USF Remte Desktp Gateway Fr Hme Cmputers and Laptps Running Windws XP The Remte Desktp Gateway (RDG) allws access t yur USF campus cmputer frm remte lcatins while adding an additinal layer f security t prevent unauthrized access. The requirements fr RDG are: RDG can nly be used t cnnect t yur campus cmputer if it is running Windws XP, Windws 7 r Windws 8. RDG cannt be used if yur campus cmputer is a Mac. Yu will be using Micrsft s Remte Desktp Cnnectin (RDC) sftware n the cmputer yu are cnnecting frm (yur hme cmputer, fr example). RDC is included in Windws XP, Windws 7 and Windws 8. Windws XP may require an upgrade. RDC is available fr Mac OS frm Micrsft s dwnlad site. Befre using the RDG, yu will need t btain the full name f yur campus cmputer, verify that it is in the USF Frest dmain, and verify that yur User Name has authrity t access yur cmputer via the RDG. RDG access frm Apple ios (iphne, ipad), Andrid OS, and Linux are nt supprted. Steps t Cmplete n Yur Campus Cmputer T get the full cmputer name and verify the dmain, n yur campus cmputer click the Start buttn, right-click Cmputer (r My Cmputer), then click Prperties. Fr XP, click the Cmputer Name tab. T use RDG, the full cmputer name must end with.frest.usf.edu (fr example: C001234.frest.usf.edu). T verify that yur lgn ID has access t use RDG it must be in either the Administratrs grup r the Remte Desktp Users grup n yur campus cmputer: Fr XP campus cmputers: Click the Start buttn Click Run and enter: LUSRMGR.MSC Fr Windws 7 campus cmputers: Click the Start buttn In the Search prgrams and files bx, enter: LUSRMGR.MSC Click Grups Duble click Administratrs, see if yu User Name is listed in the frmat: FOREST\username Click the Cancel buttn Duble click Remte Desktp Users, see if yur User Name is listed in the frmat: FOREST\username Click the Cancel buttn If yur User Name was nt listed in either f the grups, Administratrs r Remte Desktp Users, yu will need t cntact the USF Help Desk t have a technician assist with making the apprpriate settings. Setup Steps t Cmplete On Yur Hme Cmputer (r Laptp) Running Windws XP As Windws XP is an ld perating system (Micrsft will end supprt in April 2014), it des nt include sme f the newer technlgies fr RDG use but can be upgraded. Yu must have XP Service Pack 3 installed. If yur cmputer is running an lder versin f Remte Desktp Cnnectin sftware (prir t versin 7) yu will need t upgrade it. Yu can dwnlad it frm: http://www.micrsft.cm/en-us/dwnlad/details.aspx?id=20609 Yu may use mst Internet Web brwsers (Internet Explrer, Firefx, Chrme, etc.) t access the RDG Web page. The fllwing screen images are f Internet Explrer 8. If yu use anther Web brwser, the screens will lk different but similar t the fllwing images. Internet Explrer file dwnlad security settings must be crrectly set. Yu will nly need t d this nce: Click the Start buttn. In the Search prgrams and files bx, enter: inetcpl.cpl On the Internet Prperties windw, click the Security tab. On the Security tab, click the Custm Level buttn. Scrll dwn until yu see Dwnlads. Make sure the settings are as shwn belw and click the OK but If yu see the fllwing warning, click the Yes buttn: Click the OK buttn n the Internet Prperties windw. 2
Yu will need t run a Micrsft Fix it applicatin t turn n the Credential Security Supprt Prvider (CredSSP) fr Windws XP Service Pack 3. Yu will nly need t d this nce. The Fixit applicatin can be fund at: http://supprt.micrsft.cm/kb/951608 Click the Fix it buttn n the Web page (this must be dne while lgged n with an Administratr accunt) and then click the Run buttn: Fllw the prmpts t turn n CredSSP and then click the Clse buttn. Restart yur cmputer. Lgging Ont Yur Campus Cmputer Via the Remte Desktp Gateway (RDG) Each time yu want t access yur campus cmputer, pen the Remte Desktp Gateway Web page: http://usfweb.usf.edu/remte 3
Enter the full name f yur campus cmputer in the bx (where CmputerName is the name f yur campus cmputer) and click the Search buttn: When the cmputer name is fund, it will be shwn as belw with the IP Address. Click the Cnnect buttn: 4
When yu see the prmpt D yu want t pen r save this file, click the Open buttn: The first time yu cnnect t yur campus cmputer yu will get the fllwing message. Click the Dn t Ask me again fr cnnectins t this cmputer bx s that it is checked and click the Cnnect buttn: 5
Enter yur lgn credentials fr yur campus cmputer: Fr the Enter yur credentials windw, type yur USF User Name in the frmat: frest\username Enter yur passwrd fr yur campus cmputer. Nte: The User Name must be in the Administratrs grup and/r the Remte Desktp Users grup n yur campus cmputer. Click the I understand and agree t the terms f this plicy bx s that it is checked and then click OK: 6
