The Opportunity Montclair State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Education and Human Services, one of the premier schools of education and human services in the nation. The College is ranked in the top 20 for teacher preparation by US News and World Report s Best Graduate Schools and one of ten leading teacher education programs by Edutopia. With nationally accredited programs in health and human development, the college is engaged in research and practice with the aims of increasing equity, social justice, democratic practice, critical thinking, and reflection. The college has a long and proud history of excellence and innovation in teaching, research, and scholarship, and serves as a leader in preparing professionals to work collaboratively to change people s lives. With a full-time tenured/tenure track faculty of 115 and over 4,900 students, the College of Education and Human Services offers twenty-four (24) programs leading to the B.A., B.S., M.A., M.S., M.Ed., M.A.T., M.P.H., Ed.D. and Ph.D. degrees. The College is organized into seven departments: Counseling and Educational Leadership; Early Childhood, Elementary and Literacy Education; Educational Foundations; Exercise Science and Physical Education; Family and Child Studies; Health and Nutrition Sciences; and Secondary and Special Education. The College s programs for educators reflect deep partnerships with the University s arts and sciences disciplines and with public schools and fosters a commitment to teaching for social justice and democracy as one of the original members of the National Network for Educational Renewal. The College s teacher education programs are coordinated university-wide in the nation s first established Center of Pedagogy, which features the Montclair State University Network for Educational Renewal, an award winning school-university partnership. The College s programs for human services are committed to maintaining meaningful connections with the surrounding community through engaged research and practice with local, state, and federal health and human development agencies, hospitals, and with non-profit organizations to reduce disparities and increase social justice across fields and contribute to enhancing the quality of life in the region. As part of this commitment, the College houses several externally-funded applied research labs in the human services. The College s Ben Samuels Children s Center houses a model, inclusive program for children birth to age five. The Center for Autism and Early Childhood Mental Health offers professional development, education, clinical services and research in the areas of autism, infant and early childhood development and mental health. The Center for Research and Evaluation on Education and Human Services provides evaluation and applied research services for educational agencies and institutions, community organizations, and health-related government and human service agencies. The College s ADP Center for Learning Technologies offers state-of-the-art programs including workshops, seminars, and conferences and services such as room/lab rentals, media services, equipment use and 1:1 technology help to students, faculty and staff across the university. The College is housed in University Hall, a new, technologically advanced academic building, featuring a 500 person capacity conference center with 2 panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline.

Duties and Responsibilities The Dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the College and as a key member of the President s senior leadership team. The Dean must be an intellectual leader not only within the College, but across the campus, in the state of New Jersey, and nationwide. S/he must have the vision to identify and pursue new opportunities for the College and the intellectual strength to direct its growth and development within the framework of shared academic governance, with special attention to the recruitment and development of a diverse and outstanding faculty and student body. The Dean will demonstrate and maintain an understanding of all the constituent programs and areas of faculty expertise in the College of Education and Human Services. S/he will guide the college s educational programs, research endeavors, clinical practices, community outreach and service programs. The Dean will be responsible for the administrative and fiscal management of the College and will allocate resources to promote program excellence, efficiency and collaboration. S/he will be responsible for effectively representing the College to the campus, alumni and external communities, and will provide leadership in the pursuit of external resources from both private and governmental sources. The Dean will be expected to influence and implement government policy affecting pre-k to 12 education, health and human services, and higher education at the state and national levels. The dean will be imaginative in finding ways to advance the goals and objectives of both the College and the University and fostering successful collaborations across the campus. The Dean will provide leadership to a large, diverse and complex College whose collective vision is to build a healthier, better educated, and more just society. 3

Qualifications Candidates should possess an earned doctorate and a record of distinguished academic achievement appropriate for appointment at the rank of full professor in a department of the College. In addition, s/he should possess: An outstanding reputation and recognized leadership in the fields of education and human services A commitment to excellence and innovation in teaching/learning, scholarship and research, and the effective application of knowledge A record of successful administration in higher education and a broad understanding of the issues and trends in higher education and K-12 education A demonstrated record in the acquisition of external resources from government agencies, foundations, the corporate sector and/or private donors Familiarity with the national accreditation standards and protocols for teacher education and academic disciplines within human services Familiarity with the requirements and expectations of programs related to health and human development An ability to advocate in the arenas of health and human development on behalf of the college to increase its competitive prominence locally and nationally Experience with cutting edge instructional and administrative technologies (experience with Banner an advantage) Demonstrated ability to foster a collegial, collaborative work environment A commitment to maintaining and extending student and faculty diversity Strong interpersonal, public speaking, writing, and listening skills 4

Leadership Susan A. Cole, President Can Duties and Responsibilities Dr. Susan A. Cole assumed office in September of 1998 as the eighth president of Montclair State University, which is the second largest university in New Jersey, with more than 20,000 graduate and undergraduate students. Dr. Cole served as President of Metropolitan State University in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota from 1993 to 1998 and, prior to that, as Vice President for University Administration at Rutgers University, The State University of New Jersey, Associate University Dean for Academic Affairs at Antioch University, and a faculty member at The City University of New York. Dr. Cole earned three degrees in English and American literature: a BA from Barnard College, Columbia University and an MA and PhD from Brandeis University. Dr. Cole writes and speaks extensively about current issues in American higher education. 6

Leadership Willard Gingerich, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Willard Gingerich joined Montclair State as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in 2008. He came to the University from Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he served as Provost, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of English. Prior to that, at St. John's University, he held the position of Dean of the Graduate School before serving as Vice Provost for Graduate Programs and Research. A former Fulbright Scholar in American Literatures, Dr. Gingerich received his BA in English from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He studied in Mexico at the Universidad Nacional Aut6noma de Mexico and the Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia before earning his PhD in English from the University of Connecticut, where he was both an NDEA Fellow and an NDFL Fellow. 7

Montclair, New Jersey An Exceptional Location The University's park-like, 250-acre campus is primarily located in Montclair, New Jersey, just 14 miles west of New York City. Montclair is a diverse, affluent suburban community of nearly 38,000 residents. Two campus train stations vibrant college town, Montclair is filled with cafes and bistros, boutiques and restaurants, movie theaters and art galleries. There are numerous parks and nature reserves in Montclair, as well as public tennis courts, skating rinks and swimming pools. The town is home to minor league baseball's New Jersey Jackals, a rugby club and a cricket team. Montclair's public schools serve students from kindergarten through grade 12, as do a number of private and parochial schools. Two campus train stations provide regular service into and out of Manhattan, a thirty-five to forty-five minute ride. 8
