1 VICE PRESIDENT FOR CAMPUS LIFE AND STUDENT SERVICES Brown University invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice President for Campus Life and Student Services. As the University s chief student affairs officer, the Vice President reports to President Christina Paxson, provides strategic vision and direction for the student experience at Brown, and serves as a member of the University s leadership team. The University seeks a collaborative, creative, energetic individual with significant senior management experience in student affairs and a genuine passion for working with students. BROWN UNIVERSITY Located in historic Providence, Rhode Island, Brown University was founded in 1764, making it the seventh-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. A member of the Ivy League and the Association of American Universities (AAU), Brown is renowned for the quality of its teaching, research, and student-centered curriculum. Brown is an independent, coeducational Ivy League institution comprising undergraduate and graduate programs, plus the Alpert Medical School, School of Public Health, School of Engineering, and the School of Professional Studies. 2 Undergraduates pursue bachelor s degrees in more than 75 concentrations, ranging from Egyptology to cognitive neuroscience. Graduate students study in more than 70 programs. The broad scope of options vary from interdisciplinary opportunities in molecular pharmacology and physiology to a master s program in acting and directing through the Brown/Trinity Repertory Consortium. Additional programs include the Undergraduate Summer Session and Pre-College Programs for high school students on campus, online, and abroad. SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY OF THE POSITION Reporting directly to the President, the Vice President for Campus Life and Student Services provides leadership to the University s initiatives and programs designed to create an outstanding campus experience for all students undergraduate, graduate and medical. The Vice President oversees a staff of approximately 250 with a combined operating budget of $67 million. S/he serves as an adviser to the President on all issues related to campus life. The Vice President is a member of the President s Cabinet, Executive Committee, and staffs the Committee on Campus Life of the Corporation of Brown University. The offices reporting directly to the Vice President are as follows: Student Life and student engagement includes the Stephen Robert 62 Campus Center and Student Activities Office; the Brown Center for Students of Color; the Sarah Doyle Women s Center; the LBGTQ Center; Student Veterans and Commissioning Programs; International Student and Visitor Experience; Student and Employee Accessibility Services; and student conduct and support services. Residential Life is responsible for maintaining student residences which support the educational mission of the university. A large part of learning inevitably takes place outside the classroom and the office is committed to providing students with a safe, comfortable and well-maintained living space in an academically enriching environment. Athletics and Physical Education includes 38 Division I teams the second largest intercollegiate athletic program in the nation coaches, staff, and more than 900 2

3 student-athletes. The department also supports an extensive club sport, intramural and fitness program, manages the University s athletic facilities, and promotes a wide-ranging community service effort. Health Services and Counseling and Psychological Services provide on-site high quality confidential care and health educational services to meet student health needs. Physical and psychological health allow the student to devote more meaningful effort to the goals of education and self-discovery. Chaplains and Religious Life makes pastoral care and advisement available for any member of the Brown community students, staff, faculty, and alumni. The office seeks to create spaces and opportunities where questions can be voiced and explored openly, whether their concerns originate within religious, philosophical, ethical, or spiritual practice. OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR THE NEXT VICE PRESIDENT Brown s next Vice President for Campus Life and Student Services will have a unique opportunity to work collaboratively with colleagues on important matters of the academic and non-academic student experience, and to build and maintain a campus culture that is conducive to learning and individual pursuits. The responsibilities of the next Vice President will include the following: Oversee offices and programs that are responsible for the health, safety, and welfare of a diverse body of undergraduate, graduate and medical students in a collaborative environment; Lead a complex organization in a fiscally responsible and efficient manner, with a continued focus on the development of a dedicated and professional staff; Work in close collaboration with the Dean of the College, Dean of the Graduate School, and the Office of the Provost to integrate the academic and co-curricular student experience; Foster and maintain a campus community grounded in mutual respect and trust to effectively integrate all students into the life of the University; Promote inclusion and diversity and work to foster a dynamic ethos on campus that encourages and enriches intellectual inquiry and development, in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion and the Title IX Program Office; 3

4 Advise the President on issues of student affairs and campus activities; Serve as a liaison between the university administration and student government, and as an adviser to student committees. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Brown University is seeking a Vice President for Campus Life and Student Services with a demonstrated record as an educational leader, attuned to the needs and concerns of students in a residential university setting. A master s degree or equivalent experience is required. Strong candidates will possess the following: Significant administrative experience at a complex institution of higher education, with a record of progressively responsible leadership positions, preferable in multiple student and/or academic service areas; Capacity to facilitate organizational change and development consistent with the mission of the University; Broad expertise with current best practices, and an awareness of emerging issues in student affairs and higher education; Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds; Demonstrated experience in personnel and fiscal management, including the ability to hire, cultivate and retain outstanding talent; Ability to work effectively with students; Sound judgment and the ability to make difficult decisions; Evidence of creative strategic thinking; Strong written and oral communication skills; and Energy, integrity, and a sense of humor.
