THE SEARCH The University of Central Florida (UCF) College of Nursing is seeking applications nominations and inquiries for the position of Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs. The Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs leads the undergraduate nursing programs including the traditional BSN program, the accelerated BSN program, the RN to BSN program and concurrent ASN-BSN programs on all campus sites and provides other functions as designated by the Dean of the College. The Associate Dean is a line position directly accountable to the Dean. Educating nurses since 1979, the UCF College of Nursing grew quickly from a small department to a school, and in 2007 was elevated to college status with full accreditation under the leadership of founding Dean Jean D Meza Leuner, Ph.D., RN, CNE, FAAN. The College offers quality academic programs (B.S.N., M.S.N., D.N.P., Ph.D.) with several online tracks and regional locations, growing nursing research and scholarship opportunities, and a long-standing commitment to clinical excellence and community service. The College s graduate program is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation s outstanding nursing programs. UCF s nursing students are highly sought after by employers for their demonstrated academic excellence scoring well above the national and state averages on nursing board certification and licensure exams. Many of the College s faculty members hold doctoral degrees and several are also fellows in the American Academy of Nursing, American Academy of Critical Care Medicine, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and National Academies of Practice. The College is well respected both University-wide and in the community for its collegial and collaborative faculty. 1
2 Rank and compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a 12-month full-time appointment. RESPONSIBILITIES Specific responsibilities for the position of Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs in the College of Nursing include: Primary Responsibilities: Provide leadership for all curriculum review, development and implementation. Provide recommendations to the College s leadership team regarding strategic program growth, direction and organization for all undergraduate programs and initiatives. Support and develop faculty in their scholarly endeavors and professional development trajectory for promotion and tenure. Mentor and support faculty who are involved in undergraduate program activities. Lead Curriculum Committee review of all undergraduate course evaluations and makes recommendations for improvement. Work closely with program and campus coordinators to ensure excellence in undergraduate education. Provide guidance and oversight for the Undergraduate Admissions, Progression and Graduation Committees. Hire adjunct faculty members. Conduct annual evaluations of all regular and adjunct faculty. Conduct cumulative progress evaluations for all tenure-earning faculty. Prepare the class schedule and faculty assignments each semester. Oversee the Honors in the Major program for Nursing. Ensure that all accreditation standards are met and maintained and the requirements mandated by the Board of Nursing are met. Oversee the College s Institutional Effectiveness process and Program Review for undergraduate programs. Oversee evaluation plan activities related to the undergraduate programs. Serve as a liaison to foster positive relationships with community clinical facilities and development of new clinical sites. Foster a positive work environment and maintains open communication for students and faculty members. Serve on committees in the college and the university as required. Advocate for students and faculty. Active in grant writing and maintains own record of scholarly activities. Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean. 2
3 QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and professional experience. Minimum Qualifications Master s degree in nursing, and doctorate in nursing or a related field, each from an accredited institution. Currently holds tenure or is eligible for tenure at the associate or full professor level. Eligible for licensure as a registered nurse in Florida. Five to seven years of experience in academic nursing education with increasing administrative responsibilities. Demonstrated leadership abilities and commitment to the profession. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Preferred Qualifications Experience with accreditation process. Course work at the graduate level in curriculum development and implementation. Varied teaching/clinical experiences in a BSN curriculum. Experience managing groups of personnel, including interviewing and hiring, and evaluating and counseling. The holder of the Chair will play a prominent role in the development of a future high-tech simulation center and in creating and implementing short- and longrange plans for growing the simulation program and expanding inter-professional education and research opportunities across disciplines. THE COLLEGE OF NURSING The College of Nursing is one of 12 colleges at the University of Central Florida. Educating nurses since 1979, the college offers a bachelor s degree program, master s degree program and two doctorate degree programs. The College is located adjacent to UCF s main campus in a university-owned building in Central Florida Research Park. Occupying three floors of University Tower, the new facility features modern offices and classrooms, a student learning center, computer labs, two break rooms with full kitchens, and several teaching labs for simulation and skill-building. History The nursing program at UCF began in 1978 with an authorization from the State of Florida Board of Regents (BOR) and the Florida Board of Nursing to initiate a baccalaureate nursing program. The first class was admitted in 1979 to the Department of Nursing. Nursing transitioned to a School within the College of Health & Public Affairs in Nursing program offerings flourished and approval was granted to the School of Nursing to offer an RN to BSN program in Orlando, Cocoa and Daytona. A second degree accelerated BSN option for non-nurse college graduates began in May Other Significant Dates: In 1992, the BOR approved planning for the master's program, and in 1995 the MSN program started. The MSN program now includes tracks for Adult, Family & Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Nursing Leadership & Management, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Clinical Nurse Leader and Nurse Educator. In 1997, web-based RN to BSN courses were developed and the state's first RN to MSN program option was initiated. From , the School of Nursing expanded the basic BSN program to Cocoa and began offering the state's first fully web-based RN to BSN program. 6
7 In 1999, graduate certificate options were offered in Nursing and Health Professional Education, and Post-MSN Nurse Practitioner. In 2006, an undergraduate baccalaureate program was started on the Daytona campus. The PhD in Nursing program commenced in The program has three areas of focus: vulnerable populations, application of innovative technologies to nursing education and clinical care, and healthcare systems and policy. The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program began in On July 1, 2007, the School of Nursing became a College of Nursing. This change in status reflected the growth and depth of the educational programs, research and caliber of students attracted to UCF. UCF was one of the first universities in Florida to obtain CCNE accreditation of a D.N.P. program. The Florida Board of Nursing has approved the bachelor s degree in nursing program. UCF College of Nursing is a member of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). The AACN, the national voice for baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs, recognizes the B.S.N. degree as the minimum educational requirement for professional nursing practice. All of the College s academic programs are accredited by the Commission on Colleges, Southern Association of Colleges & Schools (SACS).
