Since the College of Charleston s first graduating class in 1794, our alumni have excelled in their careers, due in large part to the exceptional liberal arts and sciences education they received. The Alumni Awards Gala recognizes alumni whose accomplishments in their chosen fields have brought honor to the College, showcasing the role the College has played in their lives as well as the impact they have had on society. 2015 ALUMNI AWARD RECIPIENTS PRE-MEDICAL SOCIETY S OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD IN MEDICINE This award is sponsored by the Alumni Association, the School of Sciences and Mathematics and the Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Medical Society. The award recognizes a College of Charleston graduate whose practice of medicine represents remarkable achievement, and who demonstrates an enduring commitment to the College of Charleston. The members of Alpha Epsilon Delta select the recipient. Ebony Hilton 04 Graduated magna cum laude from the College with a triple major in biology, biochemistry and chemistry Received medical degree from MUSC in 2008 Completed residency in anesthesiology followed by a fellowship in critical care medicine at MUSC Serves as an anesthesiologist in the emergency room and ICU at MUSC HOWARD F. RUDD JR. BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD Named for the founding dean of the School of Business, this award recognizes a graduate who has made significant contributions as a business leader to industry or profession, community and alma mater, and who has exhibited great integrity in his or her business and personal life. The School of Business selects this award recipient. Penny Jones McKeever 69 Developed the Netherlands Travel Study Program for the Intermodal Transportation Program, the business-education partnership with the S.C. State Ports Authority that she helped develop with Dean Howard Rudd and was named associate director of in 1988 Received Dean s Special Service Award for contribution and service to the School of Business faculty and students in 1991 Named to the School of Business Alumni Advisory Board in 1998 Received College of Charleston Distinguished Advising Award in 1999 Named global studies director for the School of Business in 2007 Named associate director of graduate and professional programs, serving as head of operations, recruitment and admissions for the Global M.B.A. Program COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON 2015 ALUMNI AWARDS GALA 6

2015 ALUMNI AWARD RECIPIENTS YOUNG ALUMNA AWARD This award recognizes an alumna whose life has expressed the finest of College of Charleston traditions through service to her community or profession. The recipient s class year must be within the last 10 years. Harriett E. Lee 08 Serves as vice president of YEScarolina (Youth Entrepreneurship in South Carolina) Owns the marketing firm, Whisper & Roar Served as partner and social media director for Dig South Plays an integral part in developing Charleston s business community and local economy Volunteers with Lowcountry Local First and the Green Heart Project school garden at Mitchell Elementary Involved with SIFE (ENACTUS) at the School of Business ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR AWARD This award recognizes an alumnus who has contributed significantly to his profession or community during the past year. Nafees Bin Zafar 98 Won his second Academy Award (2015) for the Drop Destruction Toolkit used to create visual effects in films Honored for his creation of a system that makes destruction effects for movies Graduated from Academic Magnet at 16 and received a degree in computer science from the College Won his first Academy Award (2008) for digital effects in films like The Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean and At World s End COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON 2015 ALUMNI AWARDS GALA 7

2015 ALUMNI AWARD RECIPIENTS DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA AWARD This award recognizes an alumna who has made significant contributions to her profession or her community over a long period of time. Brucie Howe Hendricks 83 Became the first Charleston woman to be a U.S. district judge Served as assistant U.S. attorney in Charleston, 1991-2002; U.S. magistrate in Greenville, 2002-2011; and U.S. magistrate in Charleston, 2011-2015 Started the federal drug court called the Bridge Program to help drug offenders overcome their addictions; the program has been called a national model and garnered national headlines Served as a member of the Alumni Board and the Cougar Club Board ALUMNI AWARD OF HONOR This is the highest award given by the Alumni Association to those who have made outstanding contributions to the Association or the College. Both alumni and friends of the College are eligible.
