Animation appears everywhere - as children s cartoons, advertisements, music videos, computer games, title sequences, special effects and as experimental and short films. There is no limit to the variety of materials and methods that can be used to make animated films. The creative possibilities in producing animation make it the ideal media for anyone who wants to see their ideas come vividly to life. This is a creative animation course offering a broad range of skills designed to enable you to operate independently within the commercial environment after graduation. The contemporary animation industry requires creative thinkers who can operate flexibly within different aspects of animation production. Minimum entry requirements Applicants should have grade d3 or better in at least 5 subjects in the Leaving Certificate, including either Irish or English. Maths is not required. Either Leaving Certificate Art or equivalent or a portfolio of relevant work. See page 81 for Portfolio guidelines. The minimum points for entry is 140 points. Career opportunities Employment prospects are currently very good for animation graduates with the correct skill sets and portfolio. Follow-on courses Graduates may apply for advanced entry onto Level 8 Animation programmes in other colleges such as IADT Dun Laoghaire and Limerick IT. 72

5 DIGITAL MEDIA DESIGN WORK PLACEMENT course title Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media Design national framework level 7 cao code ly427 duration 3 years number of places 20 awarding body lyit points in recent years year final median 2009/ / / Is this the course for you? Practice based and people focused, this course develops a student s ability to communicate across a wide spectrum of digital media; employing audio, video and motion design in the creation of content, and principles of interactivity in the creation of digital experiences that engage the intended audience. Creativity, artistry, communication and innovation are at the heart of everything we do. We champion and foster a culture of creative exploration, artistic expression, mastery and risk-taking. However, we never lose site of the fact that as communicators, we must always consider the message and the audience when developing creative solutions that are both appropriate and engaging. We also place a great deal of emphasis on the execution. Without a strong idea to begin with, execution means very little, but without an aesthetic sense or the ability to bring a creative vision to life, the best of ideas can fall at the first hurdle. Our goal is to develop graduates who can think imaginatively and bring their ideas and the ideas of others to life through a creative and artistic approach to digital communication. Minimum entry requirements Pass (od3 or better) in 5 Leaving Certificate subjects, including passes in either Irish or English (or an equivalent qualification). Maths is not required. The minimum points for entry is 140 points. Career opportunities Graduates from this programme are multi-skilled and may find employment with media and design companies, small creative enterprises or freelance in a range of fields including, web design, video production and multimedia production. Follow-on courses 1 B.A. Honours in Digital Media Design at LYIT 1 Honours degrees at other institutes or universities. 74

7 PRODUCT DESIGN course title BACHELOR OF ARTS IN PRODUCT DESIGN national framework level 7 cao code ly417 duration 3 years number of places 20 awarding body lyit points in recent years year final median 2009/ / / Is this the course for you? There is a lot more to Product Design than making something look good. The Product Designer s job is to work as a member of a design team, specifically, to develop attractive concepts that inspire the rest of the team. Product Designers need to be observant, sensitive and imaginative. They need to be interested in the world of business and marketing. They need to be curious about how things work and they need to enjoy solving problems. This course offers excellent opportunities to learn the relevant skills. This is a very practical course where students get experience in many aspects of designing and problem-solving by undertaking projects. We have well equipped modern design studios and access to a wide suite of state-of-the-art software. Drawing and model-making are used to develop concepts and to communicate these to others while computer generated renderings and models are also used to explore concepts. In many instances these are then modelled using Rapid Prototyping technology. Minimum entry requirements Pass (od3 or better) in 5 Leaving Certificate subjects, including passes in Maths and in either Irish or English (or an equivalent qualification). The minimum points for entry is 140 points. Career opportunities Product designers play a crucial role in creating innovative products with unique selling points, cost-effectively. A portfolio is a sample collection of your best work. It should be edited, easy to look through, and well presented. Be selective: include and highlight only your best work, excluding early works unless there are some exceptional pieces. Do not pack it with any more than 20 pieces (we appreciate quality, not quantity). What to include: 1 Notebooks, cuttings, creative sketchbooks or visual diaries indicating your interest in visual communication or Animation. 1 Drawings - studies in line and tone, based on your immediate environment. Include still life, life drawings or observational drawing in a range of media 1 Clearly identify your role if team work is included 1 Please submit any digital work on DVD or CD only What not to include: 1 Do not include drawings or paintings copied from photographs, books or magazines 1 Do not include any artwork which is a copy of someone else s work 1 Do not include 3D work (photographs of the work are fine). Some institutes now ask applicants to limit their portfolio to a special project. At LYIT, we do not ask for a special project as we recognise that every applicant is different, and the portfolio should show your individual abilities and interests. If you are working on a special project then please do include it in your portfolio if you are pleased with it, but we really want to see work that demonstrates a real enthusiasm for design or animation. 81
