1 Job title: Department/School: Grade: Location: Chair in Sport (Social Sciences) Education Chair University of Bath Campus Job purpose The Department of Education wishes to appoint a Chair in Sport (Social Sciences) who is a scholar of international standing with a strong record of publication and securing research funding. We are seeking a dynamic, adaptable colleague who will work with us to ensure the continuing strength of the Department in both research and teaching, within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, within the University more widely, and within the wider external environment. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain and develop his/her own programme of research, to support the research of colleagues, and to contribute to teaching and research supervision on relevant programmes. It is expected that the successful candidate s scholarly activities will complement the existing research foci in the Department s Physical Cultural Studies research group, and further develop links with the Sport, Health and Exercise Group in the Department for Health and/or the other two Education research groups: Globalisation, International Education, Organisation and Policy, and Philosophy, Language and Educational Practices. It is likely that the successful candidate will possess demonstrated skills of leadership in a rapidly changing higher educational environment. While applications are welcomed from all areas of sport and the social sciences, we are particularly interested in those whose scholarship can make strong links to the following (inter-)related areas: Sport, Health and Social Policy; Sport, Physical Activity and (Dis)Ability; Sport Health and Wellbeing; Sociology/social-psychology of Health, Physical Activity and the Body; Sport, Physical Activity and Research Methodologies; Sport and Physical Activity across the Lifespan; Sport and (International) Development.. 2 Career and Professional Development Activities To maintain and develop his/her own programme of research, to support the research of colleagues, and to contribute to teaching and research supervision on relevant programmes. To develop, promote and manage the effective delivery of knowledge transfer, continuing professional development, consultancy and other forms of external engagement, as appropriate. To provide leadership within the department and beyond as appropriate. From time to time you may be asked to assist in the facilitation of CPD activities. This will form part of your substantive role and you will not receive additional payment for these activities. Main duties and responsibilities 1 To maintain and develop a personal research programme, including the securing of external funding and publication in leading peer-reviewed journals commensurate with the objectives of the Department of Education and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences 2 To contribute significantly to academic leadership of the Department of Education 3 To contribute to teaching and research supervision on, and development of, the Department s taught and research programmes 4 To further enhance the international standing and reputation of the Department and the University more widely 5 To perform other duties consistent with the role of chair You will from time to time be required to undertake other duties of a similar nature as reasonably required by your line manager. 2

4 Commitment to working within professional and ethical codes of conduct Commitment to working collegially as part of a team and with external partners such as schools and other agencies A willingness to make difficult decisions and see through agreed plans The Department of Education The Department of Education is a thriving research-led and practitioner-orientated community that has links with a wide range of schools and other educational institutions in the United Kingdom and throughout the world. The latest Research Assessment Exercise judged 85% of its research output to be of a quality internationally recognised or world leading, in terms of its originality, significance and rigour. At the Institutional Audit in 2008, the Quality Assurance Agency gave the University as a whole the highest rating ( confidence ), indicating rigorous, effective and consistent mechanisms for the management of academic standards and the quality of learning opportunities for students. The Department of Education offers the research degrees of Master of Research (MRes), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Education (EdD), as well as three Masters level (MA) taught programmes in Education, TESOL and Sport. Also offered are the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), BA programmes in Childhood, Youth & Education Studies, and Sport & Social Sciences, and a foundation degree in Sports Performance which can lead into the BSc in Sport (Sports Performance). Additionally, sports-related programmes are offered in the Department for Health, including an undergraduate Sport and Exercise Science programme. Research Researchers in the Department have major collaborative links with other scholars and institutions worldwide, and our research is characterised by a strong practical and policy focus. The Department s research has increasingly been enhanced through its membership of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (which contains Social Policy Sciences, Health, Economics, Psychology, and Politics and International Studies). Academic staff are expected to be research active and to engage in scholarship that enhances the standing of the Department of Education and the Faculty. The Department is organized around three research groups that serve to guide scholarly activity and strategic direction: Globalisation, International Education, Policy & Organisation (led by Professor Hugh Lauder), Philosophy, Language & Educational Practices (led by Professor Andy Stables) and Physical Cultural Studies (@pcsbath, led by Dr Mike Silk). The groups provide outreach roles in knowledge transfer and the dissemination of our work to practitioners, research institutes, businesses, national and local government, the EU, overseas governments, international agencies, charities and NGOs. Two journals are edited by members of the Department: the Journal of Education and Work (Editor Professor Hugh Lauder) and the Journal of Research in International Education (Editor Dr Mary Hayden). Most staff of the Department are research active, and are expected to publish regularly and frequently. Much of the research undertaken informs teaching programmes and pedagogy. Currently, over 170 full-time and part-time students are enrolled for research degrees (MRes, 4
5 PhD and EdD), and this aspect of the Department s work continues to grow strongly. Research students have departmental accommodation, and support for students is coordinated through staff who work closely with the Directors of Studies for the programmes. The Department is, through its membership of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, part of the ESRC Doctoral Training Centre in the South West. The Department incorporates a strong group of academics focused on the social science of sport. group are devoted to the contextually based understanding of the corporeal practices, discourses, and subjectivities through which active bodies become organized, represented, and experienced in relation to the operations of social power. Given physical culture is both manifest and experienced in different forms, work in this group adopts a multi-method approach (including ethnography and autoethnography, participant observation, discourse, policy and media analysis, and contextual analysis) and advances an equally fluid theoretical vocabulary, utilizing concepts and theories from a variety of disciplines (including cultural studies, psychology, policy analysis, education, pedagogy, economics, history, media studies, philosophy, sociology, and urban studies) in engaging and interpreting the particular aspect of physical culture under scrutiny. The group fosters close links with the Sport Health and Exercise Science Group in the Department or Health, promoting inter-disciplinary scholarship in sport, health, physical activity and the body. Activities in this group are generally grouped into the following five, inter-related and overlapping, areas: 1. Sport, the Body and Society 2. Policy, Power and Practice 3. Public, Cultural and Body Pedagogies 4. (Un)Healthy and Physically (In)Active Bodies 5. Innovations in Research Practices More details on the Physical Cultural Studies group can be found at: Research Programmes The PhD programme is offered in both full- and part-time mode in the range of academic areas covered by staff in the Department. The MRes is a one-year full-time research training programme run in co-operation with other departments in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The EdD degree comprises four tutored units that are followed by a 40,000 word research thesis. Two units are compulsory (Educational Research: Philosophy & Practice, and Educational Policy) and two are chosen from units offered by the Department s research groups. Units are offered in intensive study weeks in Bath, and some are available through programmes of directed learning. Teaching programmes MA Programmes There are currently three MA programmes: the MA in Education, the MA in TESOL and the MA in Coach Education and Sports Development (currently under revision). These degrees are awarded for the satisfactory completion of five units of study plus a 15,000 word dissertation. Named degrees (in Educational Leadership & Management, International Education, and Learning & Teaching) may be awarded for successful completion of particular combinations of units plus a dissertation grounded in the specialist area of the degree. Study within the MA in Education programme can lead to one of three qualifications: Master of Arts (MA) in Education, the Postgraduate Diploma in Education and the Postgraduate Certificate in Educational Studies. Currently over 1800 students worldwide are enrolled in the Department s MA programmes, many on a part-time basis. An agreement with the 5
6 International Baccalaureate (IB) organisation allows experienced teachers of one of the IB programmes to work towards the award of IB Educator Certificates in conjunction with study on the MA in Education programme. Postgraduate Certificate in Education The PGCE in Partnership In the academic year 2012/13 the one-year PGCE course has an enrolment of over 120 students. The following subjects are offered at secondary level; English, history, IT, modern foreign languages, mathematics, physical education, and science. English and science are also offered for middle years. In addition, the Department validates the SCITT programmes in Swindon and Bournemouth. Undergraduate Programmes Since 2001 the Department has offered an innovative BA degree programme in Sport and Social Sciences, which is attractive to a wide range of students who wish to pursue their studies in sport from a social sciences perspective. The Foundation degree in Sport (Sports Performance) is intended for athletes who wish to combine academic study and sports training. It is a two year programme, with the option of continuing onto the BSc in Sport (Sports Performance). In 2008 a new programme (the BA in Childhood, Youth and Education Studies) was developed in conjunction with the university s Department of Psychology. The Department also offers a range of units to undergraduates of other university departments. These units cover effective learning in higher education, learning theory, education in society, educational psychology and science education. 6
