Studying Health and Social Care in the South West Within the Devon, Cornwall and West Somerset area, there are many institutions which offer Higher Education (HE) courses in Health and Social Care related subjects. You can study for a Diploma in Higher Education, a Foundation Degree, or a full Honours Degree, to name but a few, and it could all be available closer than you think! Whatever your interests within health and social care, if you don t want to, you no longer need to leave the area to get the qualifications you want. 1
What courses can I study? Degrees (BA,BSc etc) These are usually fulltime for health-related areas, and usually take three years. In some cases the first year or two years can be taken at a local college, and the final year at a University institution, or occasionally, all three years can be taken at the local college. Foundation Degrees (FdA, FdSc etc) These are a new job-related qualification usually taking two years full-time or three years part-time. Colleges throughout the region are busy establishing courses to meet the needs of local employers, including the NHS. They are usually offered at local Further Education (FE) colleges. Diplomas of Higher Education (DipHE) These are offered at both Universities and FE colleges, and can take two or three years full-time, depending on the course. A DipHE in Nursing, for example, means you enter the NHS as a qualified nurse. Higher National Diplomas or Certificates (HND and HNC) These are wellestablished vocational qualifications pitched at a similar level to the new Foundation Degrees. They are available both full-time and part-time. Parttime HNCs usually take two years with a third year for an HND. 2
Money Matters Your course might be free, and you may also get paid to study! On full-time Degree courses which lead to a qualification as a health professional (eg. Nursing, Podiatry and Radiography) you will have your tuition fees paid in full by the Department of Health. (See course listings to see which courses are eligible). Additionally, you will be able to apply for a means-tested bursary, of up to 2,309 a year. You are also entitled to a partial student loan, plus additional allowances. If you take a DipHE course, your tuition fees are also paid for you by the Department of Health, and you are entitled to apply for a non-means-tested bursary of around 5,500 a year (mature students and those with dependents might get more than this). For those courses where you don t get your fees paid, or a bursary, you only have to start repaying your tuition fees and student loans when you finish the course and are earning above a minimum salary*. Plus, of course, you ll be saving on accommodation and travel costs by staying in the area. See: for more information on all of the bursaries for more on student loans *Currently the minimum salary is 15,000 a year. 3
What do the levels mean? Levels 4, 5 & 6: HE Entry level Certificate of Educational Achievement Entry Level Certificate Level 1: Foundation NVQ Level 1 GNVQ Foundation GCSEs (Grades D-G) Level 2: Intermediate NVQ Level 2 GNVQ Intermediate BTEC First Diploma GCSEs (Grades A-C) Level 3: Advanced NVQ Level 3 GNVQ Advanced A levels/avce BTEC National Diploma, Certificate or Award International Baccalaureate Access to HE NVQ Level 4 Foundation Degree Certificate of Higher Education BA/BSc Honours Degree HND/HNC 4
How will a qualification help my career? With better qualifications, you can enter the NHS at a higher level, and then work your way up the career framework (and the salary scale!) With a Level 2 qualification, such as GCSEs or an NVQ 2, for example, you would probably enter the NHS at Band 2, as a Support Worker. With a Degree in one of the health professions, you would enter at Band 5, as a Practitioner. Level 9 More Senior Staff Have the ultimate responsibility for clinical caseload decision making and full on-call accountability. E.g. General Practitioner 9 SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT Level 8 Consultant Practitioners Staff working at a very high level of clinical expertise and / or have responsibility for the planning of services. E.g. Consultant Midwife Level 7 Advanced Practitioners Experienced clinical professionals who have developed their skills and theoretical knowledge to a very high standard. They make high-level clinical decisions. E.g. Ward manager. Level 6 Senior Practitioners / Specialist Practitioners Have a higher degree of autonomy and responsibility than Practitioners in the clinical environment, or managing one or more service areas in the non-clinical environment. Eg. District Nurse, Operations manager Level 5 Practitioners Most frequently registered practitioners, with honours degree, in their first and second professional qualification jobs. E.g. Occupational Therapist, Biomedical Scientist. Level 4 Assistant Practitioners / Associate Practitioners Probably studying for or achieved Foundation degree or HND. They deliver clinical care that had previously been in the remit of registered professionals, under the direction and supervision of a state registered practitioner. E.g. Podiatry Assistant Level 3 Senior Healthcare Assistants / Technicians A higher level of responsibility than support worker, probably studying for, or have attained NVQ level 3 or equivalent. E.g. Rehabilitation Assistant. Level 2 Support Workers Frequently with the job title of Healthcare Assistant or Healthcare Technician probably studying for or has attained NVQ Level 2. E.g. Dispensing Assistant Level 1 Initial Entry Level Jobs Jobs such as Domestics or Cadets which need very little formal education or previous knowledge, skills or experience. E.g. 18 Case Studies Vicky is a 23 year old student nurse, taking her DipHE in Adult Nursing at SCAT. Although she left school with 9 GCSEs, she chose not to continue her studies, and did a variety of jobs including nannying and working with people with learning disabilities. While working at Musgrove Hospital, she took her NVQ Level 2 to become a Health Care Assistant. This, along with her GCSEs was enough to get her onto the Diploma course. She says, I was a bit worried about making the transition from working to studying again, but my NVQ really helped her, as it was all relevant to her course. As her Diploma is 50% theory and 50% placement, she feels it is preparing her well for working as a nurse. Roger is 28, and has just finished the second year of a part-time Foundation Degree in Health and Community Studies at Cornwall College, Camborne. Roger left school with GCSEs, but didn t complete his further education. He spent seven years as a professional speedway rider, travelling all around the country, but as this is limited in terms of age range, he wanted a longer term career. Roger is currently volunteering at St Austell s Share project, working with year olds, where he has been assessed for the work based learning module of his course. He says: I m a carer for my autistic step son, and a do voluntary work 2 days a week, and I wanted to do a course which fitted in with that. The Foundation Degree is one day a week for three years, which fits into everything else I do really well. I m planning to do the top-up to a Social Sciences degree when I m finished, which will be another 2 years parttime, and then hopefully the Masters degree after that and then go into youth work. 16
