Did you know that you don t have to have a place at university to start your degree? You can now study the first two years of your degree course at college with a guaranteed place at one of our partner universities to complete the final 2 years. You will still complete your degree in four years, the same as if you went directly to university. On successful completion of your HND you will progress to years 3 and 4 of study at one of our partner universities to complete your degree.

3 Why choose an Associate Student Degree? You may not feel ready to make the move to university, whether you re coming straight from school or if you ve been out of education for a while. Studying at college can be a great way of building your expertise and knowledge, making it an ideal way to progress to university. At college you will work in smaller classes with more contact tutorial time, as well as benefiting from your own Learning Development Tutor who will give you guidance and support during your time at college. This support will help prepare you for university and ensure that your transition to university is seamless. The two years spent at college will provide you with hands-on practical experience. Combine this with the theory skills and knowledge at university and you will be highly employable and ready for the workplace on completion of your degree. What links will I have with university whilst at college? During your first two years you will be a student of Edinburgh College, however you will still have strong links with your partner university. There will be fixed contact time with your university including: visits from university lecturers in college guest lectures at the university practical work using the university facilities You can also apply to stay at your partner university s student accommodation for the first two years when you will be studying at college. Will I automatically progress to university? Your 3rd year place at your partner university is guaranteed if you meet the requirements in your graded units at college. 4 BEng Mechanical Engineering (incorporating HND Mechanical Engineering) Campus: Midlothian Mode of Attendance: Full-Time BEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering (incorporating HND Electrical Engineering) Campus: Midlothian Mode of Attendance: Full-Time This is an Associate Student Degree Programme where year 1 and year 2 of the course is delivered at Edinburgh College; on achievement of the HND at Edinburgh College you can progress to the 3rd year of the BEng Mechanical Engineering (incorporating HND Mechanical Engineering) degree course at The University of Aberdeen or Heriot Watt University. If you re looking to develop interests in the renewable sector, this in-depth course is ideal. You should have two Highers (C or above) in Maths and Physics or another Science Or an NC in Engineering, or Engineering Practice or NC in Multi Discipline Engineering Year 1 - Edinburgh College You will follow the framework for the HNC mechanical Engineering. The new course is designed to meet the varied needs of industry and commerce. On completion of the courses core elements, students can progress to year 2 of the HND programme Engineering. The aim of this HND is to provide a solid foundation and practical skills in advanced theories of engineering systems. You will use the latest simulation & design software and study technical subjects Thermo fluids, Dynamics, Statics and Strength of Materials, CAD, Mathematics 3, Safety Engineering, Engineering Principles plus further HN units that are the building blocks of the mechanical engineering discipline. This course is aligning candidates with undergraduate degree requirements. Year 3 & 4 - University of Aberdeen or Heriot-Watt University This course enables you to study to a very high standard in Mechanical Engineering - a dedicated course bringing together the subjects that are specific to mechanical engineers. This course will have study material in Mechanical Engineering, developing transferable skills and allowing the candidate to develop skills to the solution of mechanical and manufacturing engineering problems. This is suitable for candidates to develop interests in the developing renewable sector. This is an Associate Student Degree Programme where year 1 and year 2 of the course is delivered at Edinburgh College; on achievement of the HND at Edinburgh College you can progress to the 3rd year of the BEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering (incorporating HND Electrical Engineering) degree course at The University of Aberdeen, Heriot Watt University or Edinburgh Napier University. It offers a multitude of opportunities within the electrical industry. Energy Systems, Analogue Electronics, Embedded Systems, Physical Electronics and Communications. The year is completed by working on a large team-based project, incorporating Digital and Software Design, Mechanics and Management. Engineer in the Electrical Engineering field, particularly generation, distribution, research, manufacture, renewable energy and other emerging technologies. This is an Associate Student Degree Programme where year 1 and year 2 of the course is delivered at Edinburgh College; on achievement of the HND at Edinburgh College you can progress to the 3rd year of the BEng Energy and Environmental Engineering (incorporating HND Engineering Systems with Renewables) degree course at Edinburgh Napier University. This is a wide-ranging course that will equip you for a career in the renewable, built environment and traditional energy industries. 6 BA (Hons) Events Management Campus: Milton Road Mode of Attendance: Full-Time This is an Associate Student Degree programme where year one and two of the course is delivered at Edinburgh College; on achievement of the HND at Edinburgh College you can then progress to the 3rd year of the BA (Hons) Events Management degree course at Queen Margaret University. Recently, the number, scale and complexity of events taking place have increased enormously. Events are organised to promote and market products or to reward and motivate staff, but are also increasingly used to support a range of policy objectives, such as encouraging tourism, regenerating communities and stimulating local economies, as well as arousing civic pride and celebrating sporting and cultural occasions. However, with the increasing scale of the events business and the diversity and range of the dimensions of events operations, the industry has required an increasingly professional approach. The professional events manager requires an understanding of planning, management, logistics, legal issues, budgeting, staging, marketing, promotions and evaluation, as well as understanding the impact of events on the host communities. This course will give you unique opportunities to get hands-on experience of planning and organising events, as well as understanding the nature and characteristics of event design and management. You will gain experience of working in a team, helping prepare you to lead events and other sporting and cultural organisations. A minimum 2 Highers or relevant NC pass at SCQF Level 6. Year 1 You will study a range of events related subjects including an overview of industry legislation, budgeting and funding, marketing and IT. Year 2 Subjects include: Managing an Event, Conferences: an introduction, Food & Beverage Events, Behavioural Studies, Marketing in Travel and Tourism, Business Planning and Presentation. You will also study optional units which include topics such as Public Relations, Digital Culture: Online Communication, and Entrepreneurship. Year 3 We anticipate that you will explore how events relate to national and international strategic issues, and topics such as Recreating the City and Events and Regeneration will look at how cities use events for image and investment purposes, for example London 2012 or Glasgow You will also study New Enterprise Creation, Trends and Developments in Planned Events, Business Research Methods plus an elective choice. Year 4 Continuing to develop your understanding of Event Management, study themes will include: Management Insight & Consultancy, Conceptualising Events, Social Justice and Global Events. You will also complete a dissertation in an area of your choice. 7 BA (Hons) International Hospitality and Tourism Management (incorporating HND Hospitality Management) Campus: Granton Mode of Attendance: Full-Time This is an Associate Student Degree Programme where year 1 and year 2 of the course is delivered at Edinburgh College; on achievement of the HND at Edinburgh College you can progress to the 3rd year of the BA (Hons) International Hospitality and Tourism Management (incorporating HND Hospitality Management) degree course at Queen Margaret University. An explosive growth of leisure, travel and tourism over the past decade has led to an inevitable expansion of the hospitality and tourism industries which has made a significant contribution to national and global economies. This, in turn, has identified the need for well-educated and innovative managers. The hospitality and tourism industries have evolved in many ways and are characterised by growth, diversity, vitality and volatility within an ever-changing world. This course offers you an understanding of the nature of the product itself; an understanding of the political, economic and social context, within which the production and consumption of these products and services take place; an understanding of the management and organisation involved in the provision and consumption of the hospitality and tourism products and services; and a range of specialist applications and skills such as law and understanding of the research process. A minimum of 2 Highers or relevant NC pass at SCQF Level 6. Year 1 - Edinburgh College You will be introduced to a range of Hospitality subjects in the areas of; Food Service, Food Production, Food Hygiene, Accommodation, Finance and Customer Care. Year 2 - Edinburgh College You will study Tourism and Marketing and its role within Hospitality. There will also be an introduction to basic management skills which will be developed further in the 3rd and 4th years of the course. Year 3 - Queen Margaret University We anticipate that you will study a broad range of management techniques that are contextualised to successful operation of a hospitality or tourism business. Year 4 - Queen Margaret University We anticipate that you will study strategic issues and contemporary challenges for managers and complete a dissertation in the area of your choice. You will have the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to seek management trainee, junior management or supervisory positions in establishments that provide food and beverage and/or accommodation within the tourism industry or in companies that offer food and accommodation as part of a tourist attraction. 10 BA (Hons) Business Management Campus: Sighthill Mode of Attendance: Full-Time This is an Associate Student Degree Programme where year 1 and year 2 of the course is delivered at Edinburgh College; on achievement of the HND at Edinburgh College you can progress to the 3rd year of the BA (Hons) Business Management degree course at Queen Margaret University. It has never been more important for companies to employ highly qualified staff with good management skills as well as sound professional expertise in the field. This course aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to survive and succeed in today s business environment. Providing a broad management base, this course produces graduates with a wide business knowledge who can operate successfully in the modern business world. The course is structured around the two key themes of management and personal skills. You will develop a range of key core business skills, such as marketing, human resource management, finance and entrepreneurship. You will also acquire a range of transferable skills such as presentation techniques, research skills, interpersonal communication skills and knowledge of various IT packages. The course content has been designed in response to the needs of business and to help further your career, which could be in areas such as buying and merchandising, marketing, sales management, financial services, human resource management, running a small business or research. You can opt to study for an Honours degree over four years or an Ordinary degree over three years. Minimum of 2 Highers in relevant subject areas achieved in one sitting Standard Grade Maths at 3 or above Year 1: Edinburgh College You will take core units including management, communication, accounting, economics, marketing and information technology applications. Options include: law and personal enterprise skills. Year 2: Edinburgh College You will study core units including: Information Technology, Law, Business Information Management, International Economics and Statistics. In addition, you will choose study options from basic communication in French or German, International Marketing, Customer Care, Accounting Software and Preparing Business Plans. Year 3: Queen Margaret University Your study will now take on a more strategic emphasis, and you will study themes such as: Exploring Strategy, New Enterprise Creation, Organisational Behaviour, Business Research Methods, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, plus an elective choice. Year 4: Queen Margaret University Your final honours year includes modules in Management Insight and Consultancy, Leading Change, Critical Issues in Management plus a dissertation on a subject of your choice. Your dissertation can increase your skills and help you gain employment following completion of your degree. 12 BEng Civil Engineering (incorporating HND Civil Engineering) Campus: Granton Mode of Attendance: Full-time This is an Associate Student Degree Programme where year 1 and year 2 of the course is delivered at Edinburgh College; on achievement of the HND at Edinburgh College you can progress to the 3rd year of the BEng Civil Engineering (incorporating HND Civil Engineering) degree course at Edinburgh Napier University. This course is designed to teach you the skills required for a technical role in civil engineering. It s perfect if you have the ambition to design and build the bridges, roads, railways and tunnels of tomorrow. You ll acquire knowledge of the latest construction practices by covering a diverse selection of industry-relevant skills, such as structural analysis and design, and geotechnical engineering. You ll be in a fantastic position for further studies, and the course provides you with exciting career prospects. You ll be well-prepared to progress onto employment as a civil engineering technician or technologist.
