Program & Membership Andrew Roberts Executive Director Greetings to All: In Africa, no tribe is considered to have warriors more fearsome or more intelligent than the mighty Masai. It is thus surprising to learn the traditional greeting that passes between Masai warriors. Kasserian Ingera, they say when passing. It means, How are the children? This greeting between the Masai shows the high value that the Masai always place on their children s well-being. All the children are well, is the traditional response, meaning that peace and safety prevail, that the priorities of protecting the young, the powerless, are in place, that Masai society has not forgotten its reason for being, its proper functions and responsibilities. All the children are well means that life is good. It means that the daily struggles of existence do not preclude proper caring for the young. Simply put, here at the Greater Waterbury YMCA, for 150 years we have agreed with the Masai. And I for one, hope we always will. There is much to celebrate and be grateful for this Spring: summer camp is close at hand, our Strong Kids Campaign is winding down another successful effort, our young YMCA leaders - the Kingz and Bombers - are finishing up another successful school year, our learn-to-swim week program is ready to go, our 150th Anniversary planning is gaining momentum we have booked Village People (yes, those Village People) to play a benefit concert Friday, October 3 at the Palace Theater (save the date-tickets go on sale in August), the list goes on and on. Come on down to the YMCA and see how we can partner with you to improve your life. At the Y, we are a community not a commodity. And yes, all the children are well! Thanks for reading, Andrew The YMCA Mission Statement To put Christian principles into practice through programs that develop a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Why choose the Y?
