1 THE WAVERLY CENTER MAY 2016 Another busy month is coming up here at the Waverly Center. Of course there is Mother s Day and Memorial Day. On May 9 you need to come on in and vote on the town budget. The following Monday we are hosting a blood drive with the Red Cross. And Portland s 175 th Anniversary celebration is kicking off with the Town Wide Tag Sale on May 7 and the Riverfront Music Festival on May 14. Clear your calendars! We are looking for a few volunteers to help. You may do the full shift or a couple of hours. Please let Mary know if you are willing and/or able to help out. REVERSE MORTGAGE PROGRAM Are you curious about reverse mortgages and how they work? She will be at the center to provide free clinics that can include otoscopic inspection of the ears canals for wax, cleaning and maintenance of hearing aids, trouble shooting for malfunctioning hearing aids and rehabilitative support and counseling for the hearing impaired or hearing aid wearer. She can also provide free hearing testing by appointment either at the center or in the privacy of your home. Clinics will be held the second Tuesday of each month at 11:30am. At this time no appointments are needed. Just stop in and take advantage of this free service. We are always looking for new program ideas or fundraising ideas around here. If you find yourself having a brilliant idea, don t hesitate to share!

3 WE ARE DONATION CENTRAL! Across the hall from Mary and Carol s offices, you will notice a new drop spot for your donations to all the worthwhile causes we support at The Waverly Center. There is a spot for your old eyeglasses and hearing aids, grocery coupons, can pop tops, yarn and Boxtops for Education. Through these donations we support our local schools, the Lions Clubs, Ronald McDonald House and our military families. The collection of medicine bottles for Malawi was so successful it has come to a close. None of us can do as much by ourselves as we can all do together. ZUMBA GOLD Are you looking to step up your fitness routine? Try out our Zumba Gold! These classes are the result of a partnership with Middlesex County YMCA. The classes are on Wednesdays at 10:45am and last one hour. If you are a YMCA member or have Silver Sneakers through your health insurance there is no cost for the class. Otherwise, it is $5.00 per class and we ask for a 5 week commitment. For more information, call the center. NEW YOGA CLASS There will be a new yoga class beginning at the center on Monday, May 2 at 1:00pm. It is a 45 minute class suitable for all and will be taught by Marie Colandrea, an experienced teacher with the YMCA. The cost is $5 per class or free if you belong to the YMCA or have Silver Sneakers through your health insurance. Please call the center at to sign up. WILL ANYONE BRAVE THE ZIP LINE? On Tuesday, May 31, the center will take a trip to CT s newest shopping experience, Jordan s Furniture in new Haven. Besides showcasing over 100,000 square feet of furniture, there is also Blaze Pizza, Scoop Ice Cream and a zip line on the premises. It should be interesting! The bus leaves at 9:30am, returning in the early afternoon. Transportation cost is $5.00. Please call to sign up.

4 TIS A PUZZLEMENT The Waverly Salon will focus on jigsaw puzzles on Tuesday, May 10 at 6:00pm. We will learn a little bit about the history of puzzles and then try our hand at putting some together. Bring some friends and form a team or play on your own. There will be some prizes to win. The cost is $5.00 which includes a light dinner. Please sign up by noon on Monday, May 9. ARTVAN TO ISABELLA STEWART GARDNER MUSEUM Join our ARTVan as we travel to THE Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum of Art in Boston on Thursday, May 12. The Gardner Museum houses one of the most remarkable and intimate collections of art in the world today. Gardner was a dynamic supporter of the artists of her time, encouraging music, literature, dance, and creative thinking across artistic disciplines. The bus will leave the center at 8:30am and return around dinner time. The cost is $25 which covers transportation and admission. Lunch will be at the museum café. Please sign up by May 10. DINING OUT CLUB TO ELM CITY SOCIAL The center s Dining Out club is going to Goodfellas in New Haven on Wednesday, May 18. We will leave the center at 4:15pm. Transportation $5.00. 5 FREE TRIAL MEMBERSHIP Just a reminder that the Middlesex YMCA offers Portland seniors a free 2 week trial membership. Fliers with the coupon for the trial membership can be found on the table in the upstairs hallway. 175 th ANNIVERSARY BASKETS The 175 Anniversary Celbraion Commmitee is selling two types of Peterboro baskets with the commemorative seal embossed on the lid one is a 2- pie basket, the other is a small storage basket. Both are currently on display at The Waverly Center. Click on the link below for dimensions of both baskets and for an order form. Order forms are also available in the Mary Lou Rice Room at the center. It is never too early to think about holiday gifts! DASH FOR THE STASH? Can you use a $1000? Be sure to check out the DASH FOR THE STASH posters in the upstairs hallway for a chance to win $1000. This is a program from the CT State Banking Department. It runs through May 15. Take a chance. You have nothing to lose and $1000 to gain. MAH JONGG AT THE WAVERLY CENTER A new Mah Jongg group has begun meeting at the center on Thursday afternoons at 1:00pm. Beginners are welcome. Similar to the Western card game rummy, Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. Give it a try!
