2 Remove the pcking mteril from the printer IMPORTANT Sve ll pcking mteril nd the crton in cse you hve to ship your printer. DO NOT plug in the AC power cord yet. 3 Instll the drum unit nd toner crtridge ssemblies Unpck the four drum unit nd toner crtridge ssemblies nd gently shke ech of them from side to side severl times to distribute the toner evenly inside the ssembly. b Remove the pcking tpe from the outside of the printer. Fully open the top cover by lifting up on the hndle. b Remove the protective cover by pulling on the tb s shown in the illustrtion. Do not touch the surfce of the pcking film. It my contin toner powder which cn stin your skin nd clothing. c Remove the pcking mteril from the inside of the printer. IMPORTANT To void print qulity problems, DO NOT touch the surfce of the drum unit. 4

c Slide ll four of the drum unit nd toner crtridge ssemblies into the printer s shown in the illustrtion. Mke sure tht you mtch the toner crtridge color to the sme color lbel on the printer. 4 Lod pper in the pper try Pull the pper try completely out of the printer. b While pressing the green pper-guide relese lever, slide the pper guides to fit the pper size you re loding in the try. Mke sure tht the guides re firmly in the slots. C - Cyn Y - Yellow M - Mgent K - Blck d Close the top cover of the printer. c Fn the stck of pper well to void pper jms nd misfeeds. 5

d Put pper in the try, nd mke sure tht the pper is below the mximum pper mrk. The side to be printed on must be fce down. 5 Print test pge IMPORTANT DO NOT connect the interfce cble yet. e IMPORTANT Mke sure the pper guides touch the sides of the pper so it will feed properly. Put the pper try firmly bck in the printer. Mke sure tht it is completely inserted into the printer. Mke sure tht the printer power switch is off. b Connect the AC power cord to the printer. c Plug the AC power cord into n AC power outlet. Turn on the printer power switch. d After the printer hs finished wrming up, the LCD will show Redy. 6

e Press Go. The printer prints test pge. Check tht the test pge hs printed correctly. 6 Set your lnguge on the control pnel This function will not be vilble fter the first print job you send from your computer. b c d Press + or - to choose Generl Setup. Press OK. Generl Setup Press OK gin. Locl Lnguge Press + or - to choose your lnguge. Press OK to ccept. English Press Cncel to exit from Menu. Chinese is not supported on the LCD. Now go to Go to the next pge to instll the printer driver. 7

USB Windows For USB Interfce Cble Users 8 Instll the printer driver nd connect the printer to your computer d Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The opening screen will pper utomticlly. Choose your printer model nd the lnguge. IMPORTANT DO NOT connect the USB interfce cble yet. If the Found New Hrdwre Wizrd ppers on your computer, click Cncel. e If the Brother screen does not pper utomticlly, go to My Computer (Computer), double-click the CD-ROM icon, nd then doubleclick strt.exe. Click Instll Printer Driver on the menu screen. Turn off the printer power switch. f Click USB cble users. b Mke sure the USB interfce cble is NOT connected to the printer, nd then begin instlling the printer driver. If you hve lredy connected the cble, remove it. For Windows Vist, when the User Account Control screen ppers, click Continue. c Turn on your computer. (You must be logged on with Administrtor rights.) 10

USB Windows g h When the License Agreement window ppers, click Yes if you gree to the License Agreement. Remove the lbel covering the USB interfce connector. j Click Finish. If you do not wnt to set your printer s Defult printer, uncheck Set s Defult Printer. If you wnt to disble the Sttus Monitor, uncheck Enble Sttus Monitor. USB Windows Mcintosh Finish The instlltion is now complete. i When this screen ppers, mke sure the printer power switch is on. Connect the USB cble to the USB connector mrked with the symbol, nd then connect the cble to the computer. Click Next. XML Pper Specifiction Printer Driver The XML Pper Specifiction Printer Driver is the most suitble driver when printing from the pplictions tht use the XML Pper Specifiction documents. Plese downlod the ltest driver by ccessing the Brother Solutions Center t http://solutions.brother.com/. 11

USB Mcintosh For USB Interfce Cble Users 8 Connect the printer to your Mcintosh nd instll the driver Remove the lbel covering the USB interfce connector. e Double-click the HL3000 icon on your desktop. Double-click the Strt Here icon. Follow the on-screen instructions. f Click Instll Printer Driver on the menu screen. b Connect the USB cble to the USB connector mrked with symbol, nd then connect the cble to your Mcintosh. g Click USB cble users nd follow the on-screen instructions. Then, restrt your Mcintosh. c IMPORTANT DO NOT connect the printer to USB port on keybord or non-powered USB hub. Connect the printer directly to your computer. Mke sure the printer power switch is on. h The Brother softwre will serch for the Brother printer. During this time the following screen will pper. d Turn on your Mcintosh. Put the supplied CD- ROM into your CD-ROM drive. 12

USB Mcintosh i Choose the printer you wish to connect, nd then click OK. j When this screen ppers, click OK. USB Windows Mcintosh Finish The instlltion is now complete. 13

Wired Network Windows For Wired Network Interfce Cble Users 8 For Peer-to-Peer network printer users d Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The opening screen will pper utomticlly. Choose your printer model nd the lnguge. TCP/IP Router b Network printer 1 TCP/IP If you re going to connect the printer to your network, we recommend tht you contct your system dministrtor prior to instlltion or see the Network User s Guide on the CD-ROM. If you re using Windows Firewll or firewll function of nti-spywre or ntivirus pplictions, temporrily disble them. Once you re sure tht you cn print, configure the softwre settings following the instructions. e If the Brother screen does not pper utomticlly, go to My Computer (Computer), double-click the CD-ROM icon, nd then doubleclick strt.exe. Click Instll Printer Driver on the menu screen. Connect the printer to your network nd instll the driver Connect the network interfce cble to the LAN connector mrked with symbol nd then connect it to free port on your hub. f Click Network cble users. b c Mke sure the printer power switch is on. Turn on your computer. (You must be logged on with Administrtor rights.) For Windows Vist, when the User Account Control screen ppers, click Continue. 14

Wired Network Windows g When the License Agreement window ppers, click Yes if you gree to the License Agreement. j Choose your printer, nd then click Next. h i Choose Brother Peer-to-Peer Network Printer, nd then click Next. Choose Serch the network for devices nd choose from list of discovered devices (Recommended). Or enter your printer's IP Address or its node nme. Click Next. k If your printer tkes long time (bout 1 minute) to pper on the list, click Refresh. Click Finish. If you do not wnt to set your printer s Defult printer, uncheck Set s Defult Printer. If you wnt to disble the Sttus Monitor, uncheck Enble Sttus Monitor. If you disble your Personl Firewll softwre (e.g. Windows Firewll), turn it bck on. Wired Network Windows Mcintosh Finish The instlltion is now complete. You cn find your printer s IP Address nd the node nme by printing out the Printer Settings Pge. See Print the Printer Settings Pge on pge 22. XML Pper Specifiction Printer Driver The XML Pper Specifiction Printer Driver is the most suitble driver when printing from the pplictions tht use the XML Pper Specifiction documents. Plese downlod the ltest driver by ccessing the Brother Solutions Center t http://solutions.brother.com/. 15

Wired Network Windows 8 For shred network printer users c Click Instll Printer Driver on the menu screen. TCP/IP d Click Network cble users. Client computer b Also known s Server or Print server c TCP/IP or USB d Printer If you re going to connect to shred printer on your network, we recommend tht you sk your system dministrtor bout the queue or shre nme for the printer prior to instlltion. Instll the driver nd choose the correct printer queue or shre nme For Windows Vist, when the User Account Control screen ppers, click Continue. b Turn on your computer. (You must be logged on with Administrtor rights.) Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The opening screen will pper utomticlly. Choose your printer model nd the lnguge. e When the License Agreement window ppers, click Yes if you gree to the License Agreement. If the Brother screen does not pper utomticlly, go to My Computer (Computer), double-click the CD-ROM icon, nd then doubleclick strt.exe. 16

f Wired Network Choose Network Shred Printer, nd then click Next. Windows XML Pper Specifiction Printer Driver The XML Pper Specifiction Printer Driver is the most suitble driver when printing from the pplictions tht use the XML Pper Specifiction documents. Plese downlod the ltest driver by ccessing the Brother Solutions Center t http://solutions.brother.com/. g Choose your printer's queue, nd then click OK. h Contct your dministrtor if you do not know the loction or the nme of the printer in the network. Click Finish. Wired Network Windows Mcintosh If you do not wnt to set your printer s Defult printer, uncheck Set s Defult Printer. If you wnt to disble the Sttus Monitor, uncheck Enble Sttus Monitor. Finish The instlltion is now complete. 17

Wired Network Mcintosh For Wired Network Interfce Cble Users 8 Connect the printer to your Mcintosh nd instll the driver Connect the network interfce cble to the LAN connector mrked with symbol nd then connect it to free port on your hub. e Click Instll Printer Driver on the menu screen. f Click Network cble users nd follow the on-screen instructions. Then, restrt your Mcintosh. b Mke sure the printer power switch is on. c Turn on your Mcintosh. Put the supplied CD- ROM into your CD-ROM drive. g The Brother softwre will serch for the Brother printer. During this time the following screen will pper. d Double-click the HL3000 icon on your desktop. Double-click the Strt Here icon. Follow the on-screen instructions. h Choose the printer you wish to connect, nd then click OK. 18

Wired Network Mcintosh i If there is more thn one of the sme printer model connected on your network, the MAC Address (Ethernet Address) will be displyed fter the model nme. You cn lso confirm your IP Address by scrolling to the right. You cn find your printer s MAC Address (Ethernet Address) nd IP Address by printing out the Printer Settings Pge. See Print the Printer Settings Pge on pge 22. When this screen ppers, click OK. Finish The instlltion is now complete. Wired Network Windows Mcintosh 19

For Network Users BRAdmin Light utility (For Windows users) The BRAdmin Light is utility for initil setup of Brother network connected devices. It cn lso serch for Brother products in TCP/IP environment, view the sttus nd configure bsic network settings, such s IP Address. For more informtion on BRAdmin Light, visit us t http://solutions.brother.com/. If you require more dvnced printer mngement, use the ltest Brother BRAdmin Professionl utility version tht is vilble s downlod from http://solutions.brother.com/. If you re using Windows Firewll or firewll function of nti-spywre or ntivirus pplictions, temporrily disble them. Once you re sure tht you cn print, configure the softwre settings following the instructions. Instll the BRAdmin Light configurtion utility The defult pssword for the print server is ccess. You cn use BRAdmin Light to chnge this pssword. Click Instll Other Drivers or Utilities on the menu screen. Set your IP Address, Subnet Msk nd Gtewy using BRAdmin Light If you hve DHCP/BOOTP/RARP server in your network, you don t hve to do the following opertion. Becuse the print server will utomticlly obtin its IP Address. Strt BRAdmin Light. It will serch for new devices utomticlly. b Double-click the unconfigured device. b Click BRAdmin Light nd follow the on-screen instructions. c Choose STATIC for the Boot Method. Enter the IP Address, Subnet Msk nd Gtewy, nd then click OK. For Windows Vist, when the User Account Control screen ppers, click Allow. d The ddress informtion will be sved to the printer. 20

For Network Users BRAdmin Light utility (For Mc OS X users) The BRAdmin Light is utility for initil setup of Brother network connected devices. It cn lso serch for Brother products on your network, view the sttus nd configure bsic network settings, such s IP Address from computer running Mc OS X 10.3.9 or greter. The BRAdmin Light softwre will be instlled utomticlly when you instll the printer driver. If you hve lredy instlled the printer driver, you don t hve to instll it gin. For more informtion on BRAdmin Light, visit us t http://solutions.brother.com/. Set your IP Address, Subnet Msk nd Gtewy using BRAdmin Light c Double click the file BRAdmin Light.jr nd run the softwre. BRAdmin Light will then serch for new devices utomticlly. If you hve DHCP/BOOTP/RARP server in your network, you don t hve to do the following opertion. The print server will utomticlly obtin its own IP Address. Mke sure tht version 1.4.2 or lter of Jv client softwre is instlled on your computer. The defult pssword for the print server is ccess. You cn use BRAdmin Light to chnge this pssword. Double-click the Mcintosh HD icon on your desktop. d Double-click the unconfigured device. b Choose Librry, Printers, Brother nd then Utilities. e Choose STATIC for the Boot Method. Enter the IP Address, Subnet Msk nd Gtewy, nd then click OK. f The ddress informtion will be sved to the printer. 21

For Network Users Web Bsed Mngement (web browser) The Brother print server is equipped with web server tht llows you to monitor its sttus or chnge some of its configurtion settings, using HTTP (Hyper Text Trnsfer Protocol). The login nme for the Administrtor is dmin (cse sensitive) nd the defult pssword is ccess. We recommend Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (or greter) or Firefox 1.0 (or greter) for Windows nd Sfri 1.3 (or greter) for Mcintosh. Plese lso mke sure tht JvScript nd Cookies re lwys enbled in whichever browser you use. To use web browser, you will need to know the IP Address of the print server. The IP Address of the print server is listed on the Print Setting Pge. Reset the network settings to the fctory defult To reset ll network settings of the print server to its fctory defult, follow the steps below. b c Press the + or - to choose Network. Press OK. Network Press the + or - to choose Fctory Reset. Press OK. Fctory Reset Press OK gin. Restrt Printer? Print the Printer Settings Pge The Printer Settings Pge lists ll the current printer settings, including network settings. To print the printer settings pge: b Press the + or - to choose Mchine Info.. Press OK. Mchine Info. Press OK gin. Print Settings Type http://printer_ip_ddress/ into your browser. (Where printer_ip_ddress is the IP Address or the print server nme) For exmple: http://192.168.1.2/ See Chpter 10 of the Network User's Guide. If the IP Address on the Printer Settings Pge shows 0.0.0.0, wit for one minute nd try gin. 22

Other Informtion Sfety precutions To use the printer sfely If you DO NOT follow these sfety instructions, there is possibility of fire, electricl shock, burn or suffoction. Plese keep these instructions for lter reference nd red them before ttempting ny mintennce. WARNING There re high voltge electrodes inside the printer. Before you clen the inside of the printer, mke sure tht you hve turned off the power switch nd unplugged the printer from the AC power outlet. DO NOT hndle the plug with wet hnds. Doing this might cuse n electricl shock. Alwys mke sure the plug is fully inserted. Plstic bgs re used in the pckging. To void dnger of suffoction, keep these bgs wy from bbies nd children. DO NOT use flmmble substnces, ny type of spry or ny orgnic solvent/liquids contining lcohol or mmoni to clen the inside or outside of the printer. Doing this my cuse fire or electricl shock. Refer to Chpter 6 of the User's Guide for how to clen the printer. DO NOT use vcuum clener to clen up scttered toner. Doing this might cuse the toner dust to ignite inside the vcuum clener, potentilly strting fire. Crefully clen the toner dust with dry, lint-free cloth nd dispose of it ccording to locl regultions. Clening the outside of the printer: Mke sure tht you hve unplugged the printer from the AC power outlet. Use neutrl detergents. Clening with voltile liquids such s thinner or benzine will dmge the outside surfce of the printer. DO NOT use clening mterils tht contin mmoni. 23

Other Informtion CAUTION Lightning nd power surges cn dmge this product! We recommend tht you use qulity surge protection device on the AC power outlet, or unplug the cords during lightning storm. After you hve just used the printer, some internl prts of the printer will be extremely hot.
