Leadership Statement Dean College of Design, Construction and Planning Opportunity The University of Florida seeks candidates for the position of Dean of the College of Design, Construction and Planning. Applicants should be innovative, entrepreneurial and be able to effectively articulate the mission of the college to University administrators, the college s alumni, faculty, students and friends. The Dean is expected to continue the college s ascent toward academic and professional excellence, successfully contributing to the University s mission of becoming a top 10 public university. The Dean is expected to lead the college toward preeminence by successfully participating in the University of Florida s preeminence faculty hiring program, working with faculty, researchers, students and staff to create a vision that will strategically advance the college s national and international preeminence. UF Preeminence is the University's effort to become an international leader in more than two dozen areas, including health, agriculture, computing and education. Fueling UF's drive to solve the world's most pressing problems is an $800 million private fundraising initiative and a $100 million commitment from the Florida Legislature. UF was designated a preeminent state university in 2013 and embarked upon a recruitment plan to hire renowned faculty who are joining existing faculty to improve lives around the world.
The University of Florida The University of Florida is a major, public, comprehensive, land-grant, research university. Founded in 1853, UF is the state s oldest university and is among the nation s most academically diverse public universities. Today, UF has more than 50,000 students, one of the largest universities in the country. More than 100 undergraduate majors are offered in 16 colleges. UF has a long history of established excellence and is one of only 17 public, land-grant universities that belongs to the prestigious Association of American Universities. UF has a 2,000-acre campus and more than 900 buildings (including 170 with classrooms and laboratories). The northeast corner of campus is listed as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. UF s extensive capital improvement program has resulted in facilities ideal for 21st century academics and research. Design, Construction and Planning Overview The College of Design, Construction and Planning is home to the Schools of Architecture, Construction Management, and Landscape Architecture and Planning as well as the Department of Interior Design. The college also has interdisciplinary programs in Historic Preservation, Sustainability and the Built Environment, and an interdisciplinary Doctoral Degree Program. The college is relatively unique given it has under one administrative umbrella virtually all of the programs that deal with issues related to creating, maintaining and revitalizing the built and natural environments. The breadth of the college expertise has contributed to the collaborative nature of our faculty both in the college and across disciplines at the University of Florida. Established in 1925, DCP has become one of the largest colleges of design, construction and planning in the country. The Fall 2015 enrollment of 1,300 students includes approximately 800 undergraduates and 500 graduate students. The College employs approximately 125 academic,
research, administrative support and other staff, which includes 54 tenured or tenure-track faculty members. DCP Degree Programs Bachelor s Degrees Offered: Architecture Construction Management Interior Design Master s Degrees Offered on the UF campus: Architecture Construction Management Historic Preservation Landscape Architecture Sustainability and the Built Environment Interior Design Landscape Architecture Urban and Regional Planning College-wide, Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program Concentrations: Construction Management Landscape Architecture Interior Design Urban and Regional Planning Architectural Design and Technology Off-Campus Master s Programs: Architecture at CityLab-Orlando Architecture at CityLab-Sarasota Online Degree Programs: Bachelor in Fire and Emergency Services Master in Fire and Emergency Sciences Master in International Construction Management Master in Sustainable Design Master in Urban and Regional Planning School of Architecture The UF School of Architecture (SoA) is the oldest and largest professional school of architecture in the state and is known for producing thoughtful and capable graduates who are well prepared to enter the profession. Founded in 1925 as a fouryear program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Architecture under the leadership of Rudolph Weaver, the inaugural class included 34 students. Today, the program has 500 students and 22 tenure/tenure-track faculty. The School of Architecture supports a robust culture of learning through making at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In the School s most recent accreditation visit in 2013, the Master of Architecture professional degree program was granted an eight-year term of accreditation, the maximum duration possible, with four distinctions in areas covering architectural technology and design, reflecting
favorably on the quality of the program. The UF School of Architecture is also known for a rigorous and coordinated design studio curriculum and strong architectural technology culture that include substantial national and international academic collaborations. Students and faculty from SoA are frequently honored with prestigious awards for design and academic competitions. Research activities at the School of Architecture are devoted to providing creative scholarship and advanced investigations in the various technical disciplines to enhance and enrich of the built environment. These are exhibited through numerous books and journal publications by faculty and students. Rinker School of Construction Management The M.E. Rinker, Sr. School of Construction Management consists of 20 full-time faculty members and approximately 13 staff. The Rinker School was founded in 1935 as a program within the Department of Architecture. It was the first academic program in the country to offer a master s degree in building construction (1948), was the first accredited construction program in the U.S. (1975), and was designated a school in As the oldest and one of the largest construction schools, the school is housed in a 47,000 square foot state-of-the-art LEED Gold certified facility. The Rinker School has an effective and mutually beneficial relationship with industry that supports the mission of the school. Through the generosity of its alumni and friends, the Rinker School has established several endowments with a current value of $30 million that include fellowships and scholarships, named professorships, and awards for research. Students and faculty from the Rinker School are frequently honored with prestigious awards for academic competitions, teaching, service and research. The faculty are acknowledged leaders in construction safety, affordable housing, sustainable construction, construction information technologies, and alternative materials and construction methods. The school has an active research program, with research centers in construction information systems, sustainable construction, construction safety and housing studies. School of Landscape Architecture and Planning Established in 2009, the school structure formalizes synergies in research, teaching and service, allowing the accredited professional programs in landscape architecture and urban and regional planning to be sustained and enhanced, while also maintaining two distinctive department identities. The School of Landscape Architecture and Planning (SLA&P) promotes collaborative teaching, research and service. Built on a tradition of more than 80 years (landscape architecture) and 40 years (urban and regional planning), our faculty have crafted some of the most innovative land use legislation in the state and nation, and our alumni have established design practices that have innovated internationally and nationally for decades.
The 19 faculty members in SLA&P are leading at both international and national levels, conducting approximately $5 million in active research, applying new teaching methodologies via our online planning program, and engaging with communities via our nationally recognized interdisciplinary studios. Programs in Asia and South America attract students from within UF and beyond to learn about innovative practices in landscape architecture and planning in an international context. Our Fulbright Fellows have conducted research in India and Southeast Asia. Interdisciplinary studios consistently secure highly competitive awards at the national and state levels, crossing boundaries between Landscape Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, Engineering and Fine Arts. Department of Interior Design The UF Department of Interior Design, established in 1948, offers students a way to express individual creativity while bettering the quality of life for individuals, families, communities and organizations. Incoming students complete a common core of foundation architecture studios and interior design support courses before being reviewed in a selective admissions process after the sophomore year to begin the upper division studio sequence in specific market sectors (e.g., corporate, retail, healthcare and hospitality design). Studio projects vary from semester to semester and originate from campus and community opportunities, collaborations with design practice partners or align with student competitions involving primary and secondary research. The majority of graduates from the program join commercial interior design or multidisciplinary design firms and others pursue master s and doctoral degrees. Evidence of the department s leadership is exhibited through research and creative scholarship of its faculty and graduate students. In addition, both the master s and bachelor s programs have been ranked in the top ten by DesignIntelligence.
Interdisciplinary Programs in the College of Design, Construction and Planning The College of Design, Construction and Planning has 3 interdisciplinary programs: PhD, Sustainability and the Built Environment and Historic Preservation. The faculty who teach in these programs come from all academic units in the College, and each has a committee that oversees curriculum, admissions and general administration. The college s Doctoral Program offers a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary study and research. The Historic Preservation Program is dedicated to educating and training the next generation of historic preservation leaders through teaching, research and service. One of the first historic preservation programs in the country, it was founded in 1957 on the principles of fostering a service-learning approach and addressing the critical and emerging issues of heritage stewardship globally. In 1972, the program launched the Preservation Institute Nantucket (PIN) a University of Florida summer program that provides students hands-on training in conserving heritage resources. PIN is the nation s oldest field school for historic preservation. The Sustainability and the Built Environment program is dedicated to developing leaders to work in all areas of the built environment that aggressively pursue sustainable solutions including strategies for energy efficiency, renewable fuels, protection of water quantity and quality, efficient use of land, sustainable agricultural practices, efficient waste management and transportation solutions that reduce carbon emissions and improve human health. The Bachelor of Science in Sustainability and the Built Environment is an interdisciplinary degree overseen by a faculty committee representing all the academic units in the College of Design, Construction and Planning. The first degree of its kind in the country, the first students were admitted in fall Since then, the program has grown to over 100 majors and 40 minors.
