1 Connection to USOE Terminal Server 3/30/2006 Installing the Client In order to install the Remote Desktop and the Remote Printing you will need to have administrator rights to your machine. If you don t have the rights you will need to have your network person install the software. Windows XP The Remote Desktop Connection software is pre-installed with Windows XP. To run it, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click Communications, and then click Remote Desktop Connection. Follow the procedures in Creating a Desktop Icon to connect to USOE Other Operating Systems If you have any of the following operating systems: Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows You can install the Client by going to: Follow the procedures in Creating a Desktop Icon to connect to USOE. Creating a Desktop Icon to connect to USOE Once you have the client software on your computer, you are ready to start a Remote Desktop session. Open Remote Desktop Connection. (Click Start, point to Programs or All Programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications, and then click Remote Desktop Connection.) Click on Options. In Computer box, type the address usoeapps.schools.utah.gov (See Below) In User Name and Password type the user name and pass word you were given to connect to the terminal server. This is NOT the same as your login into the program you are going to run on the terminal server. In Domain type in termidell. Then check Save my password.

2 Click on the Display Tab Set the Remote Desktop Size to 1024 *768. (If your computer screen resolution is set to 1024 * 768 then set the display to Full Screen.) o To determine your computer screen resolution, Right Click on a blank area on the desktop. Select Properties and click on the Settings Tab. Look at the Screen resolution) Set the Color to at least High Color (15 bit). You can change this to a higher value later if your connection speed is adequate.

3 Click on the Local Resources Tab. On the Keyboard drop down select On the local computer. On the Local Devices, check the Disk drives and Uncheck Printers Save your Preferences To save your settings to the desktop, click on the General Tab and click on the Save As button. Select the Desktop Icon on the left and name it something you will recognize. IE CACTUS.rdp or PATI.rdp and click the Save button. Close the window. The Icon will be on your desktop Note: To change your connection settings, (such as screen size, automatic logon information, and performance options), right click on the icon and select Edit. If all goes well, you will be able to connect to your applications login screen by double clicking on the Desktop Icon.

4 Changing your preferences Right click on the Desktop Icon and select Edit. Make your changes and be sure you do a Save as on the General Tab. Setting up Local Printing In order to print on your local printer from the terminal server a printer client must be installed. The printing client can be found at: Instructions for installing the printer is on the document Instructions for Installing Uniprint Client for Terminal Server Printing When the Terminal Server session starts you should see a printer Icon on the lower right corner, if you see this, the Uniprint client is installed correctly. When you print a document through Terminal Server it will go to your default printer automatically. Starting a Session Double click on the previously set up Desktop Icon. Depending on what your login ID and Password you were given and whether you choose to save your password, you should get to the application login screen. If you get a Remote Desktop Security Warning window, check the Don t prompt me again checkbox Log on using your application user ID and password. Note: You will now have to enter your application user ID as well as your password. This version does not store the user ID. Saving a File Many reports have the option to export a file as an Excel worksheet or to other formats. In terminal server, your file will be saved to a C:\USOE directory with the name you specify. Do not add an extension to the name, it will be added for you. If the directory isn t there it will be created. If you get errors in saving there, make sure you have rights to create a directory there and to save files there. To log off and end the session There is a possibility that if you log off incorrectly, the next person who connects to the terminal server may connect to the session you were in just as if they were you. It is important then to log off correctly. Do not use the on the window to close the program. In your application, ALWAYS close the program (In CACTUS and PATI use the Yellow Exit Icon ). The

5 connection should then terminate and the window should close. If it does not terminate the session, then use the window.
