1 The University of Louisville College of Business Dean The University of Louisville (UofL) announces the search for Dean of the College of Business. The successful candidate will succeed retiring Dean Dr. Charles Moyer, who built an excellent foundation for the College during his seven-year tenure and will oversee the completion of AASCSB reaccreditation before he steps down. The College of Business at UofL ( is one of the nation s leading business schools and is known for its unique mission and vision statements that center on entrepreneurship. The College possesses a wellestablished brand at the University, which, along with the city of Louisville, strongly supports entrepreneurial activities. The College consistently ranks among the nation s top business schools according to U.S. News & World Report, Bloomberg Business Week, Princeton Review, and Entrepreneur Magazine. With highly competitive undergraduate admission and retention standards, preeminent graduate programs, and a niche as a proven leader in teaching entrepreneurial thinking, the College of Business offers distinctive and rigorous programs in undergraduate business, accounting, and economics. Graduate programs include a Full-Time MBA, Professional MBA, Health Sector MBA, Entrepreneurship MBA (selected as the National Model MBA Entrepreneurship Program), and a Master of Accountancy; this year CEO Magazine recognized the MBA program among the top 40 in the world. 1

2 The College also offers a distinctive Ph.D. in Entrepreneurship (selected as the National Model Ph.D. Entrepreneurship Program). Enrollment is 1450 undergraduates and 300 graduate students who are taught by 80 faculty members, more than 95 percent of whom have terminal degrees or equivalent credentials. Faculty members regularly publish in the top journals in their fields, earning national and international recognition for their research. Facilities are housed in a modern, well-furnished building on UofL s historic Belknap Campus near the downtown Louisville business district and feature technologically advanced classrooms, a large auditorium, numerous meeting rooms, and advising services. The Ulmer Career Management Center is an advanced resource made available to College of Business students and alumni. As chief executive officer of the College, the Dean reports directly to Executive Vice President and Provost Shirley Willihnganz and is charged with providing innovative leadership necessary for the College to attain its vision and mission statement objectives. 3 officer, the Dean leads and manages the College, works closely with business and government, and collaborates with others across campus and throughout the region to carry out the mission of the College. Challenges and Opportunities Continue to build the College s global brand as a leader in entrepreneurship education and expand those programs while also growing other programs to national and international stature. Be an effective advocate for the College as an innovative, ethical, and highly visible economic development resource with local, regional, state, and national business and government partners. Enhance the College s culture of excellence by continuing to attract and retain the best students, faculty, and staff. Ensure further development of the College by increasing endowments and current revenue streams, generating new and consistent funding sources, and providing leadership for the College's development and fundraising goals. Maintain the College s momentum in wide-ranging fundraising initiatives and complete UofL s Bucks for Bricks campaign to renovate classrooms throughout the COB building. Increase diversity among the College s faculty, administration, staff, and student body to enrich the teaching, research, and service environment while also more fully reflecting local, state, and regional demographics. Ensure that undergraduate and graduate programs are rigorous and competitive as they grow to meet increasing demand; enhance technology and broaden on-line course offerings. Prepare students for success in the global business arena by expanding study abroad programs, international business internships and career placement resources, and other international linkages. Convey to prospective students a clear understanding of how the College s reputation for top ranked programs will positively impact their education, improve their competitiveness in the job market, and launch their successful careers. Enhance the advancement of knowledge via leading research and faculty excellence. Promote interdisciplinary programmatic and scholarly collaborations with other UofL academic units. 3

4 Value the different roles of faculty members by supporting a thriving scholarly environment for faculty committed to productive research agendas while meeting the demands of teaching faculty. Foster consistent departmental leadership that fits the role of strong teacher-scholars; develop strategies for the recruitment of new faculty that balance salaries and teaching loads with the projected retirements of senior faculty. Create new platforms for staff development and increase opportunities for staff input in order to grow their valuable role throughout the College. Develop regular and dependable communication channels among staff and faculty and build an integrated, cohesive organizational structure that encourages departments and committees to work together productively. Attributes of Excellence The College of Business at UofL has earned a preeminent reputation for excellence in highdemand programs that provide rigorous academic challenge for students with ambitious career goals. The next Dean of the College will, therefore, lead one of America s most up and coming business schools. The Search Advisory Committee has identified the following set of attributes they seek in this individual: A terminal degree in a business discipline and administrative experience in a world-class business school or an equivalent combination of education and experience; Recognition as a distinguished academic leader with a strong appreciation for scholarship and research, including an exceptional record of academic achievement in business or related disciplines that will warrant appointment as a tenured professor in the College; 4

5 Proven record of developing and implementing a vision for the future of a complex organization and the managerial skills needed to promote a culture of competitive excellence in times of change and challenge; Success in driving progressively increased levels of diversity among students, faculty, and staff and building/sustaining an environment of inclusion that reflects the contemporary global business community; The highest personal ethics and integrity with a management philosophy focused on trust, loyalty, and mutual respect with faculty, staff, and students, and an open-door administrative style that emphasizes transparency; An engaging personality, excellent communication skills, and a consensus-building, goalcentered management approach that encourages success, emphasizes accountability, and produces measurable outcomes; Prior experience desired in raising funds from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
