1 Position Announcement Director, Student Health & Wellness Services Exceptional Opportunity for Campus Health Leadership and Innovation The Opportunity Humboldt State University (HSU) invites applications and nominations from experienced, strategically minded, enthusiastic, and innovative healthcare professionals for the position of Director, Student Health & Wellness Services. This is an exceptional leadership opportunity at a premier public institution that is committed to excellence and innovation in health care services delivery and campus community public health promotion. Candidates must demonstrate a deep and broad understanding of theory and practice in college, public, and community health, including clinical, prevention, and administrative functions; comprehensive knowledge of student development principles; expertise in quality improvement; and a strong commitment to the health, wellness, and academic success of undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate will have superior leadership and management skills and

2 the experience and stature to inspire staff and students with a strong vision. With a student-centered approach informing all programs and services, the new Director will create a strong role for Student Health and Wellness Services as a key campus resource; seek opportunities for innovation in program, service, and business models; enhance quality in all aspects of care, outreach, and operations; and ensure effective and strategic collaboration between Student Health and Wellness Services and other departments in both Academic and Student Affairs. Position Summary (Job #15-104) Director Student Health & Wellness Services, Administrator II or III. Salary and classification is commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time, benefited, 12-month position in the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. This position will be an Administrator II or III (depending on the incumbents qualifications) in the California State University Management Personnel Plan (MPP). Under this plan, incumbents are subject to normal management reviews and serve at the pleasure of the University President. Additional information, including the extensive benefits package, can be found at The Director, Student Health & Wellness Services (Director) is responsible for the strategic leadership, vision and direction, effective management, supervision, and day-to-day administration of the University s Student Health & Wellness Services, a AAAHC-accredited outpatient primary care medical facility which serves a diverse and growing population of approximately 8,800 students. Under the direction of and in partnership with the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, the Director collaborates closely with colleagues throughout the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, as well as with other campus and community stakeholders; the Director represents the campus on appropriate system-

3 wide committees and in regional and national professional organizations. The Director s most important responsibility is to ensure the delivery of high quality health care to students in alignment with institutional and divisional goals, purposes, and priorities. The primary priorities of this position are (1) assessing student health and wellness needs; (2) advising university-wide leadership in the development of campus wide policies and procedures and implementation of programs and services that promote a strong learning environment and healthy campus community; (3) ensuring high quality, culturally competent services, including active peer review and maintenance of accreditation of all eligible Student Health and Wellness Services functions; (4) managing a complex budget with full fiscal accountability; (5) providing leadership, vision and direction for, and overseeing a multidisciplinary staff of approximately 25 individuals in clinical services, nursing, ancillary services, health education, and administrative services; (6) organizing and leading strategic planning efforts for Student Health and Wellness Services to support implementation of priorities and ensure alignment with the university s and the division s strategic plans; (7) maintaining and operating facilities and essential technology; (8) ensuring compliance with policy, legal, regulatory, and licensing requirements; and (9) providing leadership for campus emergency preparedness and response, including management of and effective communication about public health issues. Responsibilities Leadership and Supervisory: Provides supervision, management, vision and direction for, and oversees a multidisciplinary team of approximately 25 individuals in clinical services, nursing, ancillary services, health education, and administrative services

4 personnel to ensure the delivery of high quality primary care, health promotion, and educational outreach services to HSU students. Provides strategic guidance and direction for the department. Develops and maintains mission/vision statements, strategic plans, goals, objectives, policies and procedures that provide for accredited, ambulatory student health, and health education and promotion activities. Works with the Vice President for Enrollment Management & Student Affairs, as well as Human Resources, on staff recruitment, retention, performance evaluations, and personnel management. Ensures that legal and ethical standards are upheld, and that compliance with statutory, regulatory, and professional requirements is consistently maintained in the execution of clinical services. Administrative: Administration of the department's budgets, encompassing funds from mandatory student health and facilities fees, augmented services fees, and funds from other sources; aligning resources with the department and divisional strategic priorities, and leading a continuous analysis of programmatic needs. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Student Health Center building and its key functional and technology infrastructure, including policies and procedures for building security, development and implementation of long range plans for building maintenance and repair, and planning for growth in services to match student enrollment. Programmatic:

5 Ensures continuous quality improvement in all Student Health Center programs and services, including active peer review and maintenance of accreditation of all eligible Student Health Center functions. Oversees all facets of a busy clinical health center, including, staff workflows, students experience in using the center, infection control and safety, and clinical records. Coordinates and collaborates with other departments across the university, and with community entities. Oversees the development of new outreach programs and innovative ways to deliver effective services for students. Emergency Response Planning: Responsible for the development, implementation, evaluation, and testing of the health services disaster plan and leadership of the campus pandemic committee. Ensures necessary supplies are accessible and up-to-date. Executes duties as a member of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), or designates appropriate staff as needed. Other Duties: Serves on the campus Behavioral Intervention Team (B.I.T.), representing Student Health and Wellness Services. Oversees SHAC (Student Health Advisory Committee); and leads SHAC and other efforts to prepare students to be informed healthcare consumers. Maintains knowledge of all California State University system requirements for student health services, responds to requests for information or input from the CSU Chancellor's Office, and provides leadership on a system-wide level, as appropriate.

6 Minimum Qualifications Master s degree in one of the health-related management fields, including Business Administration, Health Administration, Public Health, or a related discipline. Minimum of eight years of progressively responsible health care management experience, including five years of supervisory/managerial experience, including the design, development, and direction of healthrelated programs and services and responsibility for quality of medical practice and outreach, fiscal management, budget development, and contractor/vendor relationships. Ability and experience in overseeing major facets of a busy clinical health center, including quality management and improvement, infection control and safety, and clinical records; Ability and experience to provide leadership to direct reports and services in diagnostic imaging, pharmacy, laboratory and other professional services; Successful management style characterized by a commitment to collaboration and creativity with the ability to lead and manage a student services organization; Thorough knowledge and demonstrated success in developing and implementing strategic plans; ability to remain flexible as long-term and short-term priorities evolve; Familiarity with, or ability to operate within a collective bargaining environment; Proven ability to ensure the consistent delivery of quality, student-centered, culturally competent services;

7 Familiarity with, or ability to quickly learn and manage, accreditation and/or compliance processes, including governmental regulations, quality improvement and university policies and procedures; Ability to contribute to, and influence, the interface between health services and the campus and regulatory licensing and accreditation requirements; Superior communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing. Preferred Qualifications M.D./D.O. degree from an accredited and approved medical school, with a current unrestricted license to practice medicine and surgery in California, or eligibility for such license; or Ph.D. or Psy.D. in clinical psychology, with current unrestricted license as psychologist in California, or eligibility for such license; or M.S.N., Ph.D. in nursing, or D.N.P. with certification in advanced practice nursing, with current unrestricted license to practice as a nurse in California, or eligibility for such license; Experience in a student health care setting or primary care with similar aged populations or in a related area of primary care practice and administration; Knowledge of and experience in crisis management/emergency preparedness procedures; Experience in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customeroriented and service-centered attitude.
