1 Working from home If you are planning to work from home or your laptop, there are several things you need to have access to: EndNote Word Your Home Area (M:\ - the UiO server where you have your files). Literature databases (to be able to read Full-text articels and download references). There are several ways to access The universityʹs resources from home 1. Via UiOʹs Program Kiosk 2. Via Remote desktop Access via UiOʹs Program Kiosk Advantages of using Kiosk You can access your EndNote-library and Word documentens from any computer in the world that has a network connection. The computer you work from does not need to have either EndNote or Word installed. You have access to your Home area (M:\) and if you keep your working files there you get the added benefit of backup several times a day. Acessing EndNote via UiOs Program Kiosk Accessing EndNote from UiO Program Kiosk is different on Windows, Mac (also ipad) and Linux. If you want to use Kiosk with other operating systems than Windows, go to Here, we only describe the procedure for Windows:

2 1. Go to with Internet Explorer (Kiosk is only compatible with this browser). 2. The first time you do this you will get two warnings: ʹThis webpage wants to run the Following add-on...ʹ press ʹAllowʹ twice. 3. Log in with your University username and password. 4. If a window with the user name of your local computer shows up, or you have problems logging in, select ʺOther userʺ and enter UIO\username and password. 5. You are now inside the UiO Program Kiosk, and youʹll see many different applications as icons - click on the EndNote icon. 6. If a RemoteApp-window pops up, tick the ʹDo not ask me again...ʹ-box and click on ʹConnectʹ. 7. Wait until EndNote starts (if EndNote does not start up after a minute, press the EndNote icon again, usually EndNote start after a few seconds). 8. If a box containing ʹEndNote Webʹ shows up, click ʹCancelʹ in the bottom right corner. 9. Choose ʹCreate a new Libraryʹ or ʹOpen an existing libraryʹ if you already have an EndNote library. 10. If you create a new library, make sure you save it to your Home area (M:\). Click ʹLibraries ->Documentsʹ in the left menu of the ʹNew Reference Libraryʹ window that appears as you click ʹCreate a new Libraryʹ and you will save your library in the My Documents folder on your Home area. 11. We recommend strongly that you only have one library for all your documents. In that way, you can reuse references. which is very useful. Accessing Word via UiOʹs Program Kiosk Word and other programs are accessible through Kiosk After you have started EndNote from Kiosk, go back to Kiosk and click the Word icon. When Word has finished loading, look for the tab called ʹEndNoteʹ in the upper right of the menu.

3 As with your EndNote library, remember to save all your Word documents on your Home area (M:\). Accessing your Home area (M:\) via UiOʹs Program Kiosk If you need to browse your Home area, click the ʹExplorerʹ icon (the yellow folder) in Kiosk. You will see that the ʹDocumentsʹ folder shows files on the server and not your local computer. Accessing Literature Databases via UiOʹs Program Kiosk If you try to access some of the Databases from a computer outside the UiO Network, many of the services like Full Text and Reference downloads will not be available to you. To get the same access to the literature databases as you do on the Campus network, you must access these databases via ʺInternet Explorerʺ on Kiosk. That means opening Internet Explorer again, within Kiosk. It is very important that EndNote, Word and Internet Explorer all are started from Kiosk if Kiosk is to be used Note that the icons on the taskbar started via Kiosk look different, they have a small green icon in the bottom. Make sure both Word, EndNote and Internet Explorer (if you want to download references from databases) have this symbol. If you for example start EndNote from Kiosk and Word from your own computer instead from Kiosk, this will create problems since these programs need to communicate with each other. This is also true for Internet Explorer if you want to import references into EndNote from the Databases.

4 This is how the taskbar will look on Windows 7 when all programs are started from Kiosk, note the small green icon in the bottom right of each program icon: Get the Kiosk programs on your start menu It is possible to get the programs of Kiosk to show on your start menu like other installed programs on your computer. Access via Remote Desktop Benefits of using Remote Desktop You have access to your EndNote library and Word documents from any pc in the world that has Internet connection. Your computer does not need to have Word or EndNote installed. You can access your home area (M:\ ) with backup every day. Since the Remote Desktop-session is on another computer, you wonʹt mix the programs and documents you use for work with the local programs on your own computer like what may happen with Kiosk. Logging on through Remote Desktop is like logging on to a University campus Windows machine. You get your own desktop and home directory. You can also access the services available at the University. To start a Remote Desktop session on a Windows computer, click the Start menu -> All programs -> Accessories (Accessories) -> Remote Desktop Connection. In the

5 computer field, type: win.uio.no. In the box that pops up, type UIO\username and password (note UIO and backslash in front of the user name). Making remote desktop connection from Linux and Mac is more complex, the description on how to do this can be found here:
