1 An Invitation to Apply: College of Nursing Associate Dean for Graduate Programs THE SEARCH The College of Nursing at East Carolina University (ECU) seeks applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean for Graduate Programs. The Associate Dean provides administrative leadership, oversight, and coordination of graduate programs. The primary functions in this position concern management of the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the graduate programs in the College of Nursing. The College is housed within the Division of Health Sciences and includes the College of Allied Health Sciences, the Brody School Medicine, the Laupus Health Sciences Library and the School of Dental Medicine. East Carolina University is a Carnegie designated Doctoral Research University with the classification of Community Engagement. Vidant Medical Center, a tertiary care hospital with 909 licensed and CON-approved beds, is one of the largest acute care hospitals in North Carolina and the flagship hospital for Vidant Health. It serves as the teaching hospital for the health sciences. The College of Nursing is supported by a liaison from the Laupus Health Sciences Library to assist faculty and students with literature searches and use of the Refworks database. The Office of Faculty Excellence provides consultation and seminars on research design, statistical software, and consultation opportunities with a statistician. The ECU Division of Research and Graduate Studies provides internal funding for an East-West Research Collaboration Award that supports research activity between health sciences faculty and faculty in other university units. ECU faculty have access to shared Centers and Research Institutes such as the Center for Health Services Research & Development, the East Carolina Heart Institute at ECU and the Center of Health Disparities Research ( The Associate Dean for Graduate Programs oversees all aspects of the College s various master s degree, post-master certificate and doctoral degree programs. And s/he serves with the other Associate Deans on the Dean s advisory council. -1-

2 RESPONSIBILITIES Specific responsibilities for the position of Associate Dean for Graduate Programs in the College of Nursing include: Provides oversight of the graduate programs: planning, development, implementation, and evaluation. Schedules academic offerings to ensure quality and consistency across programs and departments. Provides oversight to assure compliance with university policies, and requirements of external agencies. Collaborates with college, university administrators and faculty curriculum committee in reviewing, modifying, enhancing, and marketing the graduate programs. Provides leadership in curriculum development. Assists the Dean with accreditation and other reports. Generates data for program approval, evaluation, and accreditation. Provides a liaison function in the management of resources related to graduate programs. Collaborates with the Associate Deans, Program Evaluation Coordinator, Student Services, and technology staff in the collection, management and distribution of student, clinical, and academic data for planning and coordinating program evaluation. Administers university/program policies and procedures. Collaborates with Department Chair, PhD and DNP Directors, MSN Concentration Directors, and Student Service staff in the maintenance and management of record systems and computerized tracking of graduate students. Participates in student and faculty recruitment, and in appointment, reappointment, tenure and promotion of faculty in accord with the East Carolina University Faculty Manual. Participates in faculty workload assignments in collaboration with Department Chairs, Program/Concentration Directors and Associate Deans. Serves as a resource to standing and ad hoc committees of the College of Nursing faculty. Teaches selected courses in area of expertise. Provides academic counseling and conflict resolution for nursing majors as appropriate. Participates in scholarly activities and professional services as required of members of University faculty community. Serves as liaison with the community through participation in community groups and responds to community needs relevant to nursing education. Serves as designee representing the Dean as requested. Completes other assignments as requested by the Dean. QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications: Earned research focused doctorate in nursing (or related field plus a master's degree in nursing) and three years experience in baccalaureate or higher degree nursing education preferably in a health sciences center. Potential for full graduate faculty appointment with tenure at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor with the possibility of a joint appointment in the Brody School of Medicine, the College of Allied Health Sciences or other departments. -2-

3 Demonstrated evidence of published research, successful grant acquisition, effective oral and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills. Demonstrated evidence of excellence in leadership and administrative skills essential in a complex academic organization. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Graduate level teaching experience in nursing. Eligibility for unrestricted licensure as a registered nurse in North Carolina. Minimum of 2 calendar years prior, full-time employment or the equivalent in clinical nursing practice as a registered nurse, preferably in a health sciences center. 5 THE COLLEGE OF NURSING AT EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY 1 CON Vision East Carolina University College of Nursing (ECUCON) will be nationally recognized for innovative programs in nursing education and collaborative, interdisciplinary partnerships that improve the way health care is provided in rural underserved communities as well as for research that advances nursing science. The College s intent is to improve the health and well being of citizens in the region and around the world. CON Academic Programs East Carolina University College of Nursing is an NLN Center of Excellence and a CCNE accredited college offering programs at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels. The College of Nursing currently has 709 undergraduate students and 608 graduate students. In the College, 13% pre-licensure courses are delivered online, 100% RN-BSN courses are delivered online, 80% MSN courses are delivered online. The online graduate MSN concentrations were ranked #10 in the nation by U.S. & World Report (2013). PhD courses are primarily campus based. The emphasis of the PhD program is to prepare nurse scholars to advance the science of nursing practice, education and administration/health policy. A new online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program has just been approved to begin in the Fall of 2013 with 20 students. CON Facts The CON is ECU s oldest professional school. Its 50 th anniversary was celebrated during the academic year. The CON was first approved by the North Carolina Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education in March 1961 and received initial accreditation from the National League of Nursing in the fall of Accreditation has been maintained since that time. East Carolina University was authorized to offer a Master of Science degree in Nursing in In 1982, the National League for Nursing accredited the master s program. The CON received DHHS grant funds to establish a nurse-midwifery program in It is the only midwifery program in North Carolina. In 2011, the CON celebrated the 10 th anniversary of the doctorate of philosophy in nursing degree

7 In January 2004, the School was granted permission by the North Carolina Board of Nursing to offer an Alternate Entry MSN option. This option is the only MSN-based alternate entry option in North Carolina. The CON holds active membership in the National League for Nursing (NLN), the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the Southern Regional Education Board and is accredited by the Council on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), the Council on Accreditation of the Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs and the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education. The CON is a designated NLN Center of Excellence. August 2007, the East Carolina Center for Nursing Leadership (ECCNL) became an ECU official center, as well as the first nursing leadership center in NC. The ECCNL's mission is to mobilize nurses to be effective partners and leaders in creating healthier communities in eastern North Carolina. The Center has received funding from the ECU BB&T Leadership Center, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and Duke Endowment. In October, 2007 the School of Nursing received college designation status. The CON received an endowed chair made possible by the C.D. Spangler Foundation, Inc. in 2009, which was named the Richard R. Eakin Distinguished Professor. The ECU CON was ranked 10 th by U.S. News & World Report for online graduate programs in In February, 2013, the CON was granted permission by the UNC Board of Governors to establish the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. -7-
