School Leavers What you do when you leave school is a pretty big decision and it will have an impact on the rest of your life. We aim to help you make the right decision by offering impartial advice and guidance from our Learner Services Team. At College you will be treated as an adult in a friendly and supportive environment. Your student years should be the best of your life, and we aim to ensure you have fun while you study. Adults As an adult returning to education or continuing on to Higher Education you may feel a bit uneasy about taking those first steps. If you have any concerns, you can book a confidential interview with a Careers and Progression Advisor. A large number of our full-time learners are mature learners so you will fit in straight away. The friendly support of Careers and Progression Advisors and Progression Coaches will also soon make you feel at home. Our aim is to give you the support you need to gain the job-related skills and self-confidence required for a successful career. What else will I learn? South Staffordshire College is firmly committed to helping all of our learners to progress in life as well as achieving to the best of their abilities in their study. Consequently, our courses and the environments in which you are taught have been developed to help give you the skills and experience that you will need when you start your working life. However, many personal skills and experiences are required in the world of work which are not specific to any one course, and are actually lifelong skills that will be needed whatever you decide to do. These include skills such as: How to work as part of a team How to write an effective CV and job application Developing your personal confidence English skills and effective written communication Maths skills Information communication technology (ICT) skills Because English and Maths are so important to your progression, we have developed a number of programmes which run alongside your coursework, where you will gain valuable skills that can be applied in your future outside of the College. Raising the Participation Age (RPA) - What does this mean for young people? The vast majority of 16 and 17 year olds already choose to continue in education or training. The Government is increasing the age at which everyone needs to do so. If you are in Year 11 in September 2012, you will need to continue in education or training until at least the end of the school year in which you turn 17. If you are in Year 10 or below, you will need to continue until at least your 18th birthday, as most people already do. RPA is not about raising the school leaving age. You will be able to participate through a range of options: Full-time education, such as school or College An Apprenticeship Part-time education or training if you are employed, selfemployed or volunteering for 20 hours or more a week. Attending College can provide you with lots of new exciting opportunities and learning experiences. At South Staffordshire College we offer every type of course to suit your learning style - whether you prefer a more practical course to learn a new skill such as hairdressing or engineering, want to learn on-the-job through an Apprenticeship, or want to do A Levels. Fun activities Activities are organised throughout the year to broaden your experiences at College; whether it s an additional qualification, the chance to compete in WorldSkills competitions, pursue a hobby or try something new, as well as the opportunity to help others or raise money for charity. Further information regarding all these activities can be obtained from the Student Engagement Assistant based at your Campus. Be a Course Rep If you are up for a challenge, want to improve the learners voice at South Staffordshire College, gain some valuable CV points and make a difference to the teaching and learning of your course, then you have the qualities a Course Rep requires. The Course Rep s job is to find out the views of their class on any aspect of College life that is affecting them - everything from the food in the canteen to the quality of teaching materials. The Course Rep acts as a link between the class, Executive and Senior Leadership Teams, as well as the Board of Governors, by listening to learners, presenting their views at meetings and providing feedback afterwards. The Course Rep helps to improve the College experience for their classmates, themselves and future learners.
What else can I do at College? Mentoring & counselling We all have times when we need extra support with difficult personal circumstances. Mentors are here to support you during these times. This confidential support can be accessed by any learner at any Campus and is an invaluable way to stay on track if the going gets tough. We also work with a local counselling service, to ensure that any learner requiring counselling support can receive the help needed. They are able to offer practical advice, help you access external support agencies, or provide you with a means of working through any problem you may be experiencing. Agriculture Michael Whitehurst became a star... Michael is from a non agricultural background and living in Birmingham. He worked on a local farm at weekends and decided to make it his career. City & Guilds Diploma in Land-based Studies (Agriculture) LV 1 Agriculture This is a good course for you if you enjoy learning through practical work and if you have a passion for the outdoors and want to work as a stockman, farm worker, or herdsman. A typical working week will comprise of classroom sessions and lots of practical farm work. There will also be time to meet with your tutor and work on improving your Maths and English. Your tutor will encourage you to attend a voluntary agricultural placement 1 day each week. You will learn about working safely, maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals, crop systems, transporting animals and maintaining tools and equipment. Modules studied on this programme: Safe working practices Develop performance in land-based industries Assist with maintaining the health and well-being of animals Assist with care of animals Assist with the movement, handling and accommodation of animals Introduction to crop systems Use, transport and maintain tools and equipment. In addition, you will learn skills that are required in any career choice, including health & safety, confidence building, social and practical skills, English and Maths. Further Education: BTEC Diploma in Agriculture - Level 2 Apprenticeship (NVQ) Programme. DEFRA Contractor Stockman Herdsman. 3 GCSEs Grade E or above You should have a strong interest in working in the agricultural sector and demonstrate a commitment to succeed. Rodbaston Campus One year - full-time Learners will be required to purchase items of personal protective equipment (steel toe capped boots, overalls and wet weather gear) for use on the course. Prices and details will be discussed at interview. Bursary funds may be available to help with additional costs. BTEC Diploma in Agriculture LV 2 This is a good course for you if you enjoy learning through practical work and if you have a passion for the outdoors and want to work as a stockman, farm worker, for DEFRA, or as a herdsman. This course will also suit you if you are currently working in the agriculture industry and wish to gain a recognised qualification. A typical working week will comprise of classroom sessions and lots of practical work. There will also be time to meet with your tutor and work on improving your Maths and English. You will learn how to use machinery, maintain an estate, understand grass and forage crop production and maintain the health and wellbeing of livestock such as cows, pigs, sheep and poultry. In addition, you will learn skills that are required in any career choice, including health & safety, confidence building, social and practical skills, English and Maths. This course will also suit you if you have worked in the agriculture industry for a number of years and wish to gain a recognised qualification. Course Content A typical working week will comprise of a variety of classroom sessions and a number of practical classes where advanced agricultural skills can be developed. There will also be time to meet with your tutor and work on improving your Maths and English. You will learn a huge range of skills such as plant and soil science, livestock production, sheep production, estate skills, dairy and beef production, pig production, grassland management, business management and supervision, crop production and pollution and waste control management. In addition, you will learn skills that are required in any career choice, including health & safety, confidence building, social and practical skills, English and Maths. Our learners are actively involved in showing our pedigree Hereford Cattle at various prestigious industry events throughout the year. Our livestock have won at the County Show, and the Newport, Hereford, Nantwich and Three Counties Shows. Our learners are a key part of the working farm at Rodbaston and have been instrumental in re-establishing pig husbandry at the College. They are also key participants in the very busy lambing and calving seasons. Successful learners have set up their own businesses, progressed to higher education programmes at Harper Adams and the Royal Agricultural College. They have also secured employment in places as far afield as the USA and Australia.
