As a leadng provder of bran njury rehabltaton, our mult-dscplnary team offers the rght programme to match the needs of the ndvdual, whether t nvolves a resdental stay, day placement, out-patent or outreach servces. QEF has treated people wth acqured bran njury for more than 20 years at our Bran Injury Centre n Banstead, Surrey; hstorcally known as Banstead Place. The breadth of servces and level of care for resdental clents encourages them to lve, learn and progress together n a safe, frendly, supportve envronment. Acqured Bran Injury and Rehabltaton We work wth adults who have developed dsabltes and assocated learnng dffcultes as a result of an acqured bran njury, stroke and other neurologcal condtons. Bran njury can be acqured from a severe blow to the head or through condtons such as stroke, menngts or tumours. Whlst early medcal nterventon s necessary for the stablty and survval of patents, bran njury can lead to a range of longer term cogntve, communcaton, physcal, emotonal and behavoural dffcultes. The pace and extent to whch ndvduals may recover from bran njury vares tremendously. Rehabltaton s about facltatng that recovery, helpng people to adjust to lfe after ther njury and potentally mnmsng the effects of bran njury through expert treatments and support. The Rehabltaton Pathway The rehabltaton pathway s unque to each ndvdual. We are able to help those affected, at whatever stage of ther rehabltaton journey. Our extensve facltes and specalst team enable us to work wth every condton of bran njury, from mld to severe; at early or contnung stages of recovery, to help lve a better lfe. We offer resdental, day placement and out-patent rehabltaton programmes at our Bran Injury Centre, accordng to the requrements, stage of recovery and fundng or budget avalable. Our specalst therapy teams offer rehabltaton for all cogntve, physcal, communcaton and socal dffcultes followng bran njury and stroke. Resdental and Day Rehabltaton Programmes Clncal Psychology We am to enhance cogntve, socal and emotonal functons as well as gvng ndvduals an nsght nto ther dffcultes and helpng them to develop ways to deal wth them. Independence s encouraged as far as possble through supervsed tasks such as personal care, moblty, domestc actvty and household management. Physotherapy To mprove functonal abltes, moblty and ndependence and plan for approprate long term management through expert treatment talored to each person s level of need. We provde the requred specalst equpment for each stage of the rehabltaton journey to acheve the best possble outcomes; ncludng walkng harness, treadmll, Vbrogym and access to a hydrotherapy pool and horse rdng. Speech and Language Therapy To mprove speech, language, communcaton and swallowng problems that have arsen as a result of bran njury. Indvduals are empowered n ther one-to-one or group sessons to communcate effectvely and develop copng strateges or alternatve means of communcaton to mprove ther socal nteracton. Our team teaches how to read and nterpret other peoples verbal and non-verbal communcaton as well as focusng on sequencng, problem solvng and memory to mprove language producton. Care and Rehabltaton support To provde 24 hour care, support and supervson for our clents. We foster sklls n self-care and ndependent lvng and encourage clents n ther socal and lesure actvtes. Our team undergo extensve tranng so they can offer the hghest level of care. Pastoral care extends to clents famles, wth whom we speak every week. Clents are regstered wth a local GP practce and the care team work wth the GPs and relevant specalst medcal servces to promote optmum physcal and mental health. Outreach Servces Our Outreach Servces are talored to meet the ndvdual needs of adults, aged 16 65, wth acqured bran njury and neurologcal condtons, wthn the localty. Referral process We welcome referrals from health, socal care and legal professonals and wll facltate enqures from clents famles drectly. Referrals are accepted for people who are: Over 16 years of age and medcally stable Able to actvely partcpate n and beneft from our Outreach Programmes Outreach Programmes avalable Communty rehabltaton Home or Centre based therapes are avalable on a sessonal bass wth programmes usually between 6 16 weeks. Outreach support Support workers provde 1:1 support to ndvduals n ther own home and n the communty. Ths focuses on developng ndependence as far as possble. Educaton mentors To support students n developng study sklls and accessng colleges. In addton, the therapy team can complete assessment of neuropsychologcal status, communcaton sklls, physcal abltes and functonal abltes. When you jon us On jonng, key workers are apponted from the therapy, rehab support and educaton/vocatonal teams, ensurng a collaboratve and mult-dscplnary approach to treatment and care. A postve experence Alongsde our specalst therapes (physotherapy, psychology, speech and language, and occupatonal therapy) we offer educatonal and vocatonal support as well as provdng for recreatonal and lesure needs. Our clents undergo a full assessment of ther needs and agree an acton plan to enable them to acheve ther goals. Clents are empowered to work towards ther goals, exercse choce, plan for ther future and maxmse ther ndependence. Progress s evaluated and feedback contnually gven through weekly key worker revew meetngs wth the ndvdual as well as mult-dscplnary case conferences where overall progress s dscussed. Famles are kept nformed through weekly calls from the rehab team alongsde regular communcaton wth the key therapsts. Dscusson and feedback s always welcome from the clent and ther famly. A formal revew meetng s held every 2 3 months chared by a senor member of the team nvolvng the clent, famly and funders, to revew progress and dscuss future plans. Recreaton and Lesure We offer a broad range of actvtes to complement the therapeutc experence of clents, to rebuld confdence, encourage exploraton of new nterests and to develop ther ablty to pursue new nterests when they leave us. Daly actvtes can nclude gym, swmmng, trampolnng and gardenng as well as weekend and evenng actvtes, outngs and adventure holdays. Facltes on ste nclude a state of the art rado staton and musc room. Throughout the year we organse creatve events, such as our annual pantomme, talent show and mult-cultural day, whch not only encompass many aspects of our clents rehabltaton needs but motvate and nspre as well as beng great fun. Art, Desgn and Technology Here creatvty s explored and encouraged whlst developng and renforcng all the sklls learnt n other therapy sessons. In our practcal but relaxed envronment clents can learn aspects of desgn, manufacture and fnshng n a range of meda such as pantng, pottery, woodwork, sculpture, textles and dgtal photography. We also offer hortcultural sessons and wth some clents have recently bult a sensory garden n the grounds of the Bran Injury Centre. Whlst you are here Resdental rehabltaton enables us to offer an ntegrated, mult-dscplnary approach where we work across all departments therapy, vocatonal, care, recreaton; and use all resources avalable to mprove functon and ablty n every aspect of the clent s lfe. Essental to that s our close lnk to famles, health/socal servces and case managers to manage the n-patents wder envronments and facltate smooth transton, provdng for clents ongong care, rehabltaton and support needs when they leave us. All the way through my recovery I was helped and montored at every step, especally so at QEF. I fnd t very hard to beleve how I would be n the poston I am currently n f I had not been able to spend the nne months there, learnng how to lve agan lke an ndependent ndvdual and how to survve n the world.
