2 Foundation Degree What is a Foundation degree? Foundation degrees are intermediate level Higher Education qualifications which are delivered by colleges and universities working in partnerships with employers. The Hertfordshire Higher Education Consortium offers foundation degrees which are awarded by the University of Hertfordshire and are recognised as: stand-alone qualifications that are highly valued by employers a progression route that allows you to achieve a BA or BSc Honours degree by undertaking the final year and graduating after only one further year of study. If you are unsure whether to choose study or work, this is the perfect qualification for you, as it entails much more hands-on work experience, higher level learning application and the development of practical skills that are needed in today s demanding working environments. Foundation degrees include substantial elements of workbased learning and as they are developed in close collaboration with employers they ensure that you are provided with a personal development route for both your current and future career, as well as meeting the needs of employers. This is why they are greatly valued in the industry and are highly recommended if you wish to significantly improve your career prospects. Foundation degrees can be very flexible, offering you opportunities for both full-time and parttime study depending on your circumstances and they can be studied in only two years if studied full time. The degree is suitable if you are: a student who has completed Level 3 qualifications (e.g. A levels, Advanced Apprenticeships, BTEC National Diploma or NVQ3) looking to embark on a career change already in employment but want to gain Higher Education qualifications You don t always need to have formal qualifications for entry onto a Foundation degree. Your past experience, achievements and desire to learn are all taken into account. Where can I study for a Foundation degree? Please note that not all programmes are offered at all colleges.

When your Foundation degree has been successfully completed, you are entitled to use letters after your name, the exact style will be determined by the type of course taken, for example FdA (Arts) or FdSc (Science).

4 Foundation Degree Entry Requirements 120 points, including one GCE A Level or equivalent, plus 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language, Single Award Science and Mathematics or equivalent. How is the programme assessed? The programme is assessed through a combination of coursework, exams, presentations, vivas and project placements. Students are expected to achieve 40% in each assessment to gain unit creditation. What will I learn? This course covers a range of sports themes and its modules are set around Sports Coaching, Sport and Fitness Development, Sports Management, and the disciplines that support sports performance. This course will provide a mixture of academic skills and has a strong emphasis on developing practical, workbased learning skills and qualifications. The coaching modules are taught at the outstanding Hertfordshire Sports Village on the de Havilland Campus at the University of Hertfordshire. A brief outline of what you will study in each module is detailed on the following pages. Year 1 Semester A Social Aspects of Sports & Exercise This module involves an examination of foundational sociological concepts, theories, and research. The importance of sports sociology within the interdisciplinary study of sport is highlighted, and the essentially social nature of sport within an interpersonal and culturally influenced setting is emphasised. Study Skills for Higher Education This module equips you for the demands of Higher Education. You will develop your research and evaluative skills and time management through both class tasks and assignments. You ll be introduced to new information sources such as electronic journals. You will maintain evidence of your progress and evaluate processes undertaken. Introduction to Sports Coaching This module will introduce the concept of sports coaching and the principles and theories involved in the coaching process. These theories will be reinforced through practical sessions and coach shadowing. You ll be required to produce an action plan for your own development following the coach shadowing process. You will also identify relevant vocational qualifications needed to improve your development. Physiology & Movement Analysis This module will examine organic systems within the human body and explain how they are used in sport and exercise. Learning will take place through lectures and seminars allowing you to gain theoretical knowledge and demonstrate your understanding in practical settings. Year 1 Semester B Practical Aspects of Sports Science This module builds on your introduction to sports coaching and physiology and movement analysis studies. You will learn how exercise affects the different body systems and how they can test and improve these through different methods of fitness training. You will develop the ability to analyse test results and make recommendations. Sports Industry Management This module provides a broad introduction to management within the sports industry sector. You will get an overview of the nature of the contemporary sports industry, particularly within the United Kingdom, but not excluding overseas examples. You ll examine how a sports organisation is structured and consider the practical application of a variety of management and leadership theories and how they relate to the sports industry.

5 Sports Studies Sports Marketing & Event Promotion Using a real world contemporary sporting environment, you will develop an understanding of how marketing works, using research to develop realistic solutions to marketing challenges. You will also consider the importance of events within the sports industry and investigate the different strategic plans formulated when managing large scale events. Fundamentals of Sports Development This module will give you an insight into the emerging importance and growth of sports development, and the role it plays in promoting sport and exercise both nationally and locally. You will research specific initiatives to appreciate their significance to the sporting community. There is also a core of work-based learning, culminating in a project for a local employer. The Developing Personal Transferable Skills module does not accrue any credits. It is aimed at highlighting the importance of gaining skills which are transferable between educational settings and which are valuable for professional practice.

6 Foundation Degree Year 2 Semester A Sport, Health & Exercise Issues This module looks at the importance of sport, health and exercise and associated contemporary issues in society. You will focus on the importance of sport and physical activity to maintain health and promote an active lifestyle. Alongside this you ll examine the principal risk factors to health and assess the relevance to specific demographic groups across the population. Sociocultural Dynamics of Sports & Exercise This module helps you to gain knowledge and understanding of the different cultures and societies related to a diverse range of contemporary activities. You will gain an awareness of your own skills in leadership, teamwork and other related personal skills as well as the effects these activities have on the surrounding socio-cultural environments. Applications of Sports Science Support This module will allow the students to understand how the sub-disciplines of nutrition and psychology can be used by sports coaches to help support and improve performance. This will include explaining the functions of the different nutrients and identifying the nutritional strategies that can be used by performers. Students will also investigate psychological theories and strategies that can be applied to sports performance settings. Workbased Learning (Semester A and B) The Workbased Learning module allows you to expand, develop and apply the knowledge and skills you have learnt in a work-related situation. The amount of time spent in a work situation carrying out the project will be negotiated between the student, employer and College. Some students may spend a considerable amount of time with the employer while others will spend only a minimum amount of time depending on circumstances and requirements.

7 Sports Studies Developing Personal Transferable Skills (no credit value Semester A and B) This module allows you to complete a portfolio of evidence, in connection with the assessments and experiences gained throughout your course. You will reflect on your development with the help of a personal tutor, allowing you to further evaluate, develop and enhance your skills. The skills to be assessed are: autonomy, group working, communication (written and oral), problem solving, numeracy, information management, self-evaluation and reflective practice. Year 2 Semester B Applied Sports Management This module develops the skills and knowledge introduced to students through the Sports Industry Management unit. You will examine advanced aspects of managerial skills such as managing and developing people. You will focus on the internal organisational environment and other aspects of behaviour such as organisational culture. A case study approach will be used to consider entrepreneurship. Applied Research Techniques for Sports Studies This module prepares you for bachelors programme assignments, the level three dissertation project and research tasks which may be required during employment. Research areas include sports management, sports coaching, (including the supporting sub disciplines), and sports development, making use of relevant quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis techniques in sports studies. Developing Sports Coaching The module will help you to further develop coaching philosophies which are relevant to your practice. This will involve the deeper examination of coaching theory and principles, and reflection on your own practice. You will be required to plan, deliver and evaluate your own applied sports coaching sessions.
