2 The Department of Education within the Faculty of Education and Society is concerned with teacher education in all sectors (Primary, Secondary and Post Compulsory) and has a wide portfolio of programmes. The Department of Education promotes excellence in all aspects of Education through study, research and practice, so produce skilled and competent practitioners. Our students reflect a broad variety of subjects, backgrounds and ages, and form an inspiring and diverse student body. The supportive and friendly atmosphere in the Department nurtures the pursuit of excellence and reflective practice. All of our students gain first-hand experience in classroom teaching and also explore important issues such as gender culture and race, special needs, and how to support gifted children. A number of our courses are in subject shortage areas, so your job prospects are excellent. Over 90% of our graduates go on to obtain full-time teaching posts. All programmes are designed to help you rise to the challenge of teaching by focusing on developing the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding. The University of Sunderland welcomes a large, international group of students from more than 100 countries, as well as students from all over the UK and Europe. You will find a really diverse mixture of nationalities and cultural backgrounds here, with students studying on a wide range of full-time and part-time programmes. 5 BA (Hons) Education and Curriculum Studies (Top-Up) Course Code: Duration: Course Summary XX39 1 year, Full-Time This programme will develop your insight and critical appreciation of children in school context and understand and promote the development, needs and experience of children without prejudice or discrimination. Alongside your professional knowledge and development, there is space in the course for your personal development; as you learn to use ideas and information in context, to plan and manage your own learning and abilities, and analytically criticise ideas and evidence. Career Opportunities Many students choose to follow this course with an additional qualification, allowing them to become either a higher level practitioner, lead professional or qualified primary teacher. Previous students have progressed into a range of teaching and learning careers across early years, primary phase or post compulsory education, utilising their subject knowledge in childcare and education. 6 BA (Hons) Education and Training Course Code: Duration: Course Summary CID424 3 years, Part Time This course is for professionals across the public and private sector, engaged in managing or facilitating learning. It is an opportunity to reflect on theory in practice and undertake research and critical analysis of lifelong learning and professional development. Students come to the BA (Hons) Education and Training from a wide range of backgrounds. Recent graduates have included: teachers, lecturers, nurse educators, police trainers, civil service trainers, workplace assessors, adult education tutors, managers, military trainers, and staff development officers. Year one can be studied on campus or at one of our Partner Colleges, Bishop Auckland College or Tyne met College. Completion of Year 1 (or recognised equivalent) enables students to progress to the BA (Hons) year which is based at the University of Sunderland's City Campus. Career Opportunities Through this course, participants acquire a range of intellectual and academic skills which make them very attractive to employers. These skills include: independence of mind, strategic and analytic thinking, personal confidence, selforganisation, the ability to deal with complex ideas, and the ability to work effectively with others. Recent graduates have found employment in a range of fields, such as further and higher education, the probation service, nursing, the fire service, and the police. 7 BA (Hons) English Education (11-18 years) with QTS Course Code: Duration: Course Summary XQ13 3 years, Full-Time BA (Hons) English Education enables students to become qualified to teach year olds in three years, with the qualification including Qualified Teacher Status. The course will broaden your study of all areas of English, with special emphasis on education, literature, linguistics and drama. In the first two years your modules focus on developing your subject knowledge and understanding. 9 BSc (Hons) Mathematics Education (11-18 yrs) with QTS Course Code: Duration: Course Summary XG11 2 years, Full-Time BSc (Hons) Mathematics Education enables students to become a qualified to teach year olds, with the qualification including qualified teacher status. This two-year course forms part of our suite of Initial Teacher Education for people who would like to teach at secondary level. According to OFSTED, fewer than 25 institutions are outstanding in this sector and Sunderland is one of them. The first year of this course develops your knowledge in maths so that you are confident in your mastery of the subject. The second year provides the necessary in-school experience in order to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The university belongs to a secondary partnership which includes more than 230 schools and colleges which means that there are lots of opportunities for placements. Career Opportunities Most graduates go on to teach Mathematics in secondary schools or colleges of further education. Your employment prospects as a Maths teacher will be excellent, particularly in England where there is currently a shortage. 10 BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS Course Code: Duration: Course Summary X122 3 years, Full-Time The three year BA (Hons) Primary Education, with QTS, enables you to become a qualified primary school teacher. During the course you will develop the knowledge and competences needed to teach all subjects in the primary curriculum, across Key Stages 1 and 2 (5 11 year olds). In addition, you will develop understanding of important professional skills, such as lesson planning and behaviour management. You will choose an option module route to specialise in, such as mathematics, science or modern foreign languages. Experience in the school environment is an essential part of the programme. Part of each year is spent on school-based placements, covering both Key Stages 1 and 2. The University of Sunderland works in partnership with a wide range of primary schools throughout the North East and during the three-year programme, you will undertake placements in a variety of settings and locations. Career Opportunities Successful completion of the course leads to both an honours degree and to qualified teacher status.
