Chiropractic Courses Welcome to Chiropractic at the University of South Wales Chiropractic is a growing profession with many rewards. Chiropractic focuses on a manual, hands-on approach to treating the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects that disorders of this area may have on general health. In light of increasing demands for chiropractic services we were the first university in the UK to offer a fully integrated undergraduate degree that is accredited by the General Chiropractic Council (GCC). Our students benefit from opportunities such as clinical placement with the local health board, which improve their confidence and employability. You will enjoy state-of-the-art equipment in our purpose-built clinic at the Welsh Institute of Chiropractic (WIoC) on the Treforest campus. We have excellent working relationships with the chiropractic profession, and enjoy close links with the British Chiropractic Association and the Royal College of Chiropractors, as well as many other international chiropractic organisations, including the European Chiropractors Union and the World Federation of Chiropractic. Why choose chiropractic at the University of South Wales? Accreditations The integrated undergraduate Masters programme is accredited by both the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and European Council on Chiropractic Education (ECCE). This means that you are qualified to apply to register with the GCC, have the ability to work in European states and are eligible to sit entry examinations in most accredited areas worldwide. We advise all applicants to check in advance the legal status of any countries or states that may be of interest to them. First-Class Facilities The Welsh Institute of Chiropractic (WIoC) provides clinical training for final year student clinicians to meet the degree requirements. The WIoC contains 20 treatment rooms, a digital X-ray suite, MRI facilities and a functional rehabilitation suite to provide a stimulating learning environment for our students. At the University we have a number of first-class learning facilities on-site, including clinical simulation and a diagnostic ultrasound suite. Fully Integrated Programme Our chiropractic degree is the only programme in the UK that is fully integrated into the University infrastructure, offering students a wide educational experience. Student Activities Within the academic framework, students are encouraged to interact with members of the chiropractic profession. Most chiropractic associations within the UK offer student membership and a range of conferences. Our students are also invited to join the British Chiropractic Sports Council team to provide healthcare at various sporting events. We have our own Chiropractic Society supported by the University s Students Union. The Society has its own book club, a range of branded clothing and hosts many social events, including the annual Chiropractic Ball. The Chiropractic Society also holds regular meetings, with guest speakers from a diverse and interesting range of professional backgrounds. 2 University of South Wales

Pre-Chiropractic Foundation Year Prospective students who do not have the required basic science subjects, but who have demonstrated academic ability or qualifications in another field, may apply to enter the Pre-Chiropractic Foundation Year. This course is ideal for applicants who are making a career change or a transfer from another area of study. In addition, students who have studied science but do not have high enough marks to qualify for the degree are encouraged to apply to the Foundation programme as a route of entry to the MChiro degree programme. Modules: Foundation Biomechanics for Chiropractors Foundation Human Anatomy for Chiropractors Foundation Chemistry Foundation Human Physiology for Chiropractors Communication Skills and Contemporary Topics for Chiropractors Foundation Mathematics Therapeutic Massage Entry Requirements Entry requirements: Please contact the University to discuss your qualifications. The University accepts a wide range of qualifications from all over the world - country specific requirements can be found on our website: Potential candidates are invited for interview however, a telephone or Skype interview may be possible for students who are unable to travel from their home country to the UK. In addition, applicants are required to have participated in observation and discussion with a practising, registered chiropractor who holds an internationally-recognised chiropractic qualification, before they interview for the course. Potential students are required to undergo a police check from their home country to confirm that they don't have a criminal record and a Declaration of Health before entering the programme. The University of South Wales has a large campus with great student facilities. There are 24-hour computer labs, different study areas from silent to social, a well-stocked library with convenient opening times, and a drop-incentre to get some extra help with writing or mathematics/statistics. The Students Union also has a new building for socialising and partying, and there is a gym that also offers a number of courses and classes. Angelika Durrant, Germany, Graduate 3

Chiropractic Courses Master of Chiropractic (MChiro) About the Course Our four year, full-time integrated Master of Chiropractic (MChiro) degree is designed to equip you with an advanced knowledge of human structure and its relationship to general health. The course aims to produce caring and competent chiropractors who are capable of practising independently and safely. It develops imaginative, evaluative and responsive intellectual skills, and embraces a range of relevant theories, firmly linked to clinical practice. The award of Master of Chiropractic (MChiro) provides the scientific knowledge and basic clinical methodology required for pre-registration education and training. You will study and understand the human body in health and disease, identify abnormalities of human structure and function, together with the use of relevant supporting therapeutic interventions. You will develop a critical, analytical and evaluative approach to the principles and practice of chiropractic. The value of investigative skills to enhance and expand knowledge is stressed, and chiropractic is viewed in the context of other health-related professions. Entry Requirements and UCAS Information UCAS code: B320 UCAS tariff: 320 points (eg. ABB at A-level, to exclude General Studies). A-levels must include Biology and normally Chemistry. Five GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English Language are also required. The University accepts a wide range of qualifications from all over the world - country specific requirements can be found on our website: Potential candidates are invited for interview however, a telephone or Skype interview may be possible for students who are unable to travel to the UK. Applicants are required to have participated in observation and discussion with a practising, registered chiropractor who holds an internationally-recognised chiropractic qualification, before they interview for the course. Potential students are required to undergo a police check from their home country to confirm that they don't have a criminal record and a Declaration of Health before entering the programme. The lecturers at the University are of a high standard, very knowledgeable and experienced, making it enjoyable to learn. The modules are interesting and very varied. A high percentage of the classes are practical based, giving you the opportunity to incorporate what you have learnt. This provides me with opportunities to get hands-on experience to adequately prepare me for my final year. Oda Pedersen, Norway, Fourth Year student 4 University of South Wales

Career Opportunities Chiropractic is a growing, independent, primary healthcare profession and our course boasts an excellent employment rate. Some graduates take advantage of opportunities for employment in established practices and some prefer to be independent practitioners. There is also the opportunity to apply for registration and work in other countries. The University of South Wales is accredited by the European Council on Chiropractic Education (ECCE), which facilitates applications for registration to practise in other countries around the world. 5

Chiropractic Courses Chiropractic at the University of South Wales Clinical Training The clinical experience you have in training is of major importance. For this reason, aspects of clinical work are introduced from the start and are carefully integrated with the academic subjects studied. Clinical modules are presented within a multidisciplinary framework, including behavioural scientists, medical practitioners, radiologists, radiographers, external chiropractors, nurses and nutritionists. There is a continuous development in clinical expertise throughout the programme, which culminates in student clinicians providing chiropractic care, under supervision, in the Institute s outpatient clinic. At the end of the third year, you are required to attend the outpatient clinic during the summer until the end of the fourth year of the programme. The Clinic The Institute offers clinical chiropractic healthcare services to the community, which are provided by our students. The clinic is fully computerised and uses the latest equipment to provide chiropractic treatment. The student work room has been developed to support fourth-year training. Wi-Fi is available throughout the University and in the clinic. Treatment facilities include 20 treatment rooms, a digital X-ray suite, a rehabilitation suite, specialist skills laboratory and seminar room. The clinic aims to provide the highest standard of chiropractic healthcare from its student clinicians and qualified chiropractors. Chiropractic healthcare services are provided by student clinicians, fully supervised by qualified chiropractors who are registered by the statutory body, the General Chiropractic Council. This ensures that the training received and the treatment given meet the high standards demanded by legislation. 6 Hospital Placement Programme As part of the overall clinical training, final year student clinicians participate in an observational programme at a number of local hospitals. Students attend clinical rounds, view live surgical procedures, and attend lectures by consultants. This innovative programme for chiropractic students is the first of its kind in the UK, and provides students with additional experience of working with other healthcare professionals in an integrated way. Teaching Facilities The Welsh Institute of Chiropractic has registered chiropractors who supervise the training of student clinicians in our facilities. Facilities include a modern lecture theatre with the latest technology to support innovative teaching practice. We have a viewing window, where students can observe demonstrations and evaluations taking place in our skills laboratory. There are also rooms to aid the instruction of students during their pre-clinical training. All clinical teaching rooms are fitted with advanced audio-visual equipment to enhance the learning experience. Professional Contract for Chiropractic Students The MChiro has regulations specific to the professional and clinical nature of the programme. These regulations are in addition to those adhered to by all students at the University. A contract has been introduced specifying the terms under which the University will provide a programme of education and training, meeting the requirements of the GCC and the University of South Wales. The contract is designed to reflect the demands of the regulations and the professional behaviours associated with them. University of South Wales
