OSU Freshman Engineering Remote Access As an engineering student at OSU you will find it very convenient to have the ability to remotely connect to the OSU network. Unless you are on campus and directly connected to the OSU network the only way you can access your network resources (files, programs, applications, etc.) will be by using the remote connection capabilities. VPN Connection It is highly recommended to immediately setup your remote connection capability to the OSU network. Remote connection is a two-step process. First you have to establish a VPN connection with the OSU network. Then you can use one of two methods described below to actually access the OSU resources. To establish this initial VPN connection, follow the instructions below headed Installing the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client. Once this is successfully installed you can set up one or both ways to use the VPN connection to access OSU network resources. Remote Connection Methods There are two ways to connect to the OSU network after establishing a VPN connection as described above. One involves using the standard Remote Desktop Connection utilities available from operating system vendors. For Windows systems this is located under All Programs > Accessories. For Apple systems this utility is available for download. The other way to connect is using Citrix Remote Access to Desktops and Applications. This allows for the same capabilities as Remote Desktop Connection but also will support CAD software access. Instructions for setting up and using both of these methods follow.

Installing the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client Installing the Cisco VPN Client is the first step to connect remotely to the Freshman Engineering resources. The program may be downloaded through OSU s Site Licensed Software page at http://osusls.osu.edu. The Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client is available for Windows, Macintosh, or Unix. Windows installation instructions: Select the Cisco VPN Client, download and choose run, and then select run again if you get a security warning. Unzip the installation software to a location on your hard disk and then run it to install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client: When this is complete, go to Start/ Programs/Cisco/Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client to run the VPN client. Enter the VPN server (vpn.service.ohio-state.edu) in the select box: And press the Select button. Then select OSUnet (instead Enterprise-LAN) and enter your OSU name.n and password.

You must make sure the CiscoVPN Client is running EVERY TIME before you can connect to the Hitchcock Remote Access Computer resources. If you are not using the VPN Client, you will not be able to connect!! Using Citrix Remote Access Remote access to the Computer Facilities in Hitchcock Hall may be obtained using our Citrix virtual desktop and applications. This allows access to a virtual desktop, specific applications, printing, and file transfers. In order to connect, you must be either directly connected to OSU s network, or from off-campus using the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client. See above ( Installing the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client ) for more information. Connect to the Hitchcock remote resources web page at https://virtue.engr1.ohio-state.edu, and install the Citrix agent. Logon using your Freshman Engineering (ENGR1) credentials. You will be asked to install the Citrix agent locally on your box. It is recommended that when you install the Citrix agent you are enabled as an administrator on your computer. Check the I agree with... and then the green INSTALL button. When the dialog box appears asking if you want to run or save the file, select Run. Upon completion, you may get a message at the top of the browser window. Indicate that you want to run the add-on, and select Run on the following dialog box about the ActiveX control. It will take several minutes to complete the installation, during which you get little or no feedback about progress. Let the process continue until installation is complete. When the installation is complete, the web page will have a list of desktop resources you may use, such as:

Click on the virtual desktop you wish to connect with, and logon using your Freshman Engineering (ENGR1) credentials. Final Steps: When you connect to a desktop session, you may see an additional dialog box, the HDX File Access dialog box, which gives you the choice to allow your remote session to make the drives on your local computer 1) invisible to your remote session - No access 2) available read-only 3) available for both read and write access. If you allow access to your local computer s C: drive you will see a drive that refers to \\Client\C: on your virtual desktop session that represents the local computer C: drive. Troubleshooting using Internet Explorer 9, 8, 7, or 6: If you have trouble with starting desktops or applications (it wants to download launch.ica), make sure you: 1) Uncheck the Do not save encrypted files to disk" option in the Tools / Internet Options / Advanced 2) Add https://virtue.engr1.ohio-state.edu to the Trusted sites in Tools / Internet Options / Security / Sites 3) Clear the entire cache (temp files, etc.) in Tools / Internet Options If you have questions or difficulties with the Hitchcock remote computer resources, please see your instructor, or stop by the computer staff office in Hitchcock Hall 317, or email R1exec@osu.edu to obtain assistance.

Using Remote Desktop Connection for Remote Access Remote access to the Computer Facilities in Hitchcock Hall may be obtained using the Remote Desktop Connection program. In order to connect, you must be either directly connected to OSU s network, or from off-campus using the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client. See above ( Installing the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client ) for more information. Connect to the Hitchcock remote resources by starting Remote Desktop Connection program at Start / All Programs / Accessories. In the Computer: dialog box, type one of the addresses: 164.107.36.249 or 164.107.36.250 Logon using your Freshman Engineering (ENGR1) credentials. If you have questions or difficulties with the Hitchcock remote computer resources, please see your instructor, or stop by the computer staff office in Hitchcock Hall 317, or email R1exec@osu.edu to obtain assistance.
