Lewis School of Nursing Georgia State University, Atlanta THE SEARCH Georgia State University, a leading public research university, located in downtown Atlanta invites applications and nominations for the first Dean of the Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing. Effective July 1, 2011, the Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing will be elevated to an independent academic unit reporting to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. Established in 1966, the School employs approximately 35 full-time and 20 part-time faculty members; and offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and PhD degrees, as well as post-doctoral training, with total enrollment of approximately 500 students. The School is at the forefront in using cuttingedge technology and innovative approaches to offering degree programs. The Parker H. Petit Science Center, recently named one of the best new facilities by Southeast Construction magazine, houses the School s state-of-the-art nursing clinical simulation laboratories and classrooms. The School has access to over 200 clinical agencies, including major hospitals. The School is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and is approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing. The Dean should be an accomplished administrator, energetic individual, with a history of decisive and innovative leadership, who will advance the School s commitment to increasing research and scholarship and providing continued high quality nursing education. 2 QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate for the position of Dean of the Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing will possess qualifications and professional experience, including: A nursing leader of national prominence with the requisite experience in teaching, research and community service to address the challenges facing nursing education and provide the leadership and vision needed to achieve the School s priorities and goals. Advanced degree in nursing. Earned research doctorate (PhD or equivalent) in nursing or a related discipline. Demonstrated scholarly distinction appropriate for tenured appointment at the rank of professor. Significant experience in nursing education and a distinguished record of funded research and scholarly achievement. Commitment to expanding and diversifying revenue sources, including private and public funding. Demonstrated successful leadership/administrative abilities. Commitment to recruiting and developing a diverse and talented faculty. Dedication to the educational goals of a diverse and highly-qualified student body. Experience in developing, organizing and developing budgets. An effective communicator. Demonstrated skill in leadership, management and supervision of personnel. Experience in curriculum review, staffing and scheduling. Ability to represent the School in the regional, state, national and international nursing communities. Demonstrated ability to develop strong, collaborative relationships with other disciplines, foster inter-disciplinary research and scholarship. Commitment to developing the health professions workforce. Experience developing international partnerships. Eligibility for RN licensure in Georgia. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION Responsibilities of the Dean of the Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing include: Serving as leader, administrator and evaluator of the School s academic programs and offerings. Supervising and evaluating School personnel including faculty, staff and contractors. Developing and administering budgets for the School, coordinating with finance executives of the University. Serving as liaison between the School s programs and the University, the surrounding community and community agencies, schools, advisory committees, state and national groups. Managing day-to-day operations, academic programs, financial management, personnel management and scholarship/research of the School. Being administratively responsible for the School of Health Professions (SHP) which includes the Divisions of Nutrition, Respiratory Therapy and Physical Therapy and having the Director of SHP as a direct report. Mentoring faculty in professional advancement activities. -2-
3 Recruiting and retaining key teaching, clinical and research faculty. Representing the School within the University and the community. Collaboratively working with faculty, other Deans, persons with administrative responsibilities throughout the University and community. Interpreting trends in nursing practice, nursing education and health care to University constituents Garnering resources for the School including fundraising. Serving as a liaison and advocate between the University and the School. Students Total student enrollment at Georgia State University for fall 2010 was 31,538. Of this total, 23,486 are undergraduate students and 8,052 graduate students. Sixty percent of the student body is female and forty percent is male; 46% of the student body is white, 33% black, 12% Asian, and less than 1% American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, 3% are two or more races, and almost 5% are unreported. -3-
4 Faculty Georgia State University has 1,103 full-time faculty members who are committed to teaching, research/creative activity and service with approximately 70.7% being tenured or tenure track. The vast majority hold terminal degrees. The faculty are strongly committed to and involved in the University s system of shared governance. Accreditation Georgia State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools 1 (SACS-COC) to award bachelors, masters, educational specialist and doctoral degrees. Current accreditation is through THE BYRDINE F. LEWIS SCHOOL OF NURSING 2 The mission of the Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing at Georgia State University is to create a premier multicultural learning community that produces leaders, clinicians, scholars and researchers who exemplify nursing excellence and enhance health care delivery in Georgia and beyond. The School was originally established as a Department of Nursing. The Georgia Board of Regents approved the Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1966, the Master s degree in Nursing in 1973, and the PhD in Nursing in On July 1, 2011 the School will become an independent academic unit. The School contributes to the University through its high quality programs in nursing. Undergraduate Program The undergraduate program is designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill the role of a beginning professional nurse. Graduates are eligible to take the national licensure Approximately 150 students are admitted into the Undergraduate Program each year. Admissions are divided between fall and spring terms. In fall 2010 there were 296 undergraduate students enrolled in nursing courses; 117 students were graduated from the program during the academic year. BS with a major in Nursing Degree programs prepare students for the examination to become a professional Registered Nurse (RN) and equip them to work in a variety of care setting: home/community through high acuity. Traditional Bachelor of Science The traditional program enrolls undergraduate students who seek a B.S. with a major in nursing and is generally completed in 6 academic terms. ACE Bachelor of Science The ACE (Achieving the Curriculum Expeditiously) program enrolls students who have completed all undergraduate core course requirements and who want a fast-paced, full-time, rigorous program of study. The ACE program is generally completed in 4 consecutive terms. 1 See 2 For more information on the School see -4-
5 Graduate Programs Master of Science with a Major in Nursing The master's program is designed to prepare Registered Professional Nurses (RN) to assume a variety of advanced practice roles. The program focuses on the preparation of clinical experts with advanced clinical competencies and emphasizes excellence in clinical skill, critical decision making, inquiry, leadership, self-awareness and empowerment. The Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing offers several areas of specialty leading to the Clinical Nurse Specialist or Nurse Practitioner credential. Graduates from the Nursing Leadership in Healthcare Innovations track may be eligible for certification in Nursing Informatics or Nursing Administration (American Nursing Credentialing Center certification) if the specified course work is completed. The program of study is offered in a web-enhanced format that includes onsite and synchronous/ asynchronous classes, individually directed learning and applied clinical practice. Graduates are eligible to take nationally approved advanced certification examinations in each of the specified areas of clinical practice (CNS and NP). In fall 2010 there were a total of 234 students (60 full time, 174 part time) enrolled in the various graduate tacks; in the academic year , 42 students completed their masters degree in nursing. Specialty Areas of Study Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist/Nurse Practitioner Program Child Health Clinical Nurse Specialist/Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Family Nurse Practitioner Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist/Women s Health Nurse Practitioner Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist/Nurse Practitioner Nursing Leadership in Healthcare Innovations (Focus: Nursing Administration or Informatics) Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing The Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing has one of the oldest doctoral programs in the state and has prepared nurse scholars for the areas of teaching, practice, research and administration since The doctoral program is an academic, research-based program; no clinical practice requirements are included in the program of study. All students enrolled in the Ph.D. program must be licensed Registered Nurses who hold a master's degree in nursing. The program of study focuses on health promotion, protection, and health restoration with an emphasis on vulnerable populations and prepares nurse scholars and researchers to make tangible contributions to the profession and to the larger society. The program of study is offered in a web-enhanced format that includes onsite and synchronous/ asynchronous classes, mentored scholarship and individually directed learning. In fall 2010 there were 47 students enrolled in doctoral studies in the School. Students The School enrolls approximately 580 students in its BSN degree, MSN degree and PhD programs. -5-
