Setting Up the Dcking Statin System Requirements Supprted Operating Systems Windws XP Windws Vista (32-bit and 64-bit) Windws 7 (32-bit and 64-bit) Recmmended System Specificatins Kensingtn Dcking Statins can be used n netbks, laptps/laptps, and desktps running prcessrs ranging frm Intel Atm N270 t single, dual, and quad cre CPUs. Perfrmance depends n the laptp's prcessing pwer. Fr best results, we recmmend the fllwing minimum system cnfiguratin: 1.2GHz Single Cre CPU 512MB memry An available USB 2.0 prt 30MB f free disk space DVI r VGA display up t 1920 X 1200 (2048 X 1152 fr widescreen frmat) Internet access fr sftware updates In additin, fr Windws Vista systems, we recmmend a Windws Experience Index (WEI) scre f at least 3 in the "Graphics; Desktp perfrmance fr Windws Aer" categry and an verall scre f at least 3, as recmmended by Micrsft. Setup and Sftware Installatin When yu plug the Universal Ntebk Dcking Statin with VGA/DVI and Ethernet int yur laptp fr the first time, the sftware is autmatically installed. Nte: We recmmend that yu save any wrk and clse all running prgrams befre starting the installatin prcess. www.kensingtn.cm

1. Pwer the Dcking Statin Plug the pwer adapter int a wrking utlet and cnnect the ther end t the Dcking Statin's pwer adapter jack n the back panel. 2. Cnnect the USB Cable t the Dcking Statin Cnnect the "B" end f the USB cable prvided t a matching prt n the back panel f the Dcking Statin.

3. Cnnect Yur Mnitr t the Dcking Statin Plug yur mnitr's DVI cable int the DVI/VGA cnnectr n the back panel f the Dcking Statin. If yu are cnnecting a VGA display, use the DVI-t-VGA adapter included in the package. 4. Cnnect the USB Cable t Yur Ntebk Cnnect the "A" end f the USB cable t yur laptp. The sftware installatin starts autmatically within a few mments. Fllw the nscreen instructins t install the sftware. Restart yur laptp if prmpted. After successful sftware installatin, the attached mnitr is set as yur main display (shwing the Windws task bar at the bttm f the screen), and yur laptp screen is set as yur extended display (shwing yur Windws desktp). Yu can switch the main and extended displays by pressing the Dualview buttn. Yu can als set ther display cnfiguratins; see Vide Mdes. Nte: If yu d nt have a mnitr cnnected t the Dcking Statin when yu install the sftware, the Windws taskbar disappears frm yur laptp screen. If this happens, press the Dualview buttn t reset the laptp screen as yur main display. See Trubleshting fr mre infrmatin.

5. Cnnect an Ethernet Cable, USB Devices, and Audi Devices Cnnect yur netwrk cable t the Ethernet prt n the back f the Dcking Statin. Cnnect USB peripherals (fr example, keybard, muse, external hard drive, printer) t the USB prts prvided. Cnnect speakers t the rear stere audi prt and/r cnnect a headset t the frnt stere audi and micrphne prts. Using Yur Dcking Statin Yu may cnnect devices t their respective prts n the Dcking Statin while yur laptp is running. A slight delay is nrmal befre the laptp recgnizes new devices. If yu experience prblems using yur Dcking Statin, please see Trubleshting fr help. Cnnecting Devices t the USB 2.0 Prts Cnnect any USB device (fr example, keybard, muse, external hard drive, printer) t any f the Dcking Statin's five USB prts. Nte: If a USB device is cnnected t the Dcking Statin and des nt wrk as expected, test the device by cnnecting it directly t ne f yur laptp's available USB prts.

Cnnecting Yur Mnitr t the Vide Prt The Dcking Statin is equipped with ne DVI-I prt that is cmpatible with DVI, VGA, and HDMI mnitrs. T identify which type f mnitr yu have, lk at the cnnectr at the end f the cable attached t yur mnitr. DVI Mnitrs Plug a DVI cable (sld separately) int the DVI/VGA utput f the Dcking Statin. VGA Mnitrs First plug the DVI-t-VGA adapter int the DVI utput f the Dcking Statin, then plug the VGA cable int the adapter.

HDMI Mnitrs First plug the DVI-t-HDMI adapter (included with sme mdels) int the DVI utput f the Dcking Statin, then plug the HDMI cable int the adapter. Nte: If a DVI-t-HDMI adapter is nt included with yur Dcking Statin, yu must purchase ne separately t use the HDMI utput. The HDMI utput supprts the vide signal nly. Fr the audi signal, yu must use an adapter cable (sld separately) t cnnect the frnt r rear stere audi utput t external speakers r t the audi input n yur mnitr r TV. Yu can cnnect r discnnect the mnitr cable at any time withut discnnecting the Dcking Statin frm yur laptp. Yu can adjust vide settings t custmize yur use f the Dcking Statin; see Using the Task Bar Menu fr infrmatin. Nte: We recmmend that yu aut-adjust the attached mnitr nce in a while t realign its settings with the vide utput f the Dcking Statin. Refer t yur mnitr's user manual fr instructins n hw t d the aut-adjust prcedure. Ethernet Prt The Dcking Statin is equipped with 10/100 Ethernet LAN capable f supprting netwrk speeds up t 100 Mbits per secnd. Actual dwnlad and uplad speeds will depend n the speed f yur netwrk. T use, simply cnnect the Ethernet netwrk cable t the Ethernet prt n the rear f the Dcking Statin. Audi Prts The Dcking Statin is equipped with micrphne input and tw stere audi prts. The frnt audi prt is typically used fr cnnecting a headset, while the rear audi prt is typically used fr external speakers. Hwever, either prt may be used fr either purpse. The micrphne prt n the frnt is typically used fr the micrphne input n a headset r a standalne micrphne.

Audi Device Detectin The Dcking Statin's frnt and rear stere prts autmatically detect when a device is plugged in. When yu plug an audi device, such as PC speakers, int the prt, yur laptp autmatically sends the sund utput t that device. If devices are cnnected t bth stere utput prts (fr example, speakers cnnected t the rear prt and a headset cnnected t the frnt prt) the sund ges nly t the headset (frnt prt). T reactivate the speakers (rear prt), remve the headset plug frm the frnt prt. Nte: T use the micrphne prt, ne f the stere prts must have a device plugged in. In the case f a headset, bth the stere plug and the micrphne plug must be cnnected. Hwever as lng as either the frnt r rear stere prt is cnnected, the micrphne will be peratinal. Dualview Buttn The Dualview buttn n the frnt f the Dcking Statin prvides an easy way t quickly recnfigure yur displays. Switch Yur Main Display and Extended Display Press the Dualview buttn t switch whether yur laptp screen r the attached mnitr is the main display r the extended display. See Vide Mdes fr mre infrmatin Turning Off the Attached Display Press and hld the Dualview buttn fr three secnds t turn ff the attached mnitr display. Press the Dualview buttn again t turn the attached display back n. See Vide Mdes fr mre infrmatin Discnnecting Yur Dcking Statin frm Yur Ntebk T discnnect the Dcking Statin, simply unplug the USB cable frm yur laptp. Yu d nt need t shut dwn yur laptp befre discnnecting. Any windws that were pen n the attached display autmatically mve t yur laptp screen, and the attached mnitr ges blank. The Dcking Statin sftware autmatically remembers yur last cnfiguratin. S if, fr instance, yu were using the attached mnitr as yur main display, it returns t this state

when yu recnnect the Dcking Statin. Hwever, windws that were previusly pen n the attached mnitr d nt return t it. See Vide Mdes fr mre infrmatin. Warning: If yu have an external hard drive r flash drive cnnected t the Dcking Statin, t prevent data lss, make sure the drive can be safely remved befre discnnecting the Dcking Statin. Use the "Safely Remve Hardware" functin frm the taskbar befre remving the USB cable frm yur laptp. Vide Mdes Kensingtn Dcking Statins and Multi-Display Adapters increase the amunt f visible wrkspace available t yu by allwing yu t extend yur laptp's desktp nt multiple displays. When extending yur laptp's desktp t a secnd display, ne f the displays must always be the "main" r "primary" display. The Windws taskbar typically appears n the main display. The vide utput can easily be cnfigured t meet yur wrkspace needs. Yu may wish t adjust the settings based n the lcatin f the mnitr n yur desk and n yur persnal preferences. T set vide mdes, see Using the Taskbar Menu. The fllwing mdes are available: Vide Mde Attached Mnitr Ntebk Screen Best fr: Set as main mnitr Main Display Extended Display Using the attached mnitr as the main center f fcus with the laptp screen prviding additinal wrkspace Extend Extended Display Main Display Using the laptp screen as the main center f fcus with the attached mnitr prviding additinal wrkspace Ntebk mnitr ff Main Display Off Using the attached mnitr with the laptp clsed Mirrr Main Display Main Display Shwing the same infrmatin n bth displays Off Off Main Display Turning ff the attached mnitr when nt in use

In either Set as main mnitr r Extend mde, yu can drag and drp windws frm ne screen t the ther. This prvides a number f advantages t increase prductivity: Read email n ne display; pen attachments n the ther. Expand a spreadsheet acrss bth screens. Fr graphics editing, increase yur wrking area by putting all the pallets and tlbars n the secnd display. Keep yur desktp n the attached mnitr and watch a DVD n yur laptp screen. The extended display can be set t the right r left f, abve, r belw the primary display (see Using the Taskbar Menu). Set as Main Mnitr The Set as Main Mnitr ptin sets the attached mnitr as the primary display and yur laptp screen as the extended display. This allws yu t use yur large mnitr screen as yur main pint f fcus while using yur laptp screen as extra space fr ther applicatins. Extend The Extend ptin sets yur laptp screen as the primary display and the attached mnitr as the extended display. Ntebk Mnitr Off The Ntebk Mnitr ff ptin sets the attached mnitr as the primary display and turns yur laptp screen ff. Yu wuld typically use this mde when yur laptp is clsed, as with sme prprietary dcking statins. Mirrr With the Mirrr ptin, bth the laptp screen and the attached mnitr shw the same (primary) display. Nte: Ntebk and mnitr screens ften have different aspect ratis. In this case, the sftware adjusts the scale f the display s that it mst clsely matches the display f the laptp screen. If the laptp screen is a widescreen (fr example, 1280 X 800) frmat and the mnitr is a standard (1280 X 1024) frmat, the display n the standard screen shws unusable black areas abve and belw the active area. Off The Off ptin turns yur attached mnitr display ff. Any items frm this display mve back t yur laptp screen. Nte: On Dcking Statins, yu can als turn the attached mnitr display ff by pressing and hlding the Dualview buttn fr three secnds.

Using the Taskbar Menu When the Dcking Statin r Multi-Display Adapter is plugged int yur laptp, an icn appears in the Windws taskbar at the lwer-right crner f yur screen. Click this icn t bring up a menu f ptins fr cnfiguring the vide settings. Updates Sftware updates are available peridically t prvide feature imprvements. Click Check Nw t check fr updates immediately, r click Cnfigure t receive autmatic ntificatins when updates are available. Yu can als check the Kensingtn website at www.sftware.kensingtn.cm fr the latest sftware updates. Screen Reslutin Screen reslutin refers t the number f pixels displayed nscreen hrizntally and vertically. A higher reslutin means that yu can see mre f yur image n the screen withut scrlling r panning. The apprpriate reslutin t select depends n the reslutins supprted by yur mnitr. Check yur mnitr's user guide t determine what reslutins are supprted. If yur mnitr supprts a reslutin that is higher than the maximum reslutin supprted by the Dcking Statin r Multi-Display Adapter, the highest supprted reslutin is used. See Supprted Vide Settings fr a list f supprted reslutins. In mst cases, the sftware autmatically selects the mst apprpriate setting fr yur mnitr, s yu d nt need t change the setting. Hwever, if yu are using an lder mnitr r if yu wuld like t use a reslutin ther than the default, click Screen Reslutin, and then click ne f the ptins prvided.

Clr Quality Clr quality defines the number f different clrs that can be shwn n the screen at the same time. The greater the clr quality, the better the picture quality.

Screen Rtatin The picture n yur screen may be rtated as required. Fr instance, if yur attached mnitr is physically rtated t the left (cunterclckwise) fr viewing in prtrait mde, click Rtated Left t adjust the picture n the display. Vide Mde Optins Frm the menu, click the vide mde yu want: Extend Set as main mnitr Ntebk mnitr ff Mirrr Off See Vide Mdes fr a descriptin f each mde.

Nte: Clicking Extend T allws yu t select whether the extended display appears t the right f, t the left f, abve, r belw the primary display. This autmatically puts yur cnfiguratin in Extend mde. T use the Extend T ptin in Set as main mnitr mde, click Extend T, click the ptin yu want fr the extended display, and then click Set as main mnitr. Nte: Clicking Advanced pens yur laptp's Windws Display Prperties.

A higher reslutin means that yu can see mre f yur image n the screen withut scrlling r panning. Clr depth defines the number f different clrs that can be shwn n the screen at the same time. The greater the clr depth, the better the picture quality. Refresh rate (als called vertical frequency) measures the speed that the entire screen is rescanned. Higher frequencies reduce flicker, because they light the pixels mre frequently, reducing the dimming that causes flicker. Uninstalling the Sftware 1. On yur laptp, pen the Cntrl Panel and click Add r Remve Prgrams (Windws XP) r Prgrams and Features(Windws Vista). 2. Find and select Kensingtn Display Adapter in the list f prgrams. 3. Click Remve (Windws XP) r Uninstall (Windws Vista). Nte: We recmmend that yu restart yur laptp after uninstalling the sftware.

Securing Yur Dcking Statin Yu can use the Kensingtn security slt t cnnect a Kensingtn Lck (sld separately) t secure yur Dcking Statin by lcking it t yur desk. See the user manual f the K-Lck device fr further instructins n hw t use the device. Trubleshting If yur Dcking Statin des nt perate as expected, first check these items t try and crrect the prblem. If the prblem persists, please cntact Kensingtn Technical Supprt. See Technical Supprt. Hw Standby r Hibernate Mde Affects Devices Attached t the Dcking Statin Attached Mnitrs When the Dcking Statin is cnnected t a laptp and an attached mnitr, if the laptp ges int Standby r Hibernate Mde, the attached mnitr display ges blank. Nte: Depending n yur laptp settings, the laptp might g int Standby r Hibernate Mde when yu clse the lid. When the laptp returns t an active state, the attached mnitr display keeps the same settings it had befre the laptp went int Standby r Hibernate Mde. Hwever, if the attached mnitr was set t shw the extended display, windws that were previusly n the attached mnitr d nt mve back t that secndary mnitr. Als, if the attached mnitr is shwing the extended display and the laptp requires a lgin after Standby r Hibernate Mde, the lgin screen appears n bth primary laptp screen and n the attached mnitr.

Other Devices If anther device is cnnected t a prt n the Dcking Statin and the laptp ges int Standby r Hibernate Mde, that device will nt functin. Fr example, if yu are using a USB 2.0 prt t cnnect an external USB device, the device will nt be available until the laptp returns t an active state. General The Dcking Statin pwer/cnnectin indicatr is nt "n" (amber r green). Check t be sure that the pwer adapter is plugged int the Dcking Statin and int a wrking electrical utlet. D nt use any adapters ther than the ne supplied with the Dcking Statin. My laptp will nt "cnnect" t the Dcking Statin, and the light f the pwer/cnnectin indicatr light is amber. Unplug the USB 2.0 cable frm yur laptp, wait at least five secnds, and then reinsert the USB 2.0 cable. If the prblem persists, try cnnecting the USB 2.0 cable t a different USB 2.0 prt n yur laptp. Vide Output The display n my mnitr is blank. Make sure that the laptp cnnected t the Dcking Statin is running prperly and is nt in Standby r Hibernate Mde. When the laptp is in Standby and Hibernate Mde, the mnitr display is always blank. Make sure that the USB 2.0 cable is inserted crrectly in yur laptp, the cable is cnnected t the Dcking Statin, and the pwer adapter is cnnected t the Dcking Statin and t a wrking pwer utlet. Make sure that the vide cable is securely cnnected t the vide utput and is secured with the fixing screws n bth sides. Make sure that the sftware has been installed fllwing the installatin steps. The Kensingtn icn fr yur Dcking Statin shuld be visible in the system tray. Make sure that yu did nt disable the vide utput by accidentally pressing and hlding the Dualview buttn fr mre than three secnds r by selecting Off in the taskbar menu. T check, press the Dualview buttn and see if the display reappears. If the prblem persists, discnnect the Dcking Statin frm yur laptp. Remve the pwer adapter frm the Dcking Statin. Recnnect the pwer adapter t the Dcking Statin and the USB cable t the laptp. When I am in Extended mde and I am playing back vide clips, nly ne vide clip can be seen. When in Extended mde, nly ne vide playback applicatin can be used at a time. If multiple vide clips are being played, nly ne vide clip is visible t the userñthe thers are blacked ut. This is true fr web pages with embedded vide clips als: Yu can nly view

ne such web page at a time. T view multiple web pages with embedded vide clips, view ne page in the laptp screen and the ther n the attached mnitr. With Windws Vista I cannt play back vide clips n my attached mnitr. On Windws Vista systems, sme vide clips cannt be played n the attached mnitr when it is set as the extended display. T play these vide clips, mve the vide applicatin t yur laptp screen. Kensingtn regularly updates vide playback supprt in extended mde; check the Kensingtn website fr sftware updates. When I clse the lid f my laptp, the display n the attached mnitr ges blank. By default, mst the laptps g int Standby r Hibernate Mde when the lid is clsed. This turns ff the display n an attached mnitr. T change the Standby/Hibernate setting, d the fllwing: 1. Open the Cntrl Panel and click Pwer Optins. 2.
