The MCLI was designed to develop the skills and expand the capacities of the healthcare workforce. Workshop participants will train in SIU s new Professional Development lab, which is used for educating current and future physicians using standardized patients, real-world scenarios, and state-of-the-art technology. The lab includes six patient exam rooms, equipped with viewing stations and remote recording capabilities, an SP workroom, and an SP changing room.

GENERAL INFORMATION Standardized Patients (SPs) are used throughout medical education to teach and evaluate the clinical performance and communication/interaction skills of medical students, residents and other health professional students. With the ACGME competency requirements, the USMLE Step II Clinical Skills Exam, and the increasing focus on Professionalism and Patient Safety, it has become imperative for all schools to be able to use SPs effectively. This workshop is designed to teach participants to recruit, train, and supervise the performance of SPs for both teaching and assessment. In addition to the strong focus on basic SP training skills, case/checklist development and program maintenance will be covered. The workshop will be largely experiential with SPs being trained and cases written. The workshop will culminate on the fi nal day with a dry run of the cases developed during the workshop. Attendees are encouraged to bring case ideas they would like to develop. REGISTRATION The registration fee, $950 (USD), includes the following: Resource books Training Standardized Patients to Have Physical Findings by Howard Barrows, MD; The Diagnosis and Treatment of the Failing Student (Standardized Patient Exam Failures) by Debra Klamen, MD and Reed Williams, PhD; conference syllabus and materials, dinner on Monday night and continental breakfast and lunches throughout the week.
