Subject Information Key Stage 4 The Government introduced a measure for assessing progress at KS4 termed the best 8. Of these 8 subjects two must include English and maths and a further 3 must come from facilitating subjects. At Beauchamp facilitating subjects include Science, History, Geography, Computer Science, French and German. The other 3 subjects in the best 8 measure can come from a range of different approved subjects. It is likely that this measure will become more important in the future for students when applying for university, further training and jobs, so as a result we have designed our curriculum choices to reflect this and give your son/daughter every chance of success in the future. Therefore we ask students to select two guidance courses to study from the facilitating subjects and two further option courses from the range of subjects available. We believe that this will give your son/daughter both a chance to pursue their interests as well as future proofing them for the ever changing job market. Core Subjects All students at Beauchamp follow a range of core subjects including GCSEs in: English Language English Literature Mathematics Science (Dual Award) Ethics, Philosophy & Religion (RE) Alongside this there is core PE which is a non-examination subject. Guidance Subjects In addition to the core subjects studied in Year 10 our guidance programme allows most students to study an additional four subjects. Students are requested to choose two guidance subjects: Computer Science Geography History Modern Foreign Languages (French, German or Spanish) Single (Triple) Science They will study both of the subjects that they choose. Option Subjects Students are requested to choose four of the options subjects, in order of preference (one being the most preferred). They will study two of these at Key Stage 4. Below is the list of GCSE option subjects (unless otherwise stated) taught at Key Stage 4 at Beauchamp. Art & Design Business Studies L2 Child Development & Care Dance Drama Economics Food Technology French Geography Graphic Products L2 Hair & Beauty BTEC Health & Social Care History Information Technology Mandarin Media Studies Music BTEC Music Technology GCSE PE BTEC Production Arts Product Design Sociology L2 Sports Studies Textiles 1

Core Subjects English English will develop students reading, writing and communication skills, skills that are essential and transferrable. Students will learn about English literary heritage and other cultures throughout the course. They will be given the opportunity to develop their creative writing abilities and engage with drama, both on an individual and group basis. They will engage with presentations, learn to use appropriate language for varying audiences and purposes, and improve their spelling, punctuation and grammar skills. Students can access two GCSEs in English; English Language and English Literature. The breadth of study is far reaching, helping to equip students with the necessary tools in order to be successful, capable citizens of the 21st Century. Maths Mathematics is fascinating, enabling you to explore the world: spotting patterns, manipulating numbers and algebra. It is fundamental for understanding science, technology, society, finance and engineering. It develops thinking, comprehension, problem solving and understanding data skills. These skills are fundamental for 21st Century life; maths puts the fun into fundamental! Science The scientist is not a person who gives the right answers, he s the one who asks the right questions. - Claude Lévi-Strauss Core PE Core PE is a compulsory part of a students timetable in Years 10 and 11. Students are timetabled two lessons a week of PE in which they experience a broad range of activities from the traditional football and netball to the more modern activities of ultimate frisbee and a variety of exercise classes. Students will cover ten different activities in Year 10 and five of their choice in the Year 11 programme. Our aim in PE is to encourage students to become excited about taking part in physical activity with a view to positively influencing lifestyle choices. In addition, our main focus in lessons is of enjoyment, participation and progression at all levels. Ethics, Philosophy & Religion (RE) Short Course (Year 10) The following 4 topics are studied from a range of religious and nonreligious responses: Religion and Prejudice Religion and Animal Rights Religion, War and Peace Religion and Early Life Full GCSE Course Optional (Year 11) Students continuing to a full GCSE in Religious Studies in Year 11 study the following 4 topics: Matters of Life (medical ethics) The Elderly and Death Drug Abuse Crime and Punishment Students study OCR 21st Century Dual Science. The five lessons per week lead to two Science GCSEs. The course prepares them for A Level sciences. 3

Guidance Subjects Students pick two guidance subjects to study alongside their core lessons. Computer Science If you are interested in science, maths or technology this course is for you. It looks at computer systems, hardware, software, databases and networks. It introduces the principles of representing data and how we can solve problems with algorithms that enable us to write computer programs. Consider a GCSE in computing if you enjoy logic puzzles, would like to write code, or just want to know more about the digital devices that shape all our lives. Geography Geography is about the interaction between people and the natural environment. There now are over 7 billion people on the planet who all need food, housing and work. The challenge of the 21st Century is sustainable development and how to raise living standards without causing irreversible damage to the environment. History History is a popular subject at Beauchamp. We look at 20th Century History which is interesting and relevant. If you choose History it means that your work in KS3 will not be wasted, and you can then go on to study a very well respected subject at A level. Modern Foreign Languages French, German or Spanish Effective communication is the key to peace, prosperity and success. In today s world we have to interact on a global scale. Governments, industries and communities often have to converse in foreign languages and will need linguists. An understanding of a foreign language further develops communication skills. We believe that it is important for everyone to learn a language and experience the riches that other cultures have to offer. Single (Triple) Sciences Students gain a GCSE in each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. They follow the OCR 21st Century Science syllabus and have eight science lessons per week. The course is identical to the dual science course but with an extra unit of each science. These extra units include Health and New Technologies (Biology), Organic Chemistry and Equilibria (Chemistry) and Studying the Universe (Physics). The course is not necessary for Medicine or Dentistry but might appeal to students who have particular interest in science. Great place to learn. Fun, good lessons, good teachers and a nice environment - Student Quote 5

Options Subjects Students are requested to choose four of the options subjects, in order of preference. Students should receive two of their subjects, however there are exceptional circumstances where this is not possible and in such cases we would contact you to discuss other options. The Guidance subjects (page 5) can also be chosen for Option Subjects as long as they havent already been chosen as a Guidance Subject choice. Art & Design Do you love to be creative? Are you interested in painting, drawing, printing and mixed media/collage and sculpture? Do you enjoy learning about work by famous artists? If you can answer yes to these questions then GCSE Art & Design may be for you! Business Studies The word business is actually derived from the idea of busy-ness. This idea of busy-ness quite accurately describes most organisations: they are busy organising resources, producing, selling, managing people and keeping track of the finances. In GCSE Business Studies you will find out how a business does this. Level 2 Child Development & Care This course provides the opportunity to gain a vocational qualification that is an introduction to the childcare sector. The course includes knowledge and understanding of child development and well-being. It is aimed at learners who wish to be introduced to childcare and development for children aged 0-5years. Dance Dance is an exciting and challenging subject that supports and improves creative and expressive skill. You will learn about the art of creating and performing dance work as well as aspects of health and safety, professional dance work and companies, costume, lighting, setting and sound. An excellent course for students interested in performing arts. Drama Drama offers you the background to build your confidence and show yourself at your best to the world. Useful for doctors, lawyers, teachers - in fact everyone! Can you stand up calm and confident in front of people or an audience? Are you relaxed in new situations? If so, this course would be perfect for you! Economics Economics is a science. The world s resources are scarce but human wants are infinite. Economics deals with this basic problem. By studying Economics you will learn the economist s approach to issues and problems, and their way of thinking about the world. It is a subject which will stretch you academically and challenge you intellectually. Food Technology In Food Technology you will develop your practical skills and learn about food science, nutrition, health and safety, new product development and the food industry. Do you enjoy cooking? Can you rely on yourself to remember to bring in your ingredients? If so, this course could be perfect for you! French Course information is the same as when taken as a Modern Foreign Language Guidance Subject (p.5). 7

Geography Course information is the same as when taken as a Guidance Subject (p.5). Graphic Products Graphic Products is a highly popular choice for those interested in the arty, creative side of Design and those who enjoy communicating ideas through the marriage of images, typography and colour. Throughout the course you will develop skills in illustration, typography, and use Photoshop and Illustrator to bring your ideas to life. Level 2 Hair & Beauty The course combines both practical and theory assessments comprising of four units; photographic make-up, nail painting, creative hair and health and safety. Alongside this students learn to work as a team and use business and entrepreneurial skills to organise an event in a creative way. Work will be assessed regularly throughout the year with one unit externally modified. The course carries a GCSE equivalence A*-C. With the practical side of the course being based in a professional environment students are required to purchase a kit and uniform at an approximate cost of 150. BTEC Health and Social Care By choosing to study Health and Social Care you will experience an area of work that gives many varied opportunities for you to make a difference to people s lives in a positive way. At the same time you are gaining skills that can be transferred to other professions later. History Course information is the same as when taken as a Guidance Subject (p.5). Information Technology A GCSE in ICT opens up an incredible world of opportunities for work both in the technology industries and in supporting roles within other industries. Students will learn key skills such as web and animation development, sound and video editing, managing information in spreadsheets and databases. Mandarin Effective communication is the key to peace, prosperity and success. In today s world we have to interact on a global scale. Governments, industries and communities often have to converse in foreign languages and will need linguists. An understanding of a foreign language further develops communication skills. We believe that it is important for everyone to learn a language and experience the riches that other cultures have to offer. Media Studies Do you like music videos, soap operas and magazines? Ever wonder how global media companies grab and maintain your attention daily? Most people have been persuaded by the media in some way. Media Studies offers students the opportunity to analyse and produce their own media products using creative and technical skills. Music Making music is at the heart of GCSE music. Whether you re a drummer, sitar player, electric guitarist or violinist, there s something for you! The course is based around lots of performing and composing and broadening your horizons with music you might not have heard before. There s something for everyone and all styles are welcome!

BTEC Music Technology BTEC Music Technology is a great option for budding music producers, DJs and songwriters. You will use industry standard DJ and music production equipment and have access to a wellequipped recording studio. No previous musical experience is required; just a passion for music, technology and creativity! GCSE PE Ideal for students who are committed to taking part in sport and want to take an examination subject in PE. Theory lessons cover what happens and why when you start to exercise, and diet. In practical lessons you are assessed in 4 different sports, so we want students who will participate in extra-curricular sports. BTEC Performing Arts (Production) Are you interested in finding out about what happens behind the scenes in performances? Do you enjoy learning new skills through practical activities? This course focuses on technical and design skills required for a production. You will learn about setting up and operating stage lighting, mask making and various other design skills. Product Design Product Design is a multi-material course aimed at students who enjoy the many aspects of investigating, designing and making. Do you enjoy: hand drawing, using modern ICT and CAD CAM, creative thinking, experimental making and solving real problems that add value to people s lives? If so then Product Design is for you. Sociology Sociology is the study of society and aims to understand the behaviour of people in terms of age, gender, ethnicity and social class. It covers a wide range of topics such as the family, education, crime and deviance. It will make you question and see things in a creative way. Level 2 Sports Studies The Cambridge National in Sports Studies qualification allows students the opportunity to experience sport in a vocational context, learning about topics such as Sports Leadership, Developing Sports Skills, Current Issues in Sport and Sport and the Media. Students will cover four units of work with one of the units being assessed via a 1-hour examination paper. The other three units will be assessed through coursework and assignment tasks. Students will not be assessed directly by their level of performance in a particular sport or activity but by the knowledge and understanding they demonstrate in the examination and in the coursework tasks. Textiles Do you have a passion for fashion? Are you interested in developing your fashion illustration and design and making skills? Would you like to learn a range of fabric decoration and manipulation techniques? If the answer is yes, then textiles technology would be a great option for you to choose! 11

What s the Difference Between a BTEC/ OCR Cambridge National and a GCSE? GCSE subjects are mainly based on performance in exams, although there will often be some controlled assessments that count towards your final grade. Some GCSEs such as Design, Drama and ICT have quite large amounts of practical work. BTEC/OCR Cambridge National qualifications usually have a more practical focus, however, most courses now have an on-line exam or external assessment contributing to 25% of their overall grade. Students are also asked to submit assignments throughout the course which are marked at Beauchamp. Students need to have good organisational skills to keep meeting the deadlines set. 19 Post-16: Opportunities after your GCSEs It may seem early to be discussing possible post-16 pathways when you are still in the process of deciding on your options for Year 10, but students now need to stay in full time education or training until 18 years of age. So the decisions you make now will have an impact on the choices you make in the future. During Year 10 we will help you to consider the range of post-16 options and pathways open to you and you will be supported in applying for post-16 courses and training opportunities in Year 11. Level 3 Courses We want students who apply for courses at Beauchamp to follow a route to success that relates to their interests and abilities. For this reason all courses in Year 12 have entry requirements. These requirements are based on the demands of the courses and on the qualities which students need to meet these demands successfully. Typical requirements for A level and similar Level 3 courses are currently 6 GCSEs or equivalent BTEC at grade C or better including maths and English and representing at least 4 different courses. However, most courses have additional specific requirements which you can find, alongside our post-16 prospectus and course information, on our website (Student Services Post-16). The GCSE requirements to get on to Level 3 courses are the minimum needed to get onto university degree courses, though you need to be aware that for popular courses at popular universities the bar can be set considerably higher. To study medicine, for example, it is highly desirable to have at least 5 A*s at GCSE. Level 2 Courses We currently offer a limited range of level 2 courses for students who do not reach the required 6 C grades necessary for Level 3 study (A levels and BTEC Nationals). Students learn by completing projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. It introduces learners to particular areas of employment and provides a good basis to move on to a more advanced work-related qualification. Students choose three subjects to study alongside re-taking GCSE English and maths where required. To advance onto level 3 courses we require students to achieve a minimum of two Distinctions and a Merit in the each of the BTEC certificates. We also offer an NVQ Level 2 in Beauty and a VRQ Level 2 in Hairdressing. The courses are designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy and to prepare you for progression onto NVQ level 3 or for a position within a beauty or hair salon. They are one year full time courses which are assessed by a range of methods, including practical assessment, written tests and coursework. To access these courses in year 12 students need to have achieved at least 4 Ds at GCSE or BTEC equivalent, including a D at English Language. 15
