14 Chpter 2. Lerning the sics First use Reding the mnuls Red the supplied mnuls efore using your computer. Connecting to the power The supplied ttery pck is not fully chrged t purchse. To chrge the ttery nd egin using your computer, insert the ttery pck nd connect the computer to n electricl outlet. The ttery is utomticlly chrged while the computer is running on AC power. Instlling the ttery pck Refer to the supplied Setup Poster to instll the ttery pck. Connecting the computer to n electricl outlet 1 Connect the power cord to the AC dpter. 2 Connect the AC dpter to the AC power dpter jck of the computer firmly. 3 Plug the power cord into n electricl outlet. Turning on the computer Press the power utton to turn on the computer. Configuring the operting system You my need to configure the operting system when it is first used. 15 Chpter 2. Lerning the sics Putting your computer into sleep stte or shutting it down When you finish working with your computer, you cn put it into sleep stte or shut it down. Putting your computer into sleep stte If you will e wy from your computer for only short time, put the computer into sleep stte. When the computer is in sleep stte, you cn quickly wke it to resume use, nd ypss the strtup process. To put the computer into sleep stte, do one of the following. Click nd select Sleep from the Strt menu. Press Fn + F1. Note: Wit until the power indictor light strts linking (indicting tht the computer is in sleep stte) efore you move your computer. Moving your computer while the hrd disk is spinning cn dmge the hrd disk, cusing loss of dt. To wke the computer, do one of the following. Press the power utton. Press ny key on the keyord. Shutting down your computer If you re not going to use your computer for dy or two, shut it down. To shut down your computer, click nd select Shut down from the Strt menu. 11

16 Chpter 2. Lerning the sics Using AC dpter nd ttery Checking ttery sttus You cn determine the percentge of ttery power remining y checking the ttery icon in the notifiction re. Note: As ech computer user hs different hits nd needs, it is difficult to predict how long ttery chrge will lst. There re two min fctors: The mount of energy stored in the ttery when you commence work. The wy you use your computer: for exmple, how often you ccess the hrd disk drive nd how right you mke the computer disply. Chrging the ttery When you find tht the ttery power is low, you need to chrge the ttery or replce it with fully chrged one. You need to chrge the ttery in ny of the following situtions: When you purchse new ttery If the ttery sttus indictor strts linking If the ttery hs not een used for long time Notes: You re dvised to insert the ttery pck when using your computer to prevent smll prticles from entering the inside of your computer. To increse the life of the ttery pck, the computer does not strt rechrging the ttery immeditely fter it drops from fully chrged. Chrge the ttery t temperture etween 50 F nd 86 F (10 C-30 C). Full chrge or dischrge is not required. Removing the ttery pck If you re not going to use the computer for n extended period of time, or if you need to send your computer to Lenovo for service, etc. remove the ttery pck from the computer. Before removing the ttery pck, mke sure the computer hs een shut down. Hndling the ttery 12 If the rechrgele ttery pck is replced with n incorrect type, there my e dnger of n explosion. The ttery pck contins smll mount of hrmful sustnces. To void possile injury nd detriment to the environment, py ttention to the following points: Replce only with ttery of the type recommended y Lenovo. Keep the ttery pck wy from fire. Do not expose the ttery pck to wter or rin. Do not ttempt to disssemle the ttery pck. Do not short-circuit the ttery pck. Keep the ttery pck wy from children. Do not put the ttery pck in trsh tht is disposed of in lndfills. When disposing of the ttery, comply with locl ordinnces or regultions nd your compny s sfety stndrds.

17 Chpter 2. Lerning the sics Using the touchpd Touchpd Touchpd utton To move the cursor on the screen, slide your fingertip over the pd in the direction in which you wnt the cursor to move. The function of the left/right side corresponds to tht of the left/right mouse utton on conventionl mouse. Notes: You cn enle/disle the touchpd using Fn + F6. When the touchpd indictor is lit, the touchpd is disled. 13

Numeric keypd Y470 The keyord hs keys tht, when enled, work s 10-key numeric keypd. To enle or disle the numeric keypd, press Fn + F8. Y570 The keyord hs seprte numeric keypd. To enle or disle the numeric keypd, press the Num Lock key. Note: The Num lock indictor will light on if the numeric keypd is enled. 14

Turn on/off the cklight of the LCD screen. Open the interfce for the disply device switch to select this noteook or n externl disply. Open the interfce for disply resolution settings. Using memory crds (not supplied) Your computer supports the following types of memory crds: Secure Digitl (SD) crd Secure Digitl PRO (SD PRO) crd MultiMediCrd (MMC) Memory Stick (MS) Memory Stick PRO (MS PRO) xd-picture (xd) crd Notes: Insert ONLY one crd in the slot t time. This crd reder does not support SDIO devices (e.g., SDIO Bluetooth, etc.). Inserting memory crd 1 Push the dummy crd until you her click. Gently pull the dummy crd out of the memory crd slot. Note: The dummy crd is used for preventing dust nd smll prticles from entering the inside of your computer when the memory crd slot is not in use. Retin the dummy crd for future use. 2 Slide the memory crd in until it clicks into plce. Removing memory crd 1 Push the memory crd until you her click. 2 Gently pull the memory crd out of the memory crd slot. Note: Before removing the memory crd, disle it vi Windows sfely remove hrdwre nd eject medi utility to void dt corruption. Connecting universl seril us (USB) device Your computer comes with three USB ports nd n esata/usb port comptile with USB devices or four USB ports comptile with USB devices. Note: When using high power consumption USB device such s USB ODD, use the externl device s power dpter. Otherwise, the device my not e recognized, nd system shut down my result. 17

Lerning the sics Connecting Bluetooth device If your computer hs n integrted Bluetooth dpter crd, it cn connect to nd trnsfer dt wirelessly to other Bluetooth enled devices, such s noteook computers, PDAs nd cell phones. You cn trnsfer dt etween these devices without cles nd up to 10 meters rnge in open spce. Note: The ctul mximum rnge my vry due to interference nd trnsmission rriers. To get the est possile connection speed, plce the device s ner your computer s possile. Enling Bluetooth communictions on your computer 1 Slide the integrted wireless device switch from to. 2 Press Fn + F5 to mke configurtion. Notes: When you do not need to use the Bluetooth function, turn it off to sve ttery power. You need to pir the Bluetooth enled device with your computer efore you cn trnsfer dt etween them. Red the documenttion supplied with the Bluetooth enled device for detils on how to pir the device with your computer. 18

Lerning the sics OneKey Theter utton e Lenovo OneKey Theter provides five scenrio modes for using your computer in different wys: norml mode, movie mode, music mode, picture mode, nd intelligent mode. These modes re preset enhncements y Lenovo to improve visul nd url experiences vi your computer in different usge scenrios. You cn mnully choose etween norml, movie nd intelligent mode. Picture or music mode is utomticlly selected if your computer is in intelligent mode. To mnully select desired mode: 1 Press nd relese the OneKey Theter utton to disply the on-screen menu. 2 Keep pressing nd relesing the utton until the icon of your desired mode is highlighted. The computer switches to the selected mode fter 2 seconds. Norml mode The defult mode. Movie mode Provides enhnced visul nd udio output. Music mode Provides enhnced udio output. Picture mode Provides enhnced contrst nd color sturtion. Intelligent mode Lenovo OneKey Theter switches intelligently etween movie mode, music mode, nd picture mode ccording to the ppliction you re using. Notes: You cn enle or disle the OneKey Theter feture vi the Strt menu. Some pplictions my not e comptile with intelligent mode. 20

Lerning the sics Therml mngement utton f The therml mngement utton cn e used to switch the computer etween different work modes nd thus control the speed t which the het dissiption fn spins. You cn choose etween stndrd, super silent, or efficient therml dissiption mode. You cn lso ctivte the dust clening feture y pressing nd relesing the therml control utton. Stndrd mode Stndrd mode is the fctory defult mode. It is the recommended work mode for most progrms. Super silent mode If your computer is not running lrge progrms nd you wnt silent work environment, switch your computer to super silent mode. To switch to super silent mode, repetedly press the therml mngement utton until is highlighted. The computer will switch to super silent mode fter three seconds. Note: The het dissiption fn spins t reltively low speeds in super silent mode, nd thus dissiptes less het thn in other modes. If lrge progrms re running, the system my lower the voltge of the CPU (centrl processing unit) utomticlly to decrese the het produced y the CPU. Consequently, you might experience lower system performnce when the computer is running in super silent mode. Efficient therml dissiption mode If lrge progrms re running, switch your computer to efficient therml dissiption mode to llow more efficient therml dissiption. To switch to efficient therml dissiption mode, repetedly press the therml mngement utton until is highlighted. Performing dust clening Dust tends to ccumulte round the het sink of the computer s CPU over time, reducing the dissiption cpility of the het sink. You cn reduce the mount of ccumulted dust y performing dust clening. To perform dust clening, repetedly press the therml mngement utton until is highlighted. Dust clening will strt fter three seconds. When dust clening is ctivted, the het dissiption fn spins t high nd low speed lterntively to llow dust to e dischrged. A complete dust clening process tkes severl minutes to complete. You cn cncel the process t ny time y switching the computer to stndrd, super silent or efficient therml dissiption mode. Upon completion, the computer returns to the previous mode when dust clening ws ctivted. Note: We recommend you perform dust clening t lest once month to reduce the mount of dust ccumultion round the het sink. Plce your computer in clen environment with good ventiltion when performing dust clening. 21

Attching security lock (not supplied) You cn ttch security lock to your computer to help prevent it from eing removed without your permission. For detils on instlling the security lock, plese refer to the instructions shipped with the security lock tht you hve purchsed. Refer to the Right-side view on pge 6 for the loction of the Kensington slot. Notes: Before purchsing ny security product, verify tht it is comptile with this type of security keyhole. You re responsile for evluting, selecting, nd implementing the locking devices nd security fetures. Lenovo offers no comment judgement or wrrnty regrding the function, qulity or performnce of locking devices nd security fetures. Using VeriFce VeriFce is fce recognition softwre which tkes digitl snpshot, extrcts key fetures of your fce, nd cretes digitl mp tht ecomes the system s pssword. If you wnt to ctivte VeriFce for the first time, click the VeriFce icon on the desktop to register your fcil imge. Notes: The fce registrtion nd verifiction works est in n environment with stedy nd even light. You cn determine whether to use this function when you log on the system. For more detils on VeriFce, see the softwre help. Using psswords Using psswords helps prevent your computer from eing used y others. Once you set pssword nd enle it, prompt ppers on the screen ech time you power on the computer. Enter your pssword t the prompt. The computer cnnot e used unless you enter the correct pssword. Note: This pssword cn e from one to seven lphnumeric chrcters in ny comintion. For detils out how to set the pssword, see the Help to the right of the screen in BIOS setup utility. Note: To enter BIOS setup utility, press F2 when the Lenovo logo ppers on the screen while the computer is strting up. 24

29 Chpter 2. Lerning the sics Enling NVIDIA Optimus (on select models) Optimus is GPU switching mechnism which utomticlly switches the ctive GPU to perform imge-rendering tsks. If no grphics-intensive progrms re running, the integrted GPU will e selected s the ctive GPU to preserve ttery life; if you strt high-definition movie plyck or 3D gme, the imge-rendering tsk is utomticlly switched y Optimus to the discrete GPU to produce high grphics performnce. Check the GPU indictor: if the indictor is off, slide nd relese the GPU switch to enle Optimus. When Optimus is enled, switching etween integrted nd discrete GPUs is performed utomticlly without user intervention. However, you cn customize settings through the NVIDIA control pnel to mke the desired GPU ctive to perform imge-rendering tsks for certin progrms. For detils, serch for Optimus in the help system of the NVIDIA control pnel. Notes: Optimus is not supported y ll operting systems. Currently, Optimus is supported y Windows 7. If you re using nother operting system, such s Windows XP, it my not e le possile to enle Optimus. Optimus is not supported y ll medi plyers nd video compression stndrds. If your computer is running grphics-intensive gme, it is recommended to connect the AC dpter to your computer. 25

30 Chpter 2. Lerning the sics Using NVIDIA 3D Vision technology (on select models) D Vision is technology devised y NVIDIA, which delivers n immersive 3D experience on your PC or worksttion. Any computer with uilt-in IR emitter cn communicte directly with the 3D Vision glsses. Using 3D Vision on your computer Enling 3D Vision To enle 3D Vision, do the following: 1 Open Enle 3D Vision in the pth of All Progrms NVIDIA Corportion 3D Vision Enle 3D Vision. Initil setup is required the first time you use the 3D Vision. 2 Press the ON utton to turn on the glsses. Press Ctrl + T to turn on the uilt-in IR emitter of the computer. Notes: The 3D Vision Photo Viewer shortcut will pper on the desktop when 3D Vision is enled. PowerDVD is recommended for 3D video plyck. For detils on settings nd further informtion on the 3D Vision glsses nd uilt-in IR emitter, refer to the supplied 3D VISION QUICK START GUIDE nd 3D VISION USER GUIDE. Connecting to the Internet As glol network, the Internet connects computers worldwide, providing services such s e-miling, informtion serching, electronic commerce, We rowsing nd entertinment. You cn connect the computer to the Internet in the following wys: Wired connection: use physicl wiring to connect. Wireless network technology: connect without wiring. Wired connection Wired connections re relile nd sfe wy to connect the computer to the Internet. Cle DSL Cle Internet services use cle modem connected to the residentil cle TV line. DSL is fmily of relted technologies tht ring high-speed network ccess to homes nd smll usinesses over ordinry telephone lines. Divided y the signl scles, wireless connection to the Internet cn e uilt sed on the following stndrds. Wi-Fi WiMAX Wi-Fi networks cover smll physicl re, like home, office, or smll group of uildings. An ccess point is necessry for the connection. WiMAX networks connect severl Wireless LAN systems to cover metropolitn re, providing high-speed rodnd ccess without the need for cles. Note: Your computer my not support ll wireless connection methods. Using Wi-Fi/WiMAX Enling wireless connection To enle wireless communictions, do the following: 1 Slide the integrted wireless device switch from to. 2 Press Fn + F5 to mke configurtion. OneKey Rescue system OneKey Rescue system Introduction The Lenovo OneKey Rescue system is n esy-to-use ppliction tht cn e used to ck up the dt on your system prtition (C drive) for esy restore when required. You cn run Lenovo OneKey Recovery under the Windows operting system, nd the OneKey Rescue system without strting the Windows operting system. Attention: In order to utilize the fetures of the OneKey Rescue system, your hrd disk lredy includes hidden prtition y defult to store the system imge file nd OneKey Rescue system progrm files. This defult prtition is hidden for security resons nd is the reson the ville disk spce is less thn it clims. The exct ville hrd disk spce depends on the file size of the mirror imge file (sed on the size of operting system nd preinstlled softwre). The following section only descries prolems tht might negte the need to refer to the more comprehensive informtion in Chpter 2. Disply prolems When I turn on the computer, nothing ppers on the screen. When I turn on the computer, only white cursor ppers on lnk screen. My screen goes lnk while the computer is on. A Pssword prolem If the screen is lnk, mke sure tht: - The ttery is instlled correctly. - The AC dpter is connected to the computer nd the power cord is plugged into working electricl outlet. - The computer power is on. (Press the power utton gin for confirmtion.) - The memory is instlled correctly. If these items re properly set, nd the screen remins lnk, hve the computer serviced. Restore cked-up files to your Windows environment or the entire contents of your hrd disk to the originl fctory contents using OneKey Recovery. If you still see only the cursor on the screen, hve the computer serviced. Your screen sver or power mngement my e enled. Do one of the following to exit from the screen sver or to resume from sleep or hierntion mode: - Touch the touchpd. - Press ny key on the keyord. - Press the power utton. Press Fn + F2 to confirm whether the LCD screen hs een turned off. I forgot my pssword. If you forget your user pssword, you must tke your computer to Lenovo uthorized servicer or mrketing representtive to hve the pssword chnged. If you forget your HDD pssword, Lenovo uthorized servicer cnnot reset your pssword or recover dt from the hrd disk. 37 Chpter 5. Trouleshooting Sleep or hierntion prolems The criticl low-ttery error messge ppers, nd the computer immeditely turns off. The ttery power is getting low. Connect the AC dpter to the computer, or replce the ttery with fully chrged one. The computer enters sleep mode immeditely fter Power-on self-test (POST). Mke sure tht: - The ttery is chrged. - The operting temperture is within the cceptle rnge. See Chpter 2. Use nd cre Informtion of Lenovo Sfety nd Generl Informtion Guide. Note: If the ttery is chrged nd the temperture is within rnge, hve the computer serviced. The computer does not return from sleep mode nd the computer does not work. If the computer does not return from sleep mode, it my hve entered hierntion mode utomticlly ecuse the ttery is depleted. Check the power indictor. If your computer is in sleep mode, connect the AC dpter to the computer, then press ny key or the power utton. If your computer is in hierntion mode or power-off stte, connect the AC dpter to the computer, then press the power utton to resume opertion. Note: If the system still does not return from sleep mode, your system hs stopped responding, nd you cnnot turn off the computer; reset the computer. Unsved dt my e lost. To reset the computer, press nd hold the power utton for 4 seconds or more. If the computer is still not reset, remove the AC dpter nd the ttery. Computer screen prolems The screen is lnk. Do the following: - If you re using the AC dpter, or using the ttery, nd the ttery sttus indictor is on, press Fn + to mke the screen righter. - If the power indictor is in linking, press the power utton to resume from the sleep mode. - If the prolem persist, follow the solution in the following prolem The screen is unredle or distorted. -Press Fn + F2 to confirm whether the LCD screen hs een turned off. The screen is unredle or distorted. Incorrect chrcters pper on the screen. Sound prolems No sound cn e herd from the speker even when the volume is turned up. Mke sure tht: - The disply device driver is instlled correctly. - The screen resolution nd color qulity re correctly set. - The monitor type is correct. Did you instll the operting system or ppliction progrm correctly? If they re instlled nd configured correctly, hve the computer serviced. Mke sure tht: - The Mute function is off. - The hedphone jck is not used. - Spekers re selected s the plyck device. 33

The operting time for fully chrged ttery is short. Dischrge nd rechrge the ttery. For detils, see Hndling the ttery in Chpter 2. The computer does not operte with fully chrged ttery. The surge protector in the ttery might e ctive. Turn off the computer for one minute to reset the protector; then turn on the computer gin. The ttery does not chrge. For detils, see Hndling the ttery in Chpter 2. A hrd disk drive prolem The hrd disk drive does not work. In the Boot menu in BIOS setup utility, mke sure tht the hrd disk drive is included in the Boot Device Priority correctly. A strtup prolem The Microsoft Windows operting system does not strt. OneKey Rescue system prolems Use the OneKey Rescue system to help solve or identify your prolem. For detils out OneKey Rescue system, see Chpter 4. OneKey Rescue system on pge 29. Bckup cnnot e mde. You re not currently using Windows operting system. There is not enough spce to store the cked up dt. You will need to free more hrd disk spce on your system prtition (C drive). Fil to restore system prtition to fctory defult. The system prtition, such s the prtition size or the drive cpcity of C, hs een modified. 34

39 Chpter 5. Trouleshooting Other prolems Your computer does not respond. To turn off your computer, press nd hold the power utton for 4 seconds or more. If the computer still does not respond, remove the AC dpter nd the ttery. Your computer might lock when it enters sleep mode during communiction opertion. Disle the sleep timer when you re working on the network. The computer does not strt from device you wnt. The connected externl device does not work. See the Boot menu of the BIOS setup utility. Mke sure tht the Boot Device Priority in the BIOS setup utility is set so tht the computer strts from the device you wnt. Also mke sure tht the device from which the computer strts is enled. In the Boot menu in the BIOS setup utility, mke sure tht the device is included in the Boot Device Priority list. Press F12 when the Lenovo logo ppers on the screen while the computer is strting up to select the device you wnt the computer strts from. Do not connect or disconnect ny externl device cles other thn USB while the computer power is on; otherwise, you might dmge your computer. When using high power consumption externl devices such s n externl USB opticl disk drive, use externl device power dpter. Otherwise, the device my not e recognized, or system shut down my result. The connectors nd y of the hrd disk drive were not designed for frequent chnges, or drive swpping. The preinstlled softwre re not included on n optionl hrd disk drive. Hndling hrd disk drive Do not drop the drive or suject it to physicl shocks. Put the drive on mteril, such s soft cloth, tht sors the physicl shock. Do not pply pressure to the cover of the drive.
