Background The BFX Festival was designed to celebrate the creative and technical achievements of the visual effects, animation and games industry, inspire the next generation of talent in this exciting field and share the latest knowledge through a unique programme of screenings, presentations, workshops and master classes. The 2014 Festival will run from 22nd-28th September. The 2014 event will open with a 7-week residential competition for the UK s best visual effects and animation students and recent graduates; this will be followed by a 3-day academic conference and a 4-day festival of workshops, public screenings, master classes, careers hub and a children s animation workshop. BFX 2014 culminates with an awards dinner/ceremony for the competition winners. The festival aims to attract a mixture of professionals, students and members of the public and to capture the interest of visitors to Bournemouth during September. Our ambition is to make the BFX Festival the best of its kind in the UK and to become an internationally recognised event in the fields of Visual Effects and Animation. BFX Competition Sponsor ( 5,000 + VAT) As BFX Competition sponsor you will be acknowledged for nurturing raw creative talent, whilst showing your organisation s commitment to the future of VFX and Animation in the UK. The BFX competition aims to replicate a film studio working on a live project with participants working in groups of up to six to produce a highly polished short visual effects or animated sequence. Teams will select their own brief from eleven short screenplays based on passages from classic literature and will be mentored and monitored by industry practitioners throughout the competition. A panel of carefully selected industry judges will have the task of picking a winning team. The competition is free to enter and participants will receive accommodation and a stipend towards living expenses. BFX Competition The 2013 BFX Competition was sponsored by Creative Skillset and Next Limit Technologies. 23 teams of 125 individuals from universities across the UK entered and 10 teams were selected. The 54 contestants lived on campus for 6-weeks as they produced a 30-second VFX or animation sequence. The teams were given full access to the studios and equipment of BU and AUB and throughout the competition they were mentored by professionals from Soho s top studios. The final films were judged on a range of disciplines by a panel of academics and industry mentors and the winners were announced during an awards ceremony on the final night of the festival. 9
