The Position The Vice President of Student Affairs (VPSA) is one of five senior executive officers on the President s Cabinet directly involved in the overall planning, management and advancement of the university. The VPSA plays a vital role in collaborating with campus constituencies to develop and improve policies, programs and services aimed at supporting student learning, success and satisfaction. In all activities, the VPSA is expected to model and promote the values of the Division of Student Affairs: studentcentered philosophy, integrity, collaboration, passion, quality, and the richness of diversity. The VPSA has significant authority for developing, interpreting, and administering policies and procedures and has independent authority under the President for the strategic direction and line management of the Division of Student Affairs. The VPSA supervises approximately 302 employees, oversees a large and complex budget, and exercises broad signature authority.

3 The VPSA is responsible for short- and long-range planning, overall leadership and management of the Division of Student Affairs; and the formulation, articulation and implementation of policy that has divisional, campus-wide and system-wide implications. The VPSA oversees the overall strategic direction for educational equity and student learning and retention services, especially as they relate to the enhancement of student academic support structures. The VPSA oversees the overall strategic direction for resource planning, including fiscal, space, and human resources. The VPSA oversees an aggressive capital construction program, which includes campus site and precinct planning projects, as well as ongoing major construction and renovation projects for student services facilities. The VPSA oversees the overall strategic direction for co-curricular programs and activities that increase student involvement, engagement, retention and promote student development; enhance the quality of campus life, support diversity, and community service. The VPSA is responsible for the overall strategic direction for public safety functions, parking and traffic control, and emergency services management. In addition, the VPSA advises and also troubleshoots for the President: handles special projects as assigned by the President; and acts on behalf of the President on a wide array of initiatives. The VPSA participates fully in the life of the university and represents the campus within the California State University system, to government and professional organizations, and in the community at large. The VPSA also actively engages in scholarly, creative and professional development activities. Line Management and Supervision The VPSA leads the Division in addressing critical issues and facilitates strategic thinking, organizational learning, creative problem-solving and planning. The VPSA holds Associate Vice Presidents and unit manager accountable for administering student-centered and demonstrably effective programs, for fulfilling their responsibility to steward resources wisely, for assigning work and supervising employees in accordance with collective bargaining agreements and university policy, and for enhancing information systems and applications to further the university s goals. Intercollegiate Athletics University Police The Division is responsible for the coordination of a $9 million divisional budget in General Fund, $10 million in Designated Fund and Fees, $32 million in Auxiliary Enterprise Operating Fund, $51 million in Auxiliary Enterprise Operating reserve, $11 million in ASI/BSC Funds, and numerous grant and foundation accounts. The Division maintains a staff of approximately 302 including managers and staff from all 11 of the bargaining units represented at the university. The VPSA coaches this leadership team in such areas as leading change, leveraging core resources, developing synergistic and collaborative interrelationships, managing performance, mediating conflict, and cultivating within each unit a culture of evidence that emphasizes assessment evaluation and quality improvement. Seven (7) years of successful and progressively responsible experience in student affairs administration Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including demonstrate ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds Evidence of accomplishments (including measurable outcomes) in consulting and collaborating with campus constituencies to develop, administer, and improve student academic and support services to increase student retention and graduation rates Evidence of strong commitment to the university s student-centered philosophy A keen understanding of current issues confronting students and higher education Personal involvement in student activities and enthusiasm for working with students and promoting their learning and success Evidence of facilitating change and continued organization effectiveness Experience allocating and managing resources, team building, budgeting and planning including the use of metrics for monitoring goal attainment. Demonstrated ability to innovate and continuously improve student services and methodologies Experience providing leadership in campus-wide emergency and crisis situations Evidence of fostering learning communities and promoting an inclusive campus environment Preferred Qualifications An earned doctorate in a relevant discipline is strongly preferred, although doctoral candidates or extensive related experience will be considered Ten (10) years or more of successful and progressively responsible in student affairs administration Experience at a comprehensive university Clear evidence of achievements working with underrepresented and first
