QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY Quinnipiac University is a private university with 6,200 undergraduate and 2,300 graduate students. Consistently ranked among the best universities by U.S. News & World Report, Quinnipiac (pronounced KWIN-uh-pe-ack) offers 53 undergraduate majors and 20 graduate programs plus the JD program and the new School of Medicine. We have approximately 350 full-time faculty members. Quinnipiac is located in the heart of Connecticut, about 90 minutes from New York City and two hours from Boston. The University's Mount Carmel Campus, resting in the shadow of Sleeping Giant Mountain in Hamden, Connecticut, is an architectural gallery of modern brick buildings and sweeping lawns, with a soaring clock tower above the library. This campus is home to most of our residence halls, academic buildings, University offices and athletic fields. Our York Hill Campus, located just 1/2 mile away, is home to the TD Bank Sports Center, the Rocky Top Student Center and our newest residence halls. The School of Health Sciences, the School of Nursing and the School of Education are located on our North Haven Campus. This campus is also home to the School of Medicine and will eventually house most of our graduate programs, including the School of Law. Quinnipiac University is an exceptional place to work; from its strong sense of community spirit at the University and School levels - to the rich resources, beautiful campuses and facilities, it is a very welcoming, interdisciplinary environment. Accreditation The University is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (School of Business), the American Bar Association (School of Law), the National Council for Accreditation for Teacher Education (School of Education) and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (School of Nursing). SCHOOL OF NURSING 1 The School of Nursing, founded as a department in 1970 and newly designated as a school in 2011, serves a rapidly growing population of 700 graduate and undergraduate students. The School has earned an excellent reputation in the northeastern region and is one of the few schools in the country with both undergraduate and graduate programs endorsed by the American Holistic Nursing Association. At the School of Nursing, learning occurs in a highly personalized, student-centered community that promotes academic excellence. We view nursing as both a science and an art that is holistic, goaldirected, research-based and concerned with the health and dignity of the whole person. As a newly designated School, our dynamic faculty is forging partnerships that offer 1 For more information about the School of Nursing see -3-
cutting-edge opportunities for collaboration and programming that will position us for national recognition. Our vision is to become a national model for inter-professional educational excellence that uniquely prepares graduates for the challenges of today's healthcare system. The new School of Nursing is housed in an 180,000-square-foot wireless facility with $3.5 million in cutting-edge equipment, which it shares with the School of Health Sciences. The facility, located on our North Haven Campus, features private and spacious faculty offices, 24 teaching laboratories, including an orthopedics lab, a rehabilitative sciences lab, a clinical skills lab, an intensive care unit, a health assessment lab, a physical exam suite, a physical diagnostics lab, a motion analysis lab and other special amenities that set it apart from other universities. Additionally, construction is underway in a building adjacent to and connected to the School of Nursing. This new building is scheduled for occupancy in summer 2013 and will include: An operating room suite with two additional high fidelity simulation rooms. 48 pro-section stations. 16 standardized patient rooms. Multiple team study rooms. Student lounge, rooftop cafe and vending area. Expanded health sciences library, 350-seat auditorium. 17 classrooms and 10 seminar rooms, with seating capacities ranging from 12 to 150 students. Nursing Academic Programs UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS The School of Nursing offers a traditional bachelor of science in nursing and an accelerated BSN for second-degree students. The undergraduate nursing curriculum, which utilizes a holistic framework, fosters professional socialization for future roles and responsibilities within the profession and emphasizes inter-professional learning and care delivery. Graduates are prepared as generalists to provide evidence-based care. Bachelor's degree nursing education prepares the graduate for entry into professional nursing practice and provides the foundation for graduate study. The undergraduate nursing program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, and has applied for accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Quinnipiac's undergraduate nursing program is also endorsed by the American Holistic Nurses' Certification Corporation. -4-
Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program The goal of the Quinnipiac undergraduate nursing program is to provide graduates with a broad and basic preparation for professional nursing practice. The undergraduate nursing curriculum fosters professional socialization for future roles and responsibilities within the profession. Graduates are prepared as generalists to provide evidence-based care. The School of Nursing prepares nursing students for entry-level professional nursing practice as skilled providers of holistic care for families and individuals of all ages and diverse cultural backgrounds. Because nursing involves a wide range of responsibilities caring for patients across their life spans, the program utilizes a holistic framework throughout the curriculum. Quinnipiac's bachelor's degree in nursing offers theoretical and clinical education as well as preparation for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN ). Quinnipiac's Schools of Nursing, Health Science and Medicine have formal partnerships with St. Vincent s Medical Center, Middlesex Hospital and Midstate Medical Center. In addition, strong affiliations with other health care providers allow students to complete clinical work at institutions across Connecticut, such as Yale-New Haven Hospital, Hartford Hospital, and Children s Hospital, as well as in private practices, outpatient clinics and community health centers. Graduates of the bachelor s degree program are well prepared for graduate study in nursing and may apply to Quinnipiac s Master s program or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program as early as spring semester of senior year. Accelerated BSN for Second Degree Students The accelerated BSN track is designed for individuals with a bachelor's degree in another discipline interested in pursuing nursing as a second bachelor's degree. The curriculum builds on the individual's prior educational preparation and the degree is completed in one calendar year, starting in August, with students concentrating solely on nursing courses. Accelerated BSN students begin the 12-month program in a traditional junior year from August to May and complete the remainder of the nursing major requirements in a 15- week intensive summer session, May to August. The accelerated BSN must be pursued on a full-time basis. Graduates earn a BSN degree and are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN and qualify for entry-level nursing positions or graduate study. -5-
MASTER S PROGRAM An education at Quinnipiac embodies the University's commitment to three core values: high-quality academic programs, a student-centered environment and a strong sense of community. Learning occurs in a highly personalized, student-centered community, which promotes academic excellence. Graduate nursing education broadens the scope of practice and provides for the acquisition of expertise in an area of specialization. Students prepare for leadership roles in advanced specialty practice, nursing leadership and organizational management. The nursing faculty welcomes a diversity of ideas, persons and cultures and supports students to advance their nursing education. The program promotes holistic nursing approaches, professional collaboration and ethical scholarship in an exciting environment dedicated to learning. The master s program offers two uniquely focused tracks. Nurse Practitioner Tracks Students who have earned their bachelor's degree may elect to pursue preparation as an advanced practice nurse in one of two specialty areas, including: Adult-Gerontological Nurse Practitioner Track Family Nurse Practitioner Track Students who are seeking to become an advanced practice nurse in adult-gerontological or family care are eligible to enter the program if they are registered nurses with a bachelor's (or higher degree) in nursing or a related field. Full-time students enrolled in the Adult-Gerontological Track or the Family Nurse Practitioner Track can complete the degree requirements for a Master of Science in nursing degree in two years. The full-time curriculum, including the clinical component, takes place two days each week over the two calendar years and allows for part-time work. Three-Year Option Students who are new to nursing or those who wish to begin their education at a more relaxed pace can choose a three-year option, which allows for part-time study for the first two years. This three-year curriculum, including clinical experience, occurs one day a week for the first two years and then two days a week over the final year. This track allows for full-time work in the first two years of the program and part-time work in the final year. -6-
DOCTORAL PROGRAM Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP): Adult-Geronotological Track and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP): Family Care Track Students who have an RN license and who hold a baccalaureate can enroll in the post- BSN DNP in either the Adult-Geronotology Track or the Family Care Track. Full-time students in these tracks can complete the degree requirements for the DNP in three years, with a two-day per week commitment to classroom and clinical education. Students who are newer to nursing or who wish to pursue studies at a more relaxed pace may select the part-time option, designed to be completed in four years. Part-time students have a oneday per week classroom commitment for the first two years, and a two-day per week commitment to classroom and clinical education for the final two years. Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP): Care of Populations Track Students who have earned a master s degree in nursing or a related field can enroll in the post-master s DNP track, thereby gaining an opportunity to advance career goals more rapidly. For post-master's students the Care of Populations track provides educational preparation for leadership positions or community focused care in a broad range of settings. Students may complete the program full-time in two years or part-time in three years. Upon admission, students are assigned a full-time faculty adviser, who meets with them for academic and scholarly advising over the course of the program. All students in the DNP program engage in scholarly inquiry through a variety of projects that are embedded in core and specialty courses throughout the program. The completed projects are collected in a capstone portfolio and, in the final semester, students reflect on how the projects have helped them achieve the overall program objectives. Nursing Faculty Profile The current School of Nursing faculty profile by rank is: Full-time tenured, tenure-track and non-tenure track: 21 Part-time lecturers and clinical faculty: 64 Nursing Student Profile Current School of Nursing student enrollments are approximately: Undergraduate Program: ~550 Graduate Program: ~150-7-
