Secondary Education Computer Science with Information and Communication Technology Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Including a Recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status and Master s-level Credits) OR Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (Including a Recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status) Avery Hill Campus gre.ac.uk/education
Why study this programme? This programme is designed to prepare student teachers to become professional, competent and reflective teachers of computer science (CS), digital applications (DA) and information and communications technology (ICT). It focuses on addressing the needs of students aged 11 to 16. You should study this programme if you want to: Become a dynamic teacher of computing with learners aged 11 to 16 Develop your knowledge and understanding of CS, DA and ICT within the context of existing and future programmes of study and examination courses Widen your individual skills, expertise and background knowledge across the field of Computer Science, Digital Applications with the opportunity to participate in Computing at School Master Classes if appropriate Work in a profession that seeks to promote the achievement and wellbeing of all students.
In addition to covering all aspects of Computer Science, Digital Applications and ICT education and addressing all the relevant government standards, this programme aims to help student teachers develop as effective practitioners. University workshop sessions cover a wide range of topics, including planning lessons, assessment for learning, managing behaviour for learning, programming and robotics. There is also the opportunity to work collaboratively with student teachers from other subject areas such as science, mathematics, music and PE. I really enjoyed the programme from the start. I was given opportunities to train in school, and the e-portfolio was excellent. Soraya Aziz Graduate Why study with us? The Department of Secondary Education, Lifelong Learning Teacher Education & Physical Education and Sport is part of the university s Faculty of Education & Health. We offer a broad range of interrelated programmes across a variety of subject specialisms. These are designed for people who wish to develop their teaching capacities and professionalisms to teach older children and young and mature adults. The department exemplifies the very best practice in teaching and learning through interactive lectures and seminars, electronic media, peer learning, tutorials and a wide variety of resources. Our programmes of initial teacher education enable students to become professional, creative and reflective educators. We prepare our students to enter the teaching profession with enthusiasm and confidence. They are able to inspire, challenge and motivate their learners and to develop their own professional identity. We are proud of the pastoral care we provide, which supports our students in achieving their potential. Some students apply from unconventional backgrounds or have chosen to change career. We embrace the diversity and experience that these students can bring to our programmes. Partnership working is at the core of our ethos and values. This is because we recognise teaching and learning as a collaborative social process. Therefore, we are committed to pursuing collaborative teaching and learning partnerships in and between educational settings. The department is located on our Avery Hill Campus, which is set in pleasant parkland in south-east London. Avery Hill has convenient transport links to our other campuses and to Kent and central London. The Students Union University of Greenwich ( organises a variety of sports and social activities on campus. What will you study? Subject Knowledge and Pedagogy 1 (30 credits) Subject Knowledge and Pedagogy 2 (30 credits) Professional Studies Secondary-School- Based Research (45 credits) School Placements A and B (30 credits) Professional Development Portfolio (as a record of the standards for Qualified Teacher Status) (15 credits)
Key facts UTT code: IX99 Attendance: The programme runs full-time for 36 weeks over a year. This includes 24 weeks spent in a range of schools on teaching experience. The remainder of the training is carried out at Avery Hill Campus in Eltham, south-east London, where trainees have the benefit of tuition from experienced tutors. You must attend all university lectures and workshops and during teaching experience must work the same hours as teachers (this is longer than the school-timetabled day). Good attendance and punctuality are essential aspects of professionalism and form part of your assessment throughout the programme. Entry requirements: You should have: A 2.2 or above in an honours degree in computing, web applications, ICT or a subject that has substantial subject-related content. PLUS GCSEs at grade C or above in English language and mathematics or recognised equivalents. You must also: Demonstrate clear written and spoken English Attend an interview Demonstrate interest, experience, skills and commitment related to teaching Pass pre-entry skills tests in numeracy and literacy before beginning the programme Undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check and an occupational health screening. It is recommended that applicants spend time observing in a secondary school before interview. How to apply: Apply online through the UCAS Teacher Training scheme at teacher-training.
Career opportunities Graduates from this programme can pursue a teaching career in secondary schools. Teaching and assessment The initial basis for monitoring your progress will be an audit of your current skills, experience and expertise. This will enable tutors to advise you and direct you into areas of practice that may need further development or support. During two school-based placements, you will be allocated a mentor, who will be a teacher specialising in ICT. Your mentor will observe you as you teach and offer you help and guidance alongside a tutor from the university. Courses are assessed through a professional portfolio, assignments, maintenance of a teaching file and observation of classroom skills. Some of the lectures, seminars and workshops are common to all PGCE Secondary subjects and are concerned with professional issues. The PGCE seemed to be a real learning curve at first: we had lots of tasks to complete, and initially I had to refresh my memory on packages I had used in the past, as well as learning new software. I found, however, that I was well prepared for my first placement and was lucky enough to have an excellent school mentor, as well as ongoing support from the university. Although I was a mature student, a number of years older than many of my peers, this was of no consequence. I was placed in a new academy where I had to deploy a myriad of skills. Not for one minute did I regret the decision, late in life, to go into teaching. I feel ready for my NQT year. Richard Jones Graduate You will be given the opportunity to submit work at Master s level, which will provide extra credits towards further postgraduate study; this will also change the title of the award from Professional Graduate Certificate in Education to Postgraduate Certificate in Education.
