Leadership Profile Dean of Communications This search is being assisted by:

California State University, Fullerton (Cal State Fullerton) requests applications and nominations for a Dean of Communications to join the university s senior administrative team. We invite candidates who are strong academic leaders, committed to academic excellence and studentcentered-learning. Candidates need to have demonstrated appreciation for the academic and professional values of the College and have demonstrated capabilities in developing and sustaining the strategic direction of the College and its departments. Preferably, this person will join the university in spring 2016. The Position: Under the direction of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean of Communications will serve as the chief administrative officer for the College. In addition to providing leadership for the College, the Dean will serve on the President s Advisory Board and be a member of the Council of Deans. The Dean will provide vision and leadership for the College, be responsible for advocating for the diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body, and protect and expand the collaborative environment of the College. The Dean s primary responsibilities will include the following: Providing strong, consistent, and fair leadership. Creating and sustaining an environment supportive of research, scholarship, and creative activity. Leading the College s fundraising and grant-seeking efforts. Shaping a vision for the College that is consistent with the University s strategic plan and the ongoing strategic planning within the College. Increasing the College s visibility in academic and professional communities nationally and internationally. Providing oversight of the College s instructional programs including leadership in curriculum improvement, innovation, and assessment of student learning. Leading the College's response to partnership opportunities with diverse communities seeking to integrate talented non-traditional students into mainstream educational venues. Planning and administering the annual budgeting process and the budget for the College. 2

Assuming the responsibility for the supervision of the College s support staff and personnel. Enhancing the College s work with ethnically and culturally diverse students, faculty, and staff. Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. or other appropriate terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution in a discipline appropriate to the position as a Dean of the College of Communications. A record of teaching and research excellence and/or experience equivalent to that of a full professor. A minimum of three years of collaborative academic administrative experience in strategic and operational planning, budgeting, and human resource management. A record of successful leadership in curriculum design, program assessment, faculty development, and student advisement. A demonstrated understanding of the range of disciplines offered in the College. Desired Qualifications: Excellent listening, oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. A demonstrated record of success and a strong network in fundraising and partnership development. An active portfolio of professional affiliations and connections appropriate to the College. A proven record of advocacy for academic personnel and programs. The College: The College of Communications is committed to fostering academic excellence among its faculty and preparing its students for a variety of communication professions and academic opportunities. The College has 72 full-time faculty members serving a student population of approximately 3,900 majors from within three departments: The Department of Communications, Department of Human Communication Studies, and Department of Radio-TV-Film. Together, these three departments offer an important blend of theoretical and applied directions for an array of communications fields and industries. All three departments offer both bachelor s and master s degrees. 3

The Department of Communications produces workforce-ready graduates in advertising, public relations, journalism, entertainment and tourism communications, and photo communications. The Department is home to the Daily Titan student newspaper, a student-run advertising and public relations agency, and for three decades has produced Communications Week, a studentrun week of engagement with industry professionals and alumni. The Department of Communications is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. The Public Relations concentration holds Certification in Education for Public Relations (CEPR) from the Public Relations Society of America. The Department of Human Communication Studies prepares students for a number of professions through programs in argumentation and persuasion, intercultural, interpersonal or organizational communication, and speech-language pathology. The department is also home to a nationallyranked debate squad and is closely affiliated with a National Student Speech Language Hearing Association gold medal chapter. The Communicative Disorders program in the Department of Human Communication Studies is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The Department of Radio-TV-Film offers academic focus in critical studies, industry studies, production or writing, and other aspects of the cinematic arts. The Department recently established an MFA in screenwriting, targeting working professionals who seek training in screenwriting for film, television, and interactive media. The University: Founded in 1957 by an act of the California Legislature, Cal State Fullerton is a comprehensive, regional university with a global outlook and one of five universities in the country to be cited by The Education Trust for its balance of quality, accessibility, and price. Located in Fullerton, a community of approximately 150,000 people 30 miles Southeast of Los Angeles, Cal State Fullerton enrolled 38,128 students fall 2014. The majority of these students are from Orange County, but student composition also includes approximately 3,000 international students from 81 nations. Classes are offered on the main campus, the Cal State Fullerton Irvine Campus, and online. In addition, University Extended Education offers extension courses throughout the year. 4

With an overall current budget of $481.2 million, the University offers 55 undergraduate degrees and 54 graduate degrees, including doctorates in Education as well as Nursing. Cal State Fullerton is also home to the state s largest accredited business college. There are eight colleges, and 2,151 full- and part-time faculty members. Hispanic Outlook ranks Cal State Fullerton No. 1 in California and 4 th in the nation in awarding bachelor s degrees to Hispanics. The CSU 2010 study Working for California: The Impact of the California State University System notes that Cal State Fullerton generates $1 billion in economic activity annually, sustains more than 8,700 jobs in the region and generates more than $65 million per year in state tax revenue.
