51 STEM and Constructon Ben Hall On the job When I got my A level results, I was pretty downhearted but the course at Stockport College has been a brllant alternatve route to where I want to go. Choosng to study bology, chemstry, physcs and drama after school, Ben Hall mght have seemed destned for a future role n Wakng The Dead! As t was, thngs ddn t qute turn out the way he had antcpated... My GCSE exam results were amazng then somehow, everythng went downhll at A level, sad Ben. To cut a long story short, my results just weren t good enough to get me nto the unversty I d hoped for, and I found myself n a bt of a panc... Stockport College provded the soluton for Ben. Hs combnaton of A and AS levels were suffcent to secure hm a place on the FdSc (Foundaton Degree) Forensc Scence course and re-focus on hs academc career. I found the course at Stockport completely by chance and t needed lower entry requrements, whch was deal for me. The course uses Forensc Scence to teach scence and laboratory-based sklls n a vocatonal settng and ams to develop students communcaton, practcal and analytcal sklls. Because I already had a farly wde experence of the scences, I partcularly enjoyed the logcal thnkng aspect of thngs that was encouraged on the course how to analyse data, fngerprntng and so on, sad Ben. Plus, the forenscs course s a very open scence degree, whch can lead on to a wde range of optons n the broader scence feld t really helped me to keep an open mnd n more ways than one. After successfully completng the Foundaton Degree and the assocated brdgng modules run over a three-week perod durng the summer students are elgble to progress to the thrd year of the BSc (Hons) Forensc Scence degree. The Foundaton degree can also lead to drect employment n the scence sector. Contnued Ben: I don t have a career n mnd at the moment; my am s to complete a basc scence degree, and because the forenscs course s a very open scence degree t can lead on to a wde range of optons n the broader scence feld later on, so I can keep my choces open. I d recommend a foundaton degree to anyone. The way to thnk of t s just a dfferent way of gettng to where you want to be. STEM and Constructon

The requrements of the HNC have to be met Group A mnmum credt value of 75 credts Mandatory Core Unts The followng three unts are common across both programmes: Analytcal Methods for Engneers (Mathematcs) Engneerng Scence Project Desgn, Implementaton and Evaluaton Plus: Mechancal Engneerng - Mechancal Prncples Electrcal & Electronc Engneerng - Electrcal and Electronc Prncples Optons Unts These wll be selected from a lst of unts whch wll gve progresson to other HE qualfcatons at level 5 or 6 n the Qualfcatons and Credt Framework (QCF), professonal qualfcatons or to employment. Opton unts must be selected accordng to the Edexcel rules of combnaton (see Edexcel specfcatons on ther webste) and wll be dscussed at ntervew. Contnuous assessment (assgnment work) and nternal tests (stage tests; exams). WHAT CAN THESE COURSES The courses are desgned to provde a specalst vocatonal programme, lnked to professonal body requrements and Natonal Occupatonal Standards where approprate. They offer a strong, sectorrelated emphass on practcal sklls development alongsde the development of requste knowledge and understandng. The qualfcatons provde a thorough groundng n the key concepts and practcal sklls requred n the sector and natonal recognton by employers allows drect progresson to employment. A key progresson path for learners s to the second or thrd year of a degree or honours degree programme, dependng on the match of the unts to the degree programme n queston. The Hgher Natonal Dplomas n the Engneerng dscplnes have been developed to focus on: the educaton and tranng of engneers/techncans who are employed n a varety of types of techncal work, such as: aerospace systems desgn, manufacture, mantenance and techncal servces areas of the aerospace ndustry mechancal desgn, manufacture, mantenance and techncal servces areas of the engneerng ndustry operatons and mantenance systems desgn, manufacture, mantenance and techncal servces areas of the process, mechatronc, or nstrumentaton and control engneerng ndustry electrcal, electronc or communcaton desgn, manufacture, mantenance and techncal servces areas of the engneerng ndustry provdng opportuntes for engneers/techncans to acheve a natonally recognsed level 5 vocatonally specfc qualfcaton provdng opportuntes for full-tme learners to enter employment as engneers/ techncans or progress to a hgher educaton vocatonal qualfcaton such as a full-tme degree n the engneerng felds provdng opportuntes for learners to focus on the development of hgher level sklls n a technologcal and management context provdng opportuntes for learners to develop a range of sklls, technques and attrbutes essental for successful performance n workng lfe provdng a sgnfcant bass for progresson to Incorporated Engneer level va further learnng. ON THESE COURSES? Entry onto the HND s based ntally on 90/120 UCAS ponts or equvalent wth the lower threshold applyng to applcants who undertake support sessons as part of ther programme of study. Pror experence n an approprate feld wll also be consdered for mature applcants. Normally entrants would be 18 years old or older to have acheved the requred entry 111 STEM and Constructon
57 STEM and Constructon qualfcatons but anyone wth the requred entry qualfcatons wll be consdered. The followng are the usual entry requrements onto the programme. Natonal Certfcate/Dploma profle gvng 90/120 UCAS ponts. A Level and AS Level students wth 90/120 UCAS ponts n any approprate subjects along wth GCSEs of C and above n Englsh Language, Mathematcs and Scence wll be consdered. Mature students, partcularly those wth relevant ndustral experence who can demonstrate the ablty, commtment, and lkely academc profcency wll be consdered. Some mathematcs and scence qualfcatons wll be requred. AVCE/GNVQ n an approprate subject area; gvng 90/120 UCAS ponts (not NVQ see below) Student wth an approprate HNC qualfcaton can Top Up to the HND on a Part Tme or full-tme bass; an 8 unt HNC would requre 2 years to top up to an HND but a 10 unt HNC would requre only 1 year. Decdng ths would requre HE Engneerng staff to map the HNC unts aganst current specfcatons and award accredtaton for pror learnng approprately. The number of unts requred and the duraton of the Top Up course would then become apparent. All students are requred to complete an unseen, no calculator allowed entry test whch should last approxmately 15 mnutes and they wll be ntervewed regardng ther sutablty for ther chosen programme and ther reasons for choosng engneerng as a career. Note that NVQ awards, as work-based qualfcatons, may contrbute towards an applcant s entry profle but need supplementary academc qualfcatons and/or experental learnng to be consdered for the programme. Wth the excepton of Accountng at NVQ LV 3, NVQs score no UCAS ponts. We recognse that students possessng only an NVQ do not normally have the requred academc capablty to cope wth a level 4, academc programme, as they do not have the necessary academc background, partcularly n mathematcs; 95% of the unts taught n HE Engneerng are mathematcs rch (even students wth the requred academc entry qualfcatons fnd the programmes dffcult). Ths apples to all HNC and HND Engneerng programmes. HOW LONG ARE THESE COURSES? Normally 2 years full tme but could be studed on a part tme bass. The Top Up (from HNC to HND) duraton depends on pror unt accredtaton and could be studed full tme or part tme. Full tme attendance s normally spread over a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday but depends on unts chosen and tmetables. Part tme Top Up attendance s normally a Wednesday. Other attendance patterns can be dscussed at ntervew. Applcatons can be made through UCAS or, for an applcaton form, please contact Course Enqures on or emal: [email protected] You are strongly advsed to dscuss your applcaton frst wth the staff n HE Engneerng at the college usng the contact detals below for specfc nformaton and to avod confuson regardng any aspect of the course or your applcaton. Applcatons can be processed before the UCAS applcaton or n parallel wth the applcaton f necessary. If you are applyng for fnancal support then you are advsed to make the UCAS applcaton as soon as possble regardless of any applcaton to Stockport College. You are also advsed to dscuss any fnancal matters relatng to student loans etc. wth the staff n the Student advce Centre at the College. Note that UCAS often ssue a progress status for your applcatons whch can be gnored as they do ths on a tmed bass but we operate on an as ntervewed bass and the two systems rarely match; all offers etc. are subject to ntervew and pre-course testng and wll be communcated by us drectly to the applcant.
