The summary - UCAS programme profile BANNER BOX This BA (Hons) Animation programme is offered as a third year top-up to students that have successfully achieved a Foundation Degree in Animation, and who now wish to further progress their academic and practical skills on self-directed projects at degree level. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS You must have a Foundation Degree in Animation, or an equivalent HE qualification at this level in this, or a closely related, subject. Internal progression from Barking & Dagenham College s FdA in Animation should not be regarded as automatic, and you will be required to attend an interview to establish your suitability for progression to year 3. This will include reviewing your ability at academic writing, self-directed study, creative innovation and lateral thinking, and determining whether you have achieved sufficient levels in these areas to be able to succeed on the BA. For external applicants, you will be required to attend an interview in which you will present a portfolio demonstrating your creative and technical abilities. You also need to demonstrate that there is a significant overlap between the programme content of your qualification with that of the FdA at Barking and Dagenham College, especially in terms of academic study skills, literacy and professional engagement. ABOUT THE PROGRAMME What is the BA (Hons) in Animation This programme is delivered in a supportive environment working within small groups with excellent facilities and highly qualified and experienced staff. It is designed to build on the vocational platform offered by the FdA in Animation at Barking and Dagenham College, and provides opportunities to develop academic pathways in animation and also in the optional pathway of games design. Areas of study include research and dissertation, experimental approaches to practice, project realization and exhibition, and reflective development of professional practice. Satisfactory completion of the BA (Hons) could enable you to progress into a postgraduate programme at another institution, or directly into employment. The Collaborative Partnership between Barking & Dagenham College and UEL Your Degree programme will be delivered at Barking & Dagenham College s Rush Green campus. However, you will also be registered with UEL and you will have full opportunities to use UEL s state-of-the-art libraries, learning resource centers and student union. As part of the induction programme you will visit UEL s Docklands campus and some joint UEL and Barking & Dagenham College activities will be built into the programme. Barking & Dagenham College has worked collaboratively with UEL over a number of years on a number of Foundation Degrees, BA (Hons) Degrees, MBA and teacher training programmes such as the Certificate in Education. The current FdA in Animation is a reconfigured descendant of the successful FdA in Animation and Creative Video Production, which ran at the college in collaboration with UEL from This BA (Hons) programme was originally validated in 2013 and has since been updated to meet local market demands. 2
Programme structure This one year programme functions as a third year top-up to the Foundation Degree in Animation. The year is divided into three terms and you will be required to study for a minimum of 35 hours per week. This will be made up of a mixture of lectures, seminars, practical workshops, independent study, research and project work. Learning environment Your programme will be delivered in purpose built art and design studios, workshops and computer suites using industry standard software. There is also a three-camera television studio, stop motion studio, sound studio, and an excellent range of photographic and video production equipment including lighting, green screen facilities and microphones. The learning approach is very student-centred, with the opportunity for you to pursue your own specialist pathway within the module disciplines and the broad field of animation. Assessment The 3 modules that make up the programme have a total credit value of 120 at level 6. The method of assessment will vary across the modules and you will be required to present work for assessment in the form of major moving image projects, portfolios of written, interactive, or practical creative work, reports and dissertations. There are no formal exams. There are regular formative assessment points leading up to summative assessment, which for most modules takes place towards the end of the year in May. The overall grade for the award is independent of any assessment on previous awards and is calculated as the average weighted mark across the 3 modules. Work experience/placement opportunities It is important for your future employment in the industry to build upon the professional engagement elements that were included in the programme of the Foundation Degree. There will continue to be effective links between the college and industry practitioners who will deliver lectures and facilitate visits to their companies. You will also have opportunities to incorporate live briefs into your project work and to continue to develop your own links with the industry, and you will be supported in securing work placements should you wish to do so. Project work Working in the animation industry requires a mixture of effective group communication skills and the ability to work independently. In preparation for these working practices you will be required to work on moving image projects linked to the exhibition of your work. The Experimental Animation module encourages you to explore innovative methods in the production and exhibition of a creatively challenging personal project, and the Final Major Project (Production and Exhibition) provides opportunities, not only to work on an individual pathway, but also to collaborate with other students in the organization and management of an exhibition at an external venue. 3
Added value Barking & Dagenham College is situated within 15 miles of central London where the largest number of animation and media production companies in the UK have their premises. This proximity enables you to build meaningful industry links during your programme and enables staff to organise regular visits to exhibitions, screenings and festivals. Barking town centre receives regeneration funding and is within the exciting Thames Gateway development with planned expansion of the transport infrastructure, new housing, and educational, employment and cultural opportunities. IS THIS THE PROGRAMME FOR ME? If you are interested in... Animated films Short and experimental films Moving image art and installations Computer games Advertising and marketing CGI If you enjoy... Developing creative ideas Working in groups and as an individual on creative projects Using computers for animation and movie production Using photographic and video equipment Drawing and using a range of art materials Developing 2D and 3D characters CGI compositing and special effects If you want... To develop and apply visual and technical skills in the animation industry To be equipped to join other creative practitioners within the fields of film, 2D & 3D animation and CGI To participate actively in group work at college and in practice To be able to, potentially, contribute to the growing visual culture based in London Your future career There are career opportunities for animators in a wide range of sectors, including: media, interactive media, commercial and independent video production, television and film production; advertising, the games industry, education and research. 4
How we support you In keeping with the strategy implemented on the Foundation Degree, you will be supported through an effective tutorial system and staff will focus on your individual needs as a learner. As there is increased emphasis on self-directed learning on the BA programme, the majority of tutorial support will be student initiated rather than tutor led. Students with disabilities, and who are funded by DSA, are entitled to additional support by the college s extensive and experienced learner support department. This includes the provision of BSL communicators and note takers for deaf students. During their two years on the FdA, dyslexic students, or those who experience other difficulties with academic writing, also received in-class support and a programme of one-onone literacy improvement sessions. The policy on the FdA has been to encourage students to develop their literacy skills to a level where they can work independent of in-class support as it is deemed not to be appropriate at BA level. Nevertheless, should DSA funded students on the BA feel that they would benefit from out-of-class literacy support, such as proof-reading, this can be arranged independently with the learner support department. The college s professional services are available for all students, and include help with student finance, careers advice, counseling and health advice. You will have excellent access to ICT equipment including a range of high quality specialist facilities in art, design and interactive media, and library services that deliver study skills workshops and provide a range of bookable and drop-in resources. Bonus factors Close proximity to the media and animation industry in Central London You will have opportunities to submit work to local, national and international short film and animation festivals Close links with UEL Significant opportunities for professional engagement including visits to animation companies both in the UK and on overseas educational visits World class art galleries, museums, exhibition venues and festivals in the London area Small cohorts ensure an excellent tutor-student ratio Programme aims and learning outcomes What is this programme designed to achieve? This programme is designed to give you the opportunity to: Further develop practical, historical and theoretical understanding of animation practice and production Extend your imagination and creative identity in moving image projects Further develop transferable employability skills and approaches to professional practice, including self-directed promotion and exhibition. 5

How we assure the quality of this programme Before this programme started Before this programme started the UEL checked that there would be enough qualified staff to teach the programme adequate resources would be in place the overall aims and objectives were appropriate the content of the programme met national benchmark requirements the programme met any professional/statutory body requirements the proposal met other internal quality criteria covering a range of issues such as admissions policy, teaching, learning and assessment strategy and student support mechanisms This is done through a process of programme approval which involves consulting academics and experts including some subject specialists from industry and other institutions. How we monitor the quality of this programme The quality of this programme is monitored each year through evaluating: external examiner reports (considering quality and standards) statistical information (considering issues such as the pass rate) student feedback Drawing on this and other information, programme teams undertake the annual Review and Enhancement Process which is co-ordinated at divisional level and includes student participation. The process is monitored by the UEL s Quality Standing Committee. Once every six years UEL undertakes an in-depth review of the whole field. This is undertaken by a panel that includes at least two external subject specialists. The panel considers documents, looks at student work, speaks to current and former students and speaks to staff before drawing its conclusions. The result is a report highlighting good practice and identifying areas where action is needed. The role of the programme committee This programme has a programme committee comprising all relevant teaching staff, student representatives and others who make a contribution towards the effective operation of the programme (e.g. library/technician staff). The committee has responsibilities for the quality of the programme. It provides input into the operation of the Review and Enhancement Process and proposes changes to improve quality. The programme committee plays a critical role in the UEL quality assurance procedures. The role of external examiners The standard of this programme is monitored by at least one external examiner. External examiners have two primary responsibilities: to ensure the standard of the programme to ensure that justice is done to individual students External examiners fulfil these responsibilities in a variety of ways including: (see over) 9
