2 THE OPPORTUNITY The Farmer School of Business is committed to being a premier business program that provides students with the lifelong ability to acquire knowledge and translate it into responsible action in a competitive global environment. The School is consistently ranked among the top 25 undergraduate business programs in the nation by Bloomberg Business Week magazine and is currently ranked 8 th among all public Universities. Miami s business-focused academic division opened in In 1992 Richard Farmer and his wife, Joyce Barnes Farmer, provided the cornerstone gift to the School of Business. In 2005, they announced a $30 million leadership gift through the Farmer Family Foundation, with $25 million designated to underwrite the construction of the Farmer School of Business building and the balance earmarked for faculty support. Richard Farmer, a 1956 alumnus of Miami, was an executive and ultimately Chairman of the Cintas Corporation. Their generosity and that of many like-minded alumni support a school with 124 full-time faculty and 42 staff. Undergraduate enrollment at the School totals more than 4,500; there are an additional 93 graduate students. The School has almost 45,000 alumni living worldwide. The Farmer School offers bachelor and master s degree programs. Bachelor degree majors are offered in eight areas: accountancy, business-economics, finance, information systems, interdisciplinary business management, management and leadership, marketing, and supply chain and operations management. Minors are available in arts management, business analytics, business legal studies, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, information systems, international business, management, marketing, risk management and insurance, management and 2

3 leadership, and supply chain management. The School also offers a Professional MBA and master s degrees in accounting and economics. The School s facility cost $65 million and was completed in The building features innovative classroom designs and the latest technology, transforming the way students and faculty members teach and learn. The Farmer School of Business building is 210,000 square feet with 30 total classrooms: 12 case classrooms, eight cluster rooms, three standard rooms (one with capabilities to be used as a mock trial room), three seminar rooms, and four teaching labs. The building has a dedicated trading center, one small auditorium, and one large auditorium. There are also 136 faculty offices to house all six departments as well as a student commons. THE POSITION Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and working closely with the President, the Dean of the Farmer School of Business is the academic, administrative, and community leader of the School. In an era of change in higher education, the Dean will be responsible for working with the faculty to develop and implement a financially sustainable strategy that leverages and optimizes the Farmer School s existing programs and keeps the School at the forefront of undergraduate business-related education and research. The Dean provides intellectual and creative leadership, collaborates with academic programs in planning, review, and development activities, and works cooperatively and closely with faculty and 3

4 administrative staff, other deans, and University leaders. The next Dean will be responsible for determining a strategic and tactical plan for the School that moves the School and its constituencies to higher levels of achievement and success. With the University s transition to a Responsibility Centered Management (RCM) approach for budgeting, the Dean will have significant freedom in allocating resources and be able to retain and reinvest financial assets generated by the School. The Dean will also be expected to partner with the division of University Advancement and Miami University Foundation to lead fundraising for the School. 5 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Managing effectively in an academic environment balancing strong fiscal and business management skills while advocating for the School s research, teaching, and service missions. Balancing curriculum, enrollment, financial and faculty resources to optimize the quality, diversity, and availability of instructional programs. Generating increased support from corporate partners, institutional supporters, alumni and other key constituencies. Being visible and articulate as the primary representative and champion for the School s mission and image and increasing the reputation of the Farmer School both nationally and internationally. Working closely and collaboratively with other deans and units to further the goals and objectives of the University. QUALIFICATIONS Education / Licensing: Doctorate degree or equivalent experience appropriate to the Dean s role and responsibilities.
