CHAPTER INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING THE ETHERNET OPTION BOARD Pre-Istallatio Requiremets I order to support the istallatio of the Etheret Optio Board, the ADP Series 400 Timeclocks must cotai the followig: A mai PC board with part umber (P/N) 660086-xxx. This part umber is silk-screeed i the middle of the mai PC board. Older timeclocks may ot cotai this board ad thus, caot support the Etheret optio. 256K or more of RAM. (NOTE: This is ot a issue i most ADP accouts because ADP oly supports the Etheret coectio to the 480 Timeclock, which ships with more tha 256k RAM) A permaetly-assiged Iteret Protocol (IP) address for the clock. This must be obtaied by the cliet s etwork admiistrator. (NOTE: Etheret clocks do ot support DHCP.) To determie RAM size: Swipe a authorized maiteace badge or eter a valid maiteace Persoal Idetificatio Number (PIN). 2 Perform maiteace mode commad 0 to display the available RAM size. Timeclocks with the mai PC board other tha P/N 660086-xxx must be swapped out for a ew clock. Etheret Optio Card Istallatio V098 Istallig ad Cofigurig the Etheret Optio Board -
Istallig the Etheret Optio Board Discoect power supply ad detach the back cover from the base of the timeclock. Timeclock power supply icludes the AC Adapter ad Lead Acid battery backup uit. 2 Isert the plastic Etheret circuit board stadoffs o the Mai Board as show i the illustratio that follows. MAC Address 3 Plug the Etheret optio board (hereafter referred to as the NIC) ito coector P3 o the Mai Board. The coector is labeled NET BRD. You must alig the coector with its socket, while applyig equal pressure at the four stadoffs ad press dow simultaeously. 4 Plug the 0BASE-T cable ito P o the NIC ad attach to the cliet's etwork.(this coectio is supplied by the cliet). Re-attach back cover to base, ad coect power supply. - 2 Istallig ad Cofigurig the Etheret Optio Board Etheret Optio Card Istallatio V098
Assigig a IP Address to the Clock Get a valid static IP address from the cliet s etwork admiistrator. Note: If you are replacig a existig Etheret-eabled clock, you should get a ew IP address. This will help prevet commuicatios problems with the ew clock. (For those who uderstad TCP/IP commuicatios: This is because the clock does ot broadcast a ARP request at power up. This ca lead to a mismatch betwee MAC ad IP addresses i the ARP caches of coectig devices o the etwork, icludig the etime PC). 2 Swipe a maiteace badge to eter commad mode. 3 Press 9, the 0, the ENTER to eter Procedure mode. 4 Go to Procedure 30, Step, to eter a six-digit password for the clock. 5 Go to Procedure 30, Step 2, to set the IP address i the clock. Note: You must obtai a valid IP address from the cliet. Do ot make this umber up! Etheret Optio Card Istallatio V098 Istallig ad Cofigurig the Etheret Optio Board - 3
Useful Maiteace Mode Commads Commad 85: Display Accessory Address Etheret (MAC) address is of the form, 00-40-58-XX-XX-XX, where 00-40-58 is the IEEE MAC vedor code, ad XX-XX-XX is the IEEE address for the PCB assembly. Commad 39: Re-iitialize Accessory Device (i Flash Mode) Re-iitializes the coected accessory device i cold start. Commad 85: Test Accessory Board Performs tests o the coected accessory device. The diagostic tests are idepedet for the device. The followig tests are available for the Etheret Accessory (ST-NIC) Network Iterface Cotroller: Code, Iteral Loopback - A iteral loopback test is performed. Code 2, Exteral Loopback - Trasmits packets to the cable i loopback mode to check all trasmit ad receive paths ad the cable itself. Code #, Tests All - Performs both tests i sequece Commad 84 #: Request Accessory ID Commad 84 displays the boot versio umber. Commad 84# displays accessory board ID. If o accessory is istalled, the message "NOT AVAILABLE" is displayed. Commad 84##: Request Etheret ID (MAC Address) Displays the factory programmed Etheret ID. Commad 20 #7: Request Accessory Audit/Stat Report Produces a etwork/sessio statistics report for iteral use oly. - 4 Istallig ad Cofigurig the Etheret Optio Board Etheret Optio Card Istallatio V098
Troubleshootig the Istallatio Importat Facts about the Etheret NIC The NIC is 0BASE-T oly. There are o 00BASE-T NICs available. 2 If the NIC receives more tha 20 broadcasts messages per secod, the NIC will reset ad the coectio will be lost. 3 You caot daisy-chai RS-485 clocks off of a Etheret clock. 4 You may still be able to PING a clock that has a defective mai board. 5 The battery backup time for a clock with a Etheret NIC ad a lead acid battery backup uit istalled is a maximum of six hours. 6 The NIC does ot have a lik status LED. 7 The host-pc-to-clock relatioship is a master/slave relatioship. The clock oly commuicates whe iformatio is requested by the host PC. Troubleshootig Coectivity Problems Make sure the lik status LED is lit o both the NIC card ad the port of the Etheret device (hub or switch) that the clock is coected to. If it is ot, check for loose coectios. 2 If you ca PING the clock, but caot commuicate with it from etime: Check for a duplicate IP address o the etwork by discoectig the clock ad pigig the IP address agai. If there is a respose, aother device o the etwork is usig the same address. If this is a replacemet clock, get a ew IP address (easiest approach), or update the ARP tables o etwork devices to reflect the MAC address of the ew clock. 3 If you caot PING the clock: Make sure that the NIC is seated correctly. Etheret Optio Card Istallatio V098 Istallig ad Cofigurig the Etheret Optio Board - 5
Check the clock cofiguratio ad the etime cofiguratio to esure that the IP address is etered correctly. Make sure that the clock has the appropriate amout of memory istalled. Try to PING the clock from aother statio. If you ca, this may idicate a problem with the etime PC s etwork coectio. Try to PING other etwork devices. If you caot, there may be a problem with the etwork itself. Cotact the cliet etwork admiistrator. 4 If you caot PING after oe of the followig evets: a ew NIC was put i, ad commuicatios do't work the clock ad the NIC have bee replaced with ew uits, usig the same IP address, but commuicatios do't work. Check to see if the pollig PC is commuicatig to the clock through a Etheret switch. If it is, it is possible that the switch has stored a associatio betwee the IP address of the origial NIC of this timeclock ad to the MAC address of the origial NIC. To correct this problem, the etwork admiistrator eeds to: a) Get a ew IP address for the clock. b) Remove the etry from the switch database (ARP table). c) Put a static etry i the switch database (ARP table) that correctly associates the clock s MAC address with the assiged IP address. 5 If the clock is o a differet segmet tha the etime PC ad you caot PING the clock, the move the clock to the same segmet ad retry the PING. If everythig works, there could be a possible defective hub. - 6 Istallig ad Cofigurig the Etheret Optio Board Etheret Optio Card Istallatio V098
Troubleshootig Etheret Performace If performace of the clock is slow or sporadic (usually durig a update cycle): Cosult the etwork admiistrator to fid out times of day that the etwork is least busy. Perform pollig ad updates at least busy times. 2 Ask the cliet s etwork admistrator if it is possible to limit the umber of broadcast packets that the clock has to process. Ways to do this: Icrease the iterval betwee broadcasts by etwork-coected devices (priters, for example). O a switched etwork, ivestigate whether it is possible to filter broadcast packets from the port that the clock is attached to. The clock does ot process broadcast packets. If the cliet s hubs or switches have the ability to filter traffic to a specific port, ask the cliet to filter all broadcasts (except ARPs) o the port the clock is coected to. Move the clock to a less busy etwork segmet. Etheret Optio Card Istallatio V098 Istallig ad Cofigurig the Etheret Optio Board - 7
