1. Introduction All connections to the University student network are controlled by the ResNet security service. This service checks that all devices connecting to the network have appropriate security software and meet a minimum set of requirements. When first connecting your device it will be scanned to confirm that the operating system is up to date and a suitable anti-virus application is installed with the latest anti-virus definitions. No personal data is scanned at any time. This process applies to all students whether in halls or using the wireless network elsewhere on campus. The guide is based on a Windows platform but applies to Apple Mac and mobile device users as well. If you own a tablet, smartphone or other mobile device, you will need to complete the wireless setup before continuing with the ResNet security checks detailed below. Please refer to Appendix A for these instructions. The initial connection process has three parts: 1) Agreeing to the University ICT Acceptable Use policy; 2) Authentication and registration to allow access to the network; 3) Security scan to check that your device s operating system, anti-virus and anti-spyware software are up to date, including resolving any problems identified. If you have been able to scan your computer remotely before arrival, you should be able to connect to the University ResNet very quickly. If you do not have the most recent updates for your operating system, anti-spyware and antivirus, you will fail the security scans and will be unable to connect to the internet. After 60 days from the last scan, the University requires all users to re-check and apply any updates and patches this is to protect the health of your device, others and the University systems. In most cases, the process should not take very long to complete. Note for owners of Microsoft Windows XP devices: the University no longer permits any XP device to connect to the University network. Wireless printers: Note that students own wireless printers cannot be used with the ResNet wireless network. This is because most wireless printers do not have the capabilities to connect to eduroam (802.1X settings are needed). Wireless printers also lack the security settings necessary for a shared network, and this would mean that any user on the network would be able to print to the printer. Version 5 - July 2015 IT Services Page 4
2. Initial connection Switch on your device and connect either via Wi-Fi or the network cable in your room. For Wi- Fi, make sure you have followed the instructions in Appendix A before starting this part of the process. Wait for 60 seconds and then attempt to connect to the internet using an internet browser (for example, Internet Explorer). If you cannot connect or get a blank page, contact the University IT Helpdesk on On connection, the Acceptable Use Policy page will be displayed. Read the policy carefully and confirm that you agree to abide by the University ICT usage regulations by clicking the Agree button. On accepting the policy, the Network Registration page will be displayed. Version 5 - July 2015 IT Services Page 5
3. Network Registration For initial connection of your device, click Start against the Register my computer option. Fill in the relevant information including your University username and password, then click DOWNLOAD. Version 5 - July 2015 IT Services Page 6
Note for smartphone and tablet users (including Microsoft Surface RT or Microsoft Surface 2), the process completes at this point. If you are using an Apple Mac or Windows PC/laptop (including Microsoft Surface Pro), please continue to follow the instructions below. You will see the SUCCESS window and after a 30 second countdown restart your browser by clicking OK. Version 5 - July 2015 IT Services Page 7
4. Network registration: Scanning your computer (network remediation) After restarting the browser, your device will be connected to a network remediation page. From here you must download and run the scanning app and access web pages to enable software updates to your operating system and security software, if required. Download Agent Click the Download button and then select Run in the File Download Security Warning dialog box to install the dissolvable app software (this software is self-deleting once it has been run, so nothing is permanently installed on your computer). Version 5 - July 2015 IT Services Page 8
If you see a security warning, click on RUN ANYWAY. You will see the scan progress indicator. Version 5 - July 2015 IT Services Page 9
5. System check results Once the scan is complete, you will be presented with either a FAILED or SUCCESS window. Failure Devices that fail the security scan will be directed to the Failed Test page. All steps must be completed before the scan will be successful. Click on each blue link in turn to resolve the failure shown. Once you have successfully completed each of the failed tests, return to the download page (which will still be open) to download the dissolvable app and re-scan your device for the last time. Version 5 - July 2015 IT Services Page 10
Successful scan When you have passed all the checks and re-scanned, you will see the SUCCESS window. You MUST wait for the countdown to finish; once this has completed you will be connected to the internet. If you have gone through each link and the security checks are still failing, telephone the IT Services Helpdesk on or visit us at the Helpdesk in Main Building room 26 on the King Alfred Campus. We recommend you set your device to automatically download all updates on a weekly basis to avoid issues with security and performance. If you are unsure how to do this, visit this link for Microsoft devices and look at the Check your settings section. For all other platforms, please refer to your operating instructions for guidance. After 60 days from the last scan, the University requires all users to re-check and apply any updates and patches this is to protect the health of your device, others and the University systems. In most cases, the process should not take very long to complete. Version 5 -July 2015 IT Services Page 11
6. Registering a games console The following games consoles may be registered: Wii, Wii U, PlayStation 2, 3 or 4, Xbox One and 360, TiVo, Replay TV Note that only hardwired consoles (not wireless) can be registered at this time. Use this link (or copy and paste into a browser) and follow the instructions on the screen. Version 5 -July 2015 IT Services Page 12
7. Frequently Asked Questions Q - Why do I have to do this? A - It is very important that any device connected to the University network does not have any viruses or malware which could infect the network and reduce performance for other users. It is also important that device operating systems (eg. Windows or Apple Mac OS X) are kept updated, as these updates frequently fix security issues. Q - What are you scanning for on my PC? A - This process only scans for the presence of a valid and up-to-date anti-virus and malware application. No personal data is scanned at any time. Q When I try to download the scanning software, Norton is showing it as a virus? A Right click on the Norton icon and select disable, download the scanning software then reenable Norton. Now run the scanning software. As your device is not connected to the general network it is perfectly safe to disable Norton temporarily. Q I have downloaded all the updates displayed, but the scan is still failing? A On a Microsoft Windows PC, open Control Panel and look for Windows Update. Check that the settings are correct for major updates (Service Packs) to install. For other platforms and devices, please check that all updates have been accepted and installed. If you continue to have problems, call the University IT Helpdesk on or visit us in Main Building room 26. Q My device is asking me to re-scan? A After 60 days from the last scan, the University requires all users to re-check and apply any updates and patches this is to protect the health of your device, others and the University systems. In most cases, the process should not take very long to complete. Q The network cable in my room is broken what do I need to do? A Please contact the IT Helpdesk on or visit us in Main Building room 26 we will install a new cable for you as quickly as possible. Q My mobile phone signal is very poor? What can you do to help? A Unfortunately the mobile telephone coverage is mainly out of the University's control, and the hilly terrain of the campus makes mobile telephone signals very intermittent. (Please don t confuse the mobile network with our Wi-Fi signal). Version 5 -July 2015 IT Services Page 13
APPENDIX A Wi-Fi set up for mobile devices Before starting the security scan detailed from page 5 of this guide, if you are using a mobile device via Wi-Fi, you must set up your Wi-Fi access first.
