1 Information Technology Services eduroam wireless setup guide for Windows 7, XP and Vista Configuring Windows to connect to the eduroam wireless network June 2011 Introduction This document describes how to connect a Windows XP or Windows Vista computer to the eduroam wireless network while on campus at RMIT For further information about the network, please refer the RMIT Wireless web page: Preparation Before beginning your wireless configuration, please check the following: Ensure that your eduroam ID is active and in the correct format. Contact your home institution for any queries about the status of your account. Obtain administrator access to the computer Instructions for Windows users Downloading and installing the SecureW2 client Step 1. Connect to the internet via an alternative wired or wireless network, such as RMIT- Support Step 2. Open Internet Explorer, and go to the RMIT eduroam guides and resource page : Step 3. Click on the SecureW2 client link to download SecureW2. Save the file to a known location on your computer Step 4. Double click on the downloaded file to install SecureW2 The installation will continue automatically. If you are using Windows XP, you will be prompted to restart your computer Step 5. 2 Creating the network profile Windows XP Follow these instructions only if you have the Windows XP operating system. Windows Vista/7 users should skip to the Windows Vista/7 section Step 1. Click the Start menu, then open Control Panel Step 2. If the Pick a Category heading displays, click Network and Internet Connections Icons differ depending on your Control Panel view. Then, under the Pick a control panel icon heading, click Network Connections. Network Connections icon from category view. Otherwise, open Network Connections Network Connections icon from classic view. Step 3. In the Network Connections window, right-click on Wireless Connection icon and select Properties Step 4. Click the Wireless Networks tab and then click Add The Wireless network properties screen displays with the Association tab in the foreground. Step 5. Type eduroam for Network name (SSID) Step 6. Select WPA for Network Authentication, and AES for Data encryption Page 2 of 8

3 Step 7. Click the Authentication tab Step 8. On the Authentication tab, select SecureW2TTLS for EAP type Step 9. Click Properties The SecureW2 configuration window opens. To continue, follow the instructions in the Configuring the SecureW2 Client section below Page 3 of 8

4 Windows Vista Follow these instructions only if you have the Windows Vista operating system: Step 10. Click the Start menu, Control Panel, Network and Internet. Step 11. Click Network and Sharing Center Step 12. Click Manage Wireless Networks from the left hand menu Step 13. Click Add Accessing wireless network management. There may not be any wireless networks configured as yet. Page 4 of 8

5 Step 14. Click Manually create a network profile Step 15. Type eduroam for Network name Step 16. Select WPA2- Enterprise for Security type Step 17. Select AES for Encryption type Step 18. Click Next Figure 1. Configuring security and encryption types. Page 5 of 8

6 Step 19. After successful addition of the eduroam Profile, select Change Connection Settings Further configuration is required. The eduroam wireless network properties screen displays. Step 20. Click the Security tab, and select SecureW2 EAP- TTLS for the network authentication method Step 21. Click Settings. The SecureW2 Configuration window will open Step 22. To continue, follow the instructions in the Configuring the SecureW2 Client in this document Accessing other configuration options. Configuring the SecureW2 client If you download SecureW2 from the RMIT website it will come with an eduroam profile already configured. Page 6 of 8

7 Select eduroam from the profile dropdown in the SecureW2 window and click ok. Skip the rest of this section and continue from the Connecting to the eduroam network section. If you already have SecureW2 installed from another source, or need to setup a profile again, refer to the following steps. Step 1. If it is not already open, launch the SecureW2 client from your start menu. Step 2. Select the Profile from the dropdown box you wish to configure. You can also add a new profile by clicking on new. Step 2. Confirm your Secure W2 client has the following settings on each of the four tabs as follows: Connections tab: Use alternate outer identity unticked Certificates tab : Verify server certificate unticked Authentication tab : Inner authentication set to PAP User account tab: Prompt user for credentials ticked. Step 3. Continue to the next section Connecting to the eduroam wireless network. 1.1 Connecting to the eduroam wireless network Step 1. Activate the wireless device according to the manufacturer s instructions This may be a physical switch on the PC or card. In a few seconds, a pop-up information balloon for the eduroam network should appear in the System Tray, the area at the bottom right of screen. Step 2. Click on the information balloon and the login window will appear Page 7 of 8

8 Step 3. Enter your eduroam ID Step 4. Enter your eduroam password You have the choice here of ticking Save user credentials: If you do not enable this option, you will have to re-authenticate every time to reconnect to the wireless network If you do enable this option, then the PC will be able to automatically authenticate and connect to the wireless network when at RMIT. Step 5. At this point you should now be connected to the eduroam wireless network.
