Welcome to your new university accommodation and to unlimited free internet. Here s a handy guide to help you get your computer, tablet or phone connected. Most rooms have wired internet access and all rooms have wireless access. The wireless network is called eduroam. Wi-Fi is available across most parts of the campus and you can even connect to eduroam at most other universities. We hope you find this guide helpful and that you have a very comfortable and enjoyable year in your new accommodation. The CiCS team. Your University username and password Connect to the wired internet You ll get a University username during the pre-registration process and will choose your own password. Your University username is 3 letters, 2 numbers, then 2 or 3 letters, for example mja13xz. You use this username to log into all our services, but in order to connect to wireless, you need to add @sheffield.ac.uk, so it takes the format mja13xz@sheffield.ac.uk Never tell anyone your university password As soon as you re a fully registered student, you will no longer need your pre-registration username and password and will be able to safely forget them, but hang onto these for now as they may come in handy. username password Let s get started! Plug your cable into the wall socket and into your computer 1. Switch on your computer and start up your favourite web browser 2. If it doesn t redirect automatically, go to http://csrs.shef.ac.uk 3. Click the link to register and fill out the form 4. Shut down your computer, wait 5 minutes and restart it You should now be connected and can browse anywhere. Still having problems? See page 16 for the ways we can help. You should find a network cable in your room. If you can t see it, try the drawers. If you need a new one, head to the reception desk at either The Edge or The Ridge, where Accommodation and Commercial Services (ACS) will be able to help. 4 5
Connect your PC to the wireless internet Windows 8 To help you connect a Windows 8 PC to our wireless network, we provide an installer. If you haven t got the installer, plug your computer into the network socket and download it from http://csrs.shef.ac.uk. If you don t have a cable or socket see p19 for manual instructions. Got the installer? 1. Right-click it and select run 2. When asked, enter your University username followed by @sheffield.ac.uk 3. Enter your password twice as prompted and click Install. 4. To connect, click the wireless icon, select eduroam and click Connect 5. You can safely ignore eduroam (TKIP) Can t connect? See page 19 to connect Windows 8 manually Windows 7 It s really easy to connect a Windows 7 PC to our wireless network: 1. Click the wireless icon in the task bar 2. From the menu select eduroam 3. When the dialogue box appears type in your University username followed by @sheffield.ac.uk 4. Enter your password and click Connect 5. If you are asked to specify the type of network select work Connect another type of PC For Linux or older version of Windows, connect your PC to the wired network as described on page 4 then go to www.shef.ac.uk/cics/wireless for instructions on connecting your PC to wireless. 6 7
Connect your Mac to the wireless internet Need a hand getting connected? When you start up your Mac in your room it should detect our wireless network, eduroam, and ask you to log in. If this happens, log in with your University username followed by @sheffield.ac.uk and your password. If your Mac does not automatically detect eduroam it s still easy to connect: Click the wireless icon and ensure that Wi-Fi is switched on Click the wireless icon again and select eduroam from the list of available networks Type in your University username followed by @sheffield.ac.uk Enter your password and click Join or OK You should now be connected to the eduroam wireless network. Smartphones and tablets Mobile apps Connect your smartphone or tablet to the wireless internet The unlimited free internet access goes for phones and tablets too. Make sure your Wi-Fi is turned on and in your Wi-Fi settings select eduroam from the list of networks. You ll need to enter your username followed by @sheffield.ac.uk, and then enter your password. More detailed instructions for connecting all kinds of devices, from iphones to Kindles, can be found at www.shef.ac.uk/cics/ smartphones Online gaming is allowed in University residences but support is limited. You will need to use a wired connection to connect your console. See www.shef.ac.uk/cics/gaming for more info We work with Google to provide Mail, Calendar and other apps, so use the web browser on your device to access m.google.com. From here you can download Google Mail, Calendar and Sync apps to integrate with our services. We also provide two mobile apps for students: isheffield is the University s mobile app for Sheffield students. It lets you reserve a computer or laptop, and features timetable information, library reading lists, campus maps, printer locations and more. You can download it here: www.shef.ac.uk/cics/isheffield Blackboard Learn is the online learning app which gives you access to our MOLE online learning environment, letting you interact with tutors and peers and receive notification of content changes. www.shef.ac.uk/cics/mole/app 10 11
Online Services Computers for Students Now you re connected, you can log into MUSE (My University of Sheffield Environment) to access all our online services, including MOLE, Google Apps, Library Services and more. MUSE Click the Log in to MUSE link at the top of any University webpage. MOLE, the University s Virtual Learning Environment, is the starting point for all of your academic work. You will find module specific content as well as other learning resources. www.shef.ac.uk/cics/mole Google Apps are used to provide your University email, calendar and other tools. www.shef.ac.uk/cics/google Library Services can be accessed online too, including the library catalogue StarPlus and your course reading lists. www.shef.ac.uk/library/intro We have over 1700 computers, packed with software and available in rooms around campus. So if you didn t bring your own desktop or laptop computer to University, or you don t want to bring your laptop onto campus, it s not a problem. Laptop loans We have lots of laptops available to loan. See www.shef.ac.uk/cics/laptoploans for more information. Book a laptop in advance You can just turn up and use a PC or laptop or you can book one in advance. You can even reserve a computer on your phone using the isheffield app. For more info about University computers, including locating available computers, and booking PCs and laptops in advance, see: www.shef.ac.uk/cics/computers The Information Commons is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The IC has 500 computers plus 50 laptops available for loan. 12 13
Printing Saving files Our pre-pay printing system lets you send jobs to a printer from your own laptop or desktop computer as well as from University computers. To print, you swipe your University membership card (UCard) at a printer and choose which of your stored jobs you wish to print. You can add credit to your account using online card payments or value loading kiosks, which are all around campus. For full details on the student printing service see: www.shef.ac.uk/cics/printing We have two easy options for you to save your work. University Filestore is managed by CiCS and gives you plenty (2GB) of fast, secure storage. It is the place where your work is saved when using any University computers. You can also easily move files between University Filestore and your personal computer using the myfilestore application found in MUSE. We also offer Google Drive, which is a fast and secure cloud storage service. It gives you up to 30GB of space to store, view and edit your University work and emails. There are also mobile apps for ios and Android so you can access your work from your phone or tablet. It is cheaper to print using the University printers than to keep a personal printer stocked with ink and paper. Don t store your files as email attachments, and always save email attachments before you edit them. The biggest cause of students losing work is something going wrong when editing email attachments without saving them first. 14 15

Stay Safe Online Connect Windows 8 manually Students are sometimes targeted by criminals who want to get their hands on student loans. They might try to trick you into giving out your passwords or bank details. What to do: Watch our video at www.shef.ac.uk/cics/students to learn how to stay safe online. If you think you have received a phishing email, don t respond or click on any of the links in the message. Forward the message to phishing@sheffield.ac.uk for further investigation. For more information about online security, including links to free anti virus software and our video about phishing, see: www.shef.ac.uk/cics/security If you don t have access to the wired network, you can still connect your Windows 8 PC to the wireless network. This should take two minutes and you only have to do this the first time; once set up you will always connect when in range. 1. From the new Metro Start screen click Desktop 2. Right-click on the wireless icon in the bottom right of the desktop and select Open Network and Sharing Centre 3. Select Set up a new connection or network 4. Select Manually connect to a wireless network and click Next 5. Enter the following details: Network name: eduroam Security type: WPA2-Enterprise Encryption type: AES 6. Click Next, then change connection settings 7. Select the Security tab and click Settings 8. Tick the box labelled Connect to these servers and type eduroam.shef.ac.uk in the box below 9. In the Trusted Root Certification Authorities: window tick the box labelled AddTrust External CA Root and click OK 10. Click Advanced Settings 11. Tick the box labelled Specify authentication mode and select User authentication from the drop-down menu 12. Click OK, OK again and Close. You are now ready to connect! 13. Click on the wireless signal icon in the bottom right of the desktop. 14. Select eduroam and press Connect 15. When asked, enter your University username (remember to include @sheffield.ac.uk) and your password and click OK. You should now be connected to the eduroam wireless network. 18 19
