing to specialise in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, preparing for a career in the motor industry or for those wanting to progress to university level courses. Health and Safety, Tools, Equipment and Materials, G3 Skills in Supporting Job Roles, Diagnose Engine Systems and Components, Diagnose Chassis Systems and Components, Diagnose Electrical Systems and Components, Diagnose Transmission Systems and Components, Inspecting Light Vehicles Using Prescribed Methods, A-level equivalent Maths units (for progression to university), A minimum of five days work experience in a motor vehicle environment. Underpinning knowledge will be assessed via online external tests and assignments for all units. Practical activities are assessed in our centre using externally set criteria. Level 3 Maths and G3 job roles are assessed by written assignments and online exams. You must have achieved BOTH Maths and English GCSE at grade C or above and the full Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair. You should also have passed the mechanical comprehension entrance test, alongside a successful interview. Subject to achieving the Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair and the Level 3 Maths units, with a successful application you would be eligible to apply for a Foundation Degree/Degree in Motorsport at university. Without the Level 3 Maths unit, your pathway would be restricted to an apprenticeship (if employment is secured). Post 16 Curriculum Page 14 of 15

15 Level 3 Diploma in Wood Occupations at New College Nottingham This course offers you further knowledge and skills needed to progress within the trade. Knowledge of how to and: carry out safe working practices in Construction use information, quantities and communicate with others use building methods and Construction technology carry out first fixing operations carry out second fixing operations erect complex structural carcassing components maintain and install non-structural and structural components set up and use fixed and transportable machinery Each unit is continually assessed. You will present evidence of competence via practical assessments and production of a personal portfolio. You will also need to sit a GOLA exam at the end of the course or individual modular exams. 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C including English Language or Maths* A relevant Level 2 qualification including GCSE English Language or Maths* at grade A*-C. Functional Skills may be accepted instead of GCSE English and/or Maths. Functional Skills Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE Grade D and Level 2 to GCSE Grade C. If you are employed and have access to work based evidence you may be able to enrol onto an NVQ in Site Carpentry. Career opportunities include employment as a trainee carpenter.
