3 Overview Canterbury College offers Wi-Fi Service via the eduroam network framework. This enables visitors to use their personal devices such as laptops and mobile phones via Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet and selected other IT Services. It also allows Canterbury College members who visit other participating establishments to log on to eduroam and access a sub-set of Canterbury College ICT services remotely. Visitors from participating eduroam institutions Using your eduroam credentials (network login details from your home Institution) you can access applications and services offered by your home institution. Your ICT department should be able to brief you on how to connect to eduroam and which services your home institution offers. However, should you experience technical difficulties; you may contact the Canterbury College IT Service Desk. Canterbury College Staff & Students As long as you have a valid Canterbury College network log on, you should be able to access the eduroam network. If you do not, please fill in a new account form available from the College intranet and return it to the IT Service Desk. Please see below for the IT Service Desk contact details. Non-eduroam guests If you wish to gain Internet access during your visit to Canterbury College, you may obtain temporary guest account details from our IT Service Desk (see below for contact details). Regulations and terms of use You are obliged to read and abide by the Canterbury College IT Acceptable Use Policy & Canterbury College eduroam Acceptable use Policy. Both are available from Network Coverage The Wi-Fi network is now available across the entire College campus including the grass areas at the front of the College grounds and including the Swale campus. Equipment Requirements Laptop with wireless capabilities System requirements: Windows XP and above or Mac OS 10.4 and above are supported. 4 College Service Desk (more information can be found at JANET Roaming Service wireless connections: Laptop should be fully protected from viruses (Up-to Date Virus protection) Mobile devices must support WPA Enterprise authentication. It is possible to connected mobile devices such as iphones, however these are not support by the Canterbury College Service Desk. Setup Instructions Setting up connections Once you have followed the instructions below to connect to the eduroam network the configuration will be saved on your laptop or device. The next time your device should connect automatically. Windows 7 Before connecting If you have enabled internet connection sharing on your PC this must be turned off before you connect each time you use the Wireless Service. If it is not turned off, it prevents others from connecting, and may result in your connection being terminated at any time without notice. Disable internet connection sharing 1. Click the Start/Windows Orb button (bottom left of screen), then Control Panel. 2. Under Network and Sharing Center, then click View network connections 3. Click on the network Connection, then click Properties or Click on manage Network then click Adapter Properties. 4. Click Sharing tab, then Un-tick the Allow other network users to connect through this computer s Internet connection check box, and click OK. Connect to Wi-Fi Go to a wireless zone on campus and check that your wireless adapter is turned on. It is recommended that you use the Windows Wireless Configuration software to configure your Laptop. 1. Click the Start button, then Control Panel, then Network and Sharing Centre. 2. Click Add button and click manually create a network profile: In the Network name box type eduroam select WPA-Enterprise from the Security type drop-down list ensure the Encryption type is set to TKIP Tick the Start this connection automatically box all other settings should remain as they are. Click Next 4. Click Change connection settings Tick the Connect automatically when this network is in range box Un-tick the Connect to a more preferred network if available box Un-tick the Connect even if the network is not broadcasting box. Click Security tab: ensure that Security type is set to WPA-Enterprise ensure that Encryption type is set to AES ensure the Choose a network authentication method is set to Protected EAP (PEAP) Un-tick the box marked Remember my credentials for this connection each time I m logged on. 6. Click Advanced Settings and select User Authentication in the Specify Authentication mode drop down box. Click OK to return to Security Tab. 7. Click the Setting s button: Un-tick the box marked Validate server certificate 8. Click Configure then Un-tick automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any). Click OK to return to the Manually connect to a wireless network box and click Close. 9. Click the message that appears at the bottom right of your screen labelled. Additional information is required to connect... (If this does not appear Click on your wireless icon (near the clock) and select the eduroam network) Enter your full username in this format jbloggs@canterburycollege.ac.uk (replacing jbloggs with your own username; visitors should use their home institution details in place of canterburycollege.ac.uk) Enter your password and click OK to connect. This is now set-up on your Windows 7 device and the configuration is saved, next time you want to log on just need to click on you wireless connections and connect to the eduroam network. 7 Windows XP Before connecting If you have enabled internet connection sharing on your PC this must be turned off before you connect each time you use the Wireless Service. If it is not turned off, it prevents others from connecting, and may result in your connection being terminated at any time without notice. Disable internet connection sharing 1. Click Start, then Control Panel (if you see Pick a Category at the top of the window, click Switch to Classic View on the left of the window). 2. Double-click Network Connections. 3 Click For each network connection, right-click the connection and. Properties. 4. Connect to Wi-Fi Go to a wireless zone on campus and check that your wireless adapter is turned on (either a switch on the side or a key on the keyboard with a wireless symbol; usually a light indicates when it is on). It is recommended that you use the Windows Wireless Configuration software to configure your Laptop. 1. Click Start, Control Panel (or Start, Settings, Control Panel). Click the Wireless Networks tab, then Add (to see the Wireless Network Properties window): Type eduroam in the Network name (SSID) field Select WPA in the Network Authentication field Select AES in the Data encryption field. 4. Click the Authentication tab: Tick Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network if it is not already ticked change the EAP type to Protected EAP (PEAP) Un-tick Authenticate as computer and Authenticate as guest. 9 5. Click Properties Un-tick the 'Validate server certificate' Choose Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAPv2) from the Select Authentication Method drop-down list. 6. Click Configure, Un-tick the Automatically use my Windows logon name box, then click OK. 7. Ensure eduroam appears at the top of the Preferred Networks box. If required, click the eduroam entry and click Move up. 8. Click on the. Advanced button (bottom right). Ensure that Access point (infrastructure) networks only has been checked, then click Close. Your wireless access is now more secure. 9. Click OK (in the Wireless Network Connections Properties window that is still open). Click the bubble that appears in the bottom-right of the screen Enter your full username in this format (Replacing jbloggs with your own username; visitors should use their home institution details in place of canterburycollege.ac.uk) Enter your password (Ignore logon domain and click OK or press Enter on your keyboard) CANTERBURY COLLEGE EDUROAM WI-FI GUIDE - SEPTEMBER

10 Eduroam is now set-up on your Windows XP device and the configuration is saved. The next time you want to log on just need to click on you wireless connections and connect to the eduroam network. Apple Mac OSX Before connecting If you have enabled internet connection sharing on your Mac, this must be turned off before you connect each time you use the Wireless Service. If it is not turned off, it prevents others from connecting, and may result in your connection being terminated at any time without notice. Disable internet connection sharing 1. Click the Apple menu, then System Preferences, Sharing (under Internet and Wireless). 2. Un-tick Internet Sharing in the list of services on the left hand side of the window. Close Window. Connect to Wi-Fi Go to a wireless zone on campus and enable the AirPort (wireless network card) on your Mac. 1. Open the AirPort menu and select eduroam. If eduroam is not listed: Apple Macintosh 10.5 and 10.6 users: select Join other network, type eduroam as the network name and select WPA Enterprise in the security field. Apple Macintosh 10.4 users: select other and type eduroam as the network name. 2. Enter your full username in this format jbloggs@canterburycollege.ac.uk (replacing jbloggs with your own username; visitors should use their home institution details in place of canterburycollege.ac.uk), password, and click OK to connect. Eduroam is now set-up on your Apple Mac device and the configuration is saved. The next time you want to log on just need to click on you wireless connections and connect to the eduroam network. 11 Wireless Connection Problems FAQ I can t see any wireless networks on my Laptop Check that the wireless adapter is turned on. It can be turned on either by a slider on the top or side of a laptop, or via a function key on the keyboard (sometimes both) Wireless networks tab is not present or is greyed out Open up the wireless adapters configuration program and set the option to let Windows configure the wireless adapter. In some cases the windows configuration software is referred to as Zero Configuration Utility. It is recommended that you use the Windows Wireless Configuration software to configure your Laptop. Apple Macintosh connection problems Turn the Airport off and on again (click the AirPort menu top right of your screen). If you continue to have problems please contact the Service Desk Unable to get an IP address on your Mac?
